One of my online classes, I asked my student who had just taken the tests for the high school entrance exam.

–       T., have you passed the exam for the school specializing for gifted students?

–       I am not good enough to pass that exam. Although my English score was at 9.7, my Maths reached a very low point. Luckily, I still have a good chance to learn at Nguyen Du high school for the Gifted thanks to my B2 certificate. B2 level candidates should get a band score of 5-6.5 on the IELTS test. Thank you for guiding me to get a B2 certificate.

I am happy with his good news. In fact, there was not a course for B1, B2 certificates in the English center where I work. The highest certificate the students got at that time was Flyers. I requested my manager to run the advanced course for secondary school students. I got support from my manager and my student’s parents. The day when all students got B1, B2 certificates, the parents were so happy that they teared up and could hardly speak.

I simply want to help them become more confident, love English and to motivate them to study. I was also quite surprised because the B2 certificate can be considered a band score of 5-6.5 on the IELTS test. My student’s wish comes true. At the important moment, how precious it is to have a “lifebuoy”. But the lifebuoy cannot come with no efforts.

In the same way, while the storms of samsara are constantly coming to you, if you do not practice diligently, how can you overcome difficulties and especially in the situation of “hanging by a thread” and facing death? Many people love Buddhism, they wish to walk on the path to enlightenment. They desire to find the suitable methods to practice Dharma under the true Guru’s guidance. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have a good chance to follow a true Guru and practice Dharma daily. Therefore, despite longing to escape the existence of birth and death, they still sink into the ocean of samsara. They sit in meditation for hours although they cannot get free from their three poisons. When facing some hindrances, their mind is disturbed. Their heartfelt sharing has remained in the Buddhist communities, the Buddhist group, especially during the hard time of Covid 19.  When the impermanent may knock at anyone’s door, all want to have a lucky chance to get free from the torment of samsara. I often read these messages on the group as follows:

“How does a buddhist deal with sadness? With the feeling of loneliness, unwantedness, rejection? Saying “let it go” is not a helpful response. It is not a “beginner” response”

“I suffer from awful panic attacks and anxiety, I have also seen where people have mentioned Buddhism has changed that for them and made it better. I would love to learn more, learn how to get involved, tips, advice, anything”

“Im curious to hear your opinion and experiences with meditation. I try to practice meditation every day but I find it hard pushing myself to do it all the time. What are your experiences with motivating yourself to meditate often, and what helps you to do so?”

The more I learn and talk with other people, the more fortunate I feel when I and our Dharma brothers always “store” many lifebuoys from the Guru’s light and wisdom to help us easily overcome the storms or hardships in life, not only Vietnamese disciples but also foreign learners. Some days ago, Tantra Nirvadeva shared with me his thoughts:

Tantra Nirvadeva

“When I am here, why do you fear ?

When I am recovering from recent attack of covid 19. I daily utter in my mind imagining the photo of Guru, ” Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshvara, Guru sakshaat ParaBrahma, thasmai Shri Guruve Namaha ” Sometimes, I used to feel the presence of Guru, saying ” why do you fear, when I am here?”. So, I feel now, after almost recvery, though I was put on ventilatory support for oxygen for breathing difficulty ( it is said to be usually last stage all had lost hope including the treating Doctor ) I got rebirth by the grace of blessing of my Guruji.

Om Mani padme him.

Tantra Nirvadeva.”

Many Dharma friends have learnt that Tantra Nirvadeva is a doctor with many years of experience, has examined and treated more than 5,000 lamas and during this covid 19’s storm in India, he got covid 19 after saving many patients’ lives. At the moment of “hanging by a thread” when it is dangerous enough to see the shadow of death, it is his devotion towards Guru, his refuge in the spiritual teacher, the founder of Pure Mind Dharma that brings him back by the grace of Guru’s blessing.

Many Dharma friends have learnt that Tantra Nirvadeva is a doctor with many years of experience, has examined and treated more than 5,000 lamas and during this covid 19’s storm in India

Similarly, Tantra Upatissa had been involved in the violent wave of coronavirus disease in India, and during his treatment, he always visualized the image of Guru, practiced developing Bodhicitta through prayers and commented diligently. After a week, he recovered and returned to a normal life, in which he goes to work every day and comes back home after a hard working day.

Tantra Upatissa

Why do Tantra Nirvadeva, Tantra Upatissa and other Dharma friends when facing difficulties, in urgent situations, they all pray to the Patriarch of Pure Mind Dharma while they have met many teachers, have studied Dharma from different Gurus? Even Tantra Tanshami (from the USA) when encountering anything difficult, he always prays to Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh for help. Or Prof. Avinash Kurma Srivastava (Tantra Sutradaka), or Tantra Dharma Bodhisitta always wishes to be blessed by the Guru at important moments in life, although many of them have never met Guru in person. life. It is Guru’s Bodhicitta and the six marvelous practices made by Guru that are a safe shelter for them in their daily lives as well as on the journey of awakening. Therefore, the number of foreign students has been increasing to more than 170 countries, at all ages, from professors, doctorates, writers, poets, engineers, etc. to ordinary workers. All can find the true refuge in Tantra house.

It is Guru’s Bodhicitta and the six marvelous practices made by Guru that are a safe shelter for them in their daily lives as well as on the journey of awakening

From the cases of “learning something firsthand”, I appreciate the present opportunity to study from Guru, to practice the Six Marvelous Methods, and build up the foundation of enlightenment with pure perspective every day. When I unluckily see the shadow of death, I surely have a wonderful lifeline to get free from samsara. Obviously, at the critical moment, your friends and relatives, or fame and money never can help you. Only the Guru and the Buddha’s teachings can help practitioners touch true happiness and ultimate enlightenment. Therefore, Dilgo Khyentse recommended in his book “The Hundred Verses of Advice” as follows:

“If your mind is constantly preoccupied by your money and possessions, you are in reality only preparing the ground for rebirth as a spirit tortured by hunger and thirst. If your thoughts are obsessed with your family and loved ones, you are only strengthening the pangs of separation you will suffer when you die. But to have devotion constantly in your mind will endow you with lasting serenity and satisfaction. Remembering even the name of your spiritual teacher is enough to completely transform your perceptions. Visualizing the guru above the crown of your head, even for an instant, can dissipate the veils of illusion. Devotion is the ring that allows the hook of the teacher’s compassion to pull you out of the mire of samsara.

Enlightenment, inherent though it is in the mind, seems so difficult to unveil. But if you develop fervent devotion and fuse the guru’s enlightened nature with your ordinary mind, enlightenment can be realized. Truly, to meditate on the benevolent teacher is a spiritual practice more profound than any other”. (From “The Hundred Verses of Advice” by Dilgo Khyentse)

Dear holy Guru,

I thank you for compassionately teaching and using many skillful means for us to easily build up the foundation of enlightenment, helping us quickly overcome the sufferings of samsara and have the precious opportunity to reach enlightenment.

I sincerely pray for your health and long life for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May Pure Mind Dharma spread all over the world for the benefit of sentient beings.

May all sentient beings awaken in the state of enlightenment.

May the covid 19 pandemic be quickly eliminated.

Om mani padme hum.

I am delighted to know the information that, Tantra Nirvadeva and Tantra Upatissa, etc had overcoming the hardships in violent wave of coronavirus at India, the like as “Escape the danger by a hair’s breadth” that depended on the devotion towards Guru, by they have imagined the photo of Guru in their mind.

    Dear Holy Guru,

Thank-you for this article. Sometimes our samsara suffering can

be so great we feel hopeless. If we do not have not been

introduced to a Guru to guide us in our Dharma practice we will

have no where to turn. We will never know the happinees of

Budda nature. We will be stuck in samsara. If our Dharma

practice has been guided by a Guru, we will be able to summon

him when our suffering leaves us hanging by a thread.

May Guru live long happy life for the sake of all sentient

    May Covid 19 end soon

Thank you so much for this article. I really needed this.
I suffer from panic anxieties, and sometimes it is hard to know how to handle it. But It is easier now when I practice Pure mind yoga and Dharma.

    Om Mani Padme Hum

  13. Tantra Dharma Sunyata says:

    Dear Holy Guru,
I read with concentration the article titled ‘Escape the Danger by a Hair’s Breadth’ and I surmise as follows:
1.The paper is prefaced will talk about the diligence and hardwork of a student who scored 82%-B2 thus qualified for IELTS College admission test by a narrow escape under difficult circumstances ,thus making the parents happy.
2.Similarwise,when trying to get over the storms of Samsara,we need to engage effort and diligence particularly when we are always’hanging on a thread’ and facing death.
3.People may wish to practice Dharma but might not be lucky enough to meet a genuine Guru in consequence of which they continue to sink in the ocean of Samsara. They sit and meditate for hours yet they are unable to escape the three poisons. And if they take the attitude of ‘Let it go’ ,it would not be useful. The only way out would be to learn more about Buddhism in order to escape Samsara.
4.So,we who are disciples to our Guru are fortunate that we have a lifebuoy from our Guru’s Light and Wisdom. Thus both Vietnam and Foreign disciples of our Guru are enabled to overcome storms of hardship in Life.
5 We are reminded of Tantra Nirvadeva’s recent predicament in grave illnes wherein he constantly visualized our Guru and other Guru’s;felt at times the presence of our Guru asking him not to fear; finally recovered as a result of Grace and blessings from Guruji.
6.Noteworthily, Tantra Nirvadeva is a medical doctor with years of experience ,had treated successfully over 5000 Lamas during Covid 19.Yet, he contracted Covid himself such that his own life was hanging on a thread’.And indeed it was his devotion to Guru that rescued him from the pit and shadow of death. It was our Guru’s blessings.
7.In a similar way,Tantra Upatissa was delivered from a vicious attack of the Covid attack by visualizing our Guru,by prayers and by by reading and commenting diligy on the papers and letters of our Guru.
8.It is noteworthy that inspire of living in different parts of the world; inspite of probably having met other teachers/Guru’s, Disciples always fall back to our Guru in times of grave danger.Such has been the salutary experience of Guru Thinley Nguyen Thich from Tantra Tanshima from the US, Professor (Dr) Tantra Sutradata from India, Professor (Barrister) Chukwugozie Maduka-Tantra Dharma Sunyata from Nigeria; same for other Professors, Doctors,Poets, Writers, Engineers, Ordinary Workers etc. These all take Refuge in the Tantra House.
9.Thus,our Guru’s Bodhichitta and six marvellous practices constitute Refuge for all Disciples in daily life and in the realization and awakening processes.
10.It is not in vain that Dilgo Khyenta recommended in his book ‘The 100 Verses of Advice’ that we should not preoccupy our minds with wealth, possessions, power and Fame so as not to be reborn in thirst and hunger; not to preoccupy our minds with family ties so as not to Duffy unduely with the pains of separation when it is time to depart;rather we should continuously have Guru and Buddha Devotion in our mind so as y attain serenity and satisfaction.By visualizing the image of our spiritual teacher, our preceptions are transformed,by so doing we hook up with our Guru’s Compassion such that we are pulled out of Samsara; by visualizing the image of our Guru above the Crown of our Head, even for an instant, all veils of illusion are dissipated.
11.Enlightenment comes faster if we develop fervent devotion and fuss the Guru’s Enlightened nature will our ordinary mind,if we learn to meditate on the benevolent Master. In doing all these,we are engaged in cogent spiritual exercises as contained in the’The 100 Verses of Advice’ by Dilgo Khyestse.
My beloved Guru,in this lesson ,you have provided us with a very valuable Pearl.
May the Guru ever continue to enjoy good health coupled with Long Life for service to all sentient beings.
    Om Mani Padme Hum

    Dear holy Guru,
    I have read this article.
It is amazing to know that many Dharma brothers have overcome their struggles in this tough time, thanks to their devotion to Guru, to the journey to final spiritual liberation.
I think this is also a familiar experience that all Pure Mind Yoga’s disciples have encountered. No matter where we are, no matter what issue we are facing, no matter how severe it may seem; just a simple thought about Guru, about the sacred spiritual bond, and the devotion to Guru can make those difficulties become as if they never existed. I’ve come to know that from the moment we take refuge in the Three Jewels, and vow to follow Guru’s footsteps; it has become something that is far greater than this simple, short life of ours. Thank you for giving us the true meaning of our life.
I pray for the health and longevity of Guru for the sake of all sentient beings,
May all sentient beings attain happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Dear dear Holy Guru,
Before knowing that I could focus on your image I began doing this early in my learning. I don’t know what drew me to practice this but I felt it brought connection to you in doing so and a perfect example was during my heart surgery. Yes I also recited the Mani Mantra but first I focused on you. You were there with me while I recited. I could see you above my bed, not looking at me but watching over me and the staff preforming my surgery. Because I saw(felt) you there with me it was second nature to start talking about you and the lessons you ahve brought me which in turn brought me to reciting mani mantra. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and dedication to Buddhism to assist all of your learners and those who wish to be your learners the lessons of Buddha. May you be well for the sake of all sentient beings. Each seed you plant with us has the ability to cover the world. Om Mani Padmen Hum
