BUDDHISM IS ABOUT BEING COMPASSIONATE, WHY WOULD WE WORSHIP A MURDERER? ( Đạo Phật là đạo từ bi, tại sao ta thờ kẻ giết người?)

It is true that taking refuge in the Three Jewels means you will never pay worship or bow down to Asuras, Heaven, Demons and physical things. The Buddha is a perfect being who achieved full enlightenment, while those realms of Heaven, Asuras, Demons are still in samsara so we should not take refuge in them. The Buddhist teachings’ roots are laid on compassion and wisdom which those beings from Heavens, Asuras, Demons, even things could never achieve; so we should never seek refuge in them. Sangha is the symbol of tranquility while heaven, asuras, demons are not tranquil at all so they are not proper objects to take refuge. Not taking refuge in them means we should not pay worship, even bow down to them. If we keep doing so, we are meant to reveal the lack of Buddhist teachings which is the only path to attain ultimate liberation. If one has faith in Buddhism but is lacking in right understanding will eventually lead to deadly spiritual mistakes.

Chánh tư duy

It is really strange that most of Vietnamese people tend to pay respect and worship to Asuras, Heaven, Demons and physical things which arose from China without considering their origins? It is even more unreasonable regarding traditional respect as we are Vietnamese. Such objects such as mother-goddess, the goddess of fortune, local guardian deity of soil have their own origins not transparent. There is only one historical figure which is Guan Gong (or Guan Yu). However, in comparison to other heroes such as Tran Binh Trong, Le Lai, Tran Cao Van considering the dauntless courage and consummate generalship, Guan Gong is far behind. Then what is the purpose of paying worship to him? In case the worship was based on those criteria, isn’t it much better to pay worship to Vietnamese historical figures?

About the history of Guan Gong, should we believe in the historical novel named “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” written by Luo GuanZhong? Just recently, Phong Nguyet who is an author of the weekly magazine “Marriage and Laws” revealed the true color of Guan Gong that is contradictory to what was written in the novel. The other characters of the novel such as Lu Bu (FengXian), Diao Chan, Liu Chan are the same. It turned out to be the fictitious purpose of Luo GuanZhong.

Considering historical perspective, Guan Gong was a mass murderer who killed countless soldiers, officers, generals from Wei (north of the Yangtze) and Wu (in the southeast) regimes in the battle. He overtook five city walls, slaughtered six generals of Cao Cao’s side. He made sneak attacks on the Wei regime while they were fended in Gui Yang. While fleeing, he declared that an honorable man would never walk on small roads but proudly walk an avenue. As a result of his individual pride, all the soldiers were massacred.

Guan Gong was a mass murderer who killed countless soldiers, officers, generals from Wei (north of the Yangtze) and Wu (in the southeast) regimes in the battle

Guan Yong devoted himself to all the battles from the north to the south not for greatness, but for his own target that his two sworn brothers would conquer the world. The nature of the Three kingdoms time is merely a pointless battle for the purpose of land and power struggles! The karma never lies, as he deprived many people’s lives, he was targeted for a murder. Buddhism is about being compassionate, why would we worship a murderer? If we pay worship to someone who is keen on murdering, we will accordingly be affected by his nature.

In Ba Ria city, there used to be a bar named B.B on Cach Mang Thang Tam street where this kind of worship could be seen easily at the entrance by a Guan Gong with a dragon head blade in his hand. It turned out that they paid worship to him in the hope that Guan Gong would maintain the security and limit the chaos. Four months later, there was one scrap of history that happened in that place resulting in one dead person and 10 other injured victims. Then is it persuasive to pay the worship to him?

A bar named B.B on Cach Mang Thang Tam street

There are people who proved themselves so hard to be knowledgeable by deviating that after being murdered painfully, Guan Gong became a spirit wandering to find his own head which was slashed. Then he took refuge vows under the teachings of Zen Master Tongan Guanzhi and kept practicing Dharma until becoming a saint?! Chinese tradition even added another “label” to him as an honored Dharma protector?! That is so wrong! Why? After 49 days, every spirit must be reincarnated into one of six realms in samsara. Considering the timeline, it is more than 1000 years from the Three kingdoms time started from the Eastern Jin Dynasty and Zen Master Tongan Guanzhi time was Tang Dynasty. Why was Guan Gong’s spirit able to wander around? Even we accepted that he was taken refuge by the help of Zen Master Tongan Guanzhi, it is contradictory to what the Buddha taught that among six realms in samsara (heaven, god, human, animal, ghosts and hell), only human being is able to practice Dharma and fulfil Buddhahood. At that time, Guan Gong’s spirit was just among one of two realms which are gods or demons, how could he keep practicing Dharma to attain holy fruition? Even the monks and nuns who are still alive keep practicing Dharma diligently all their lives and vowed to be reincarnated to be human beings so they are able to maintain their continuous lives as Buddhist practitioners until the enlightenment. That is still struggling for them, let alone the demons! So, Guan Gong is neither a saint nor a god, what is the purpose of paying worship to him? Another fact should be kept in mind that a Buddhist layman keeps five individual commandments, while monks and nuns keep 250 and 352 commandments which are the root causes for resulting Buddhahood in the future. Why should we pay worship to one object who had no commitment to Buddhist commandments? It is thus no different with an adult person bowing down or saluting a child who knows nothing. In this case, when we pay worship or bow down to Guan Gong, we indirectly create a cause to deprive his good fortune and make his life even harder. Therefore, being a Buddhist means one should have compassion in parallel with wisdom, we must not pay worship, bow down to such entities as the Buddha once taught in “The thirty seven ultimate blessings” sutra. In this sutra, the Buddha stated that “Paying worship to whom are worth to be worshipped and paying honorable respect to whom are worth being respected”. Formerly, while mentioning the existence of demons, Confucius also taught and recommended to his students that “敬鬼神而遠之” (to respect Gods and demons from a distance, they are not supposed to be close or accessible).

In regard to two spiritual aspects, both Buddhism and Confucianism gave teachings that not to pay worship to gods and demons. Then why do we pay worship to them and draw us close to them? The Buddha is a Dharma emperor, we are Buddhist which also means a Dharma prince. The role is ultimately noble as the Buddha once declared that “I am a fulfilled Buddha, you are Buddha-to-be”. Then imagine a Buddhist is paying worship to Guan Gong, does it have any difference with an honorable prince bowing down to a trivial guard? Such a sinful behavior! That is also a reason that leads to many deadly mistakes made by Buddhists who are lacking the right view. The Buddha taught that “Placing your faith in me without right understanding means defaming me”. Defamation to the Buddha will result in falling into hell.

“I am a fulfilled Buddha, you are Buddha-to-be”

Even a Buddhist layman should not keep paying such kind of worship in his household life, why should Buddhist monks and nuns in the pagodas or Buddhist temples do so? Are mother-goddess, the goddess of fortune, local guardian deity of soil worth paying worship? Definitely no, as Gyalse Tokme Zangpo, an incarnation of Bodhisattva once taught us that “Trapping within the samsara, the ordinary gods are incapable of helping us. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels, the true reliance”. Then why have Chinese people been paying worship to mother-goddess, the goddess of fortune, local guardian deity of soil? What is the negative origin? How to explain that it goes against the Buddhist right view. I will explain in the next article for those who want to figure out more.

Best regards.

  2. Mật Khả Phúc says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

Thank you so much for such enlightened article. I remembered when I was kid, most adults bowed down in front of Guan Gong and asked kids do the same. I really did not understand who he was because he is not in Vietnamese history. When I read about his story, I wondered why people worship him, an aggressive man can kill anyone who did not suit him, he killed thousands of people to benefit himself and his brothers. Why do people make him a symbol of protection? Will everyone be protected by him while we are not his brothers? How people want to be protected by a person who kill thousands of innocent people for his own sake? It’s so wrong but people keep worshipping him because most temples have his statue, because grandparents, parents or previous generations said so. The wrong view has injected to Vietnamese for decades because of bad influence from China and Vietnamese just blindly follow it. Thank you Guru so much for speaking it out and helping me understand more about the right view. Guan Gong is not worth to respect or praise even from an ordinary person. We are Buddhist, Dharma prince as Buddha declared “I am a fulfilled Buddha, you are Buddha -to-be” so we have no reason to worship Guan Gong or any Asuras, Heaven, Demons and physical things. I have realized such temple, pagoda with their statues are full with wrong view because they go against Buddha’s teaching. I’m so grateful to follow Guru footsteps, to learn from Guru so I don’t be fooled by such ignorance cultures. I happily praise for your merit, wisdom, Bodhicitta and generosity.

I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your for the sake of all sentient beings.

  13. Mật Chánh Tấn says:

    Dear holy Guru,
I have read this article. Thank you holy Guru for your clear explanation, which has pointed out why we should not bow our head or worship to Guan Gong and other Asuras, Heaven, Demons or physical things. As mentioned in this article, Guan Gong (Guan Yu) was just a mass murder, who killed countless soliders in order to fulfill his ow selfish target that his two sworn brothers would conquer the world. Also, there are no documents, which showed that Guan Gong took refuge in the Three Jewels of Buddhism. Thus, the saying that Guan Gong became a saint after becoming a spirit is really not true according to Buddha’s teaching because after 49 days, every spirit must be reincarnated into one of six realms and only human beings are able to practice Dharma, not a spirit. Thank you holy Guru for your clarification, which helps me to access the right view and understand more about Buddha’s teaching, not to fail into the mistake as Buddha has warned: “Placing your faith in me without right understanding means defaming me”.
    Dear holy Guru,
    We will implement your teaching.

I am highly delighted to read this article. At the same time I am in confusion which I request Guruji to remove my doubts and clarify. :
    1. Buddhism says love your friend
And foe with Equanimity ! Then Gaun Gong does he deserve condemnation from us and he is transformed from murderer to a saint attracted from and later on following Buddhism like the episode of Angulimala who is transformed to a monk by coming in contact with Buddha and he stayed with Buddha in his ashram after transformation !. Buddha respected him.!
In India, Emperor Ashoka after killing thousands of lives in Kalinga war, felt repentance for bloodshed, his transformed into a Buddhist and responsible for spread of Buddhism all over the world by construction of Buddha’s stupas and sending his son sanghamitra to Cylone to spread the messages of Buddha ! The king was a murderer before but after following Buddhism, he is even today respected all over the world ! Such being the history why not Gaun Gong be respected as per per the principle of Buddhism to see every one with equanimity !

      Dear Tantra Nirvadeva,
Guru taught me to write some words with you.
As Guru’s explanation in the article, Guan Gong was a murderer for the benefit of his group. He never practiced Buddhism, how could he get enlightened?
On the contrary, Agulimala was a practitioner, he met the wrong guru then he had wrong doing. After meeting the Buddha, he became the true Buddhist and he practiced dharma diligently, which helped him to get enlightened.
Emperor Ashoka killed thousands of lives in Kalinga war, but he felt repentance and he was transformed into a Buddhist and was responsible for spreading the Buddhism all over the world. The cause is practicing the path of liberation; the fruit is to get the enlightenment. The cause is wrong view, killing people but no repentance; the consequence certainly came to him.

    Dear holy Guru,
Thank you very much. It is said judge not a person until his last breath. I am under the impression we don’t loose any thing if we respect a friend or a foe. These prayer and worship are of less significance when compared to meditation which is one of the important factor in the path of Enlightenment. Prayer and worship are only meant for showing respect for virtuous qualities of a person or dirty. Now it is clarified Guruji. Thank you very much Guruji.

The issue of Guan Gong is a typical one where people pay devotion to the ones who could not help them with anything, let alone attain enlightenment, how wrong it is.
Moreover, thanks to Guru’s guidance, I understand that we as Dharma practitioners are followers of the path to liberation. The choice of a figure to worship or pay devotion is essentially important to our ultimate purpose. Understand this, I cannot feel grateful enough to Guru, for Guru always reminds and teaches us to equip right view and see everything as what it truly is, using our Dharma lense.

Through this article, I understood Buddhists need to follow the Buddha’s teachings, never pay worship or bow down to Asuras, Heaven, Demons and physical things. On the other hands, Buddhist is about being compassionate, why would we worship a murderer, Guan Gong?
