Lesson 1: The meaning of the Buddhist flag. (Ý nghĩa của lá cờ Phật giáo)

Chanhtuduy.com: Assistant Prof. Vikas Singh – Tantra Dharmabodhisitta is an  Assistant Professor and Head in Department of Sanskrit, ; and M.A. (2010) in Sanskrit Language, M.Phil (2012) in Theravada Buddhism and PhD (2017) in Mahayana Buddhist Philosophy from India. Tantra Dharmabodhisitta

Respected H. H. Guru,

First of all I want to bow my head in front of your knowledge and wisdom. Kindly, accept my best wishes to the international Buddhist Flag Day (8th January).

The horizontal stripes of this flag are the symbol of the global people living in harmony; the vertical stripes represent eternal world peace, the colours symbolise the perfection of Buddhahood and the Dharma and the combination colour symbolises the universality of the truth of the Buddha’s teaching. There are five colours in this flag, which are:

1. The Blue light that radiated from the Buddha’s hair symbolises the spirit of Universal Compassion for all beings.

2. The Yellow light that radiated from the Buddha’s epidermis symbolises the Middle way, which avoids all extremes and brings balance and liberation.

3. The Red light that radiated from the Buddha’s flesh symbolises the blessings that the practice of the Buddha’s Teaching brings.

4. The White light that radiated from the Buddha’s bones and teeth symbolises the purity of the Buddha’s Teaching and the liberation it brings.

5. The Orange light that radiated from the Buddha’s palms, heels and lips symbolise the unshakable Wisdom of the Buddha’s Teaching.

Let’s celebrate the international Buddhist flag day (8th January), tell your children about their history. Congratulations to all of you on the occasion of the international Buddhist flag day (8th January).

परम पूज्य गुरु,

आपके ज्ञान और प्रज्ञा के सम्मुख मैं नतमस्तक होता हूँ।  अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय बौद्ध ध्वज दिवस (8 जनवरी) पर मेरी मंगलकामनायें स्वीकार करें।

इस ध्वज की क्षैतिज धारियां सद्भाव में रहने वाले वैश्विक लोगों का, खड़ी पट्टियां शाश्वत विश्व शांति का, रंग बुद्धत्व और धर्म की पूर्णता का तथा रंग संयोजन बुद्ध की शिक्षा के सत्य का प्रतीक हैं। इस ध्वज में पाँच रंग होते हैं, जो इस प्रकार हैं-

1. नीला (नील) –बुद्ध के बालों से भरी नीली रोशनी जो सभी प्राणियों के लिए सार्वभौमिक करूणा की भावना का प्रतीक है।

2. पीला (पीत) – बुद्ध के बह्यत्वचा से तेज़ जो कि बुद्ध के बाह्यत्वचा का प्रतीक होता है वह सबसे दूर से बचता है और संतुलन और मुक्ति लाता है।

3. लाल (लोहित) – बुद्ध के मांस से भरी यह लाल रोशनी का प्रतीक है जो बुद्ध की शिक्षा का अभ्यास करता है।

4. श्वेत (ओदात) – बुद्ध की हड्डियाँ और दाँतों से भरी सफेद रोशनी का प्रतीक बुद्ध की शिक्षा और मुक़्ति का प्रतीक होता है।

5. मंजीठ (मंजेट्ठ) – बुद्ध के वृक्षों, हील्स और होंठों की अविचल रोशनी जो बुद्ध की शिक्षा के अविचल ज्ञान का प्रतीक है।

आओ अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय बौद्ध ध्वज दिवस (8 जनवरी) मनाएं, अपने नौनिहालों को उनका इतिहास बताएं। आप सभी को पुनश्च अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय बौद्ध ध्वज दिवस (8 जनवरी) की मंगलकामनायें।

    I bow down at the feet of Guru and pay my respect to Buddhist flag on the ocassion of celebration of international flag day of Buddhism. Now a days we rarely see Articles written by Guru in English and much disappointed and request more and more Articles in English for benefit of the disciples at large.

    Dear Holy Guru, Thank you for posting this article. I have this flag which I fly from my house. I have always considered it beautiful but never had full explanation of it. This article has been very informative. I shall share with others.

    Blue: universal compassion for all living beings,
    Yellow: balance and liberation,
    Red: blessings of the Buddha’s teaching,
    White: purity that the Buddha’s teachings bring,
    Orange: unshakable teachings of the Buddha’s teachings.

    Also many thanks to Dr. Vikas Singh for reminding us the Buddhist Flag Day and the meaning of colours present in Buddhist Flag.

    Hope we all remember these things and put our best efforts in preserving Dharma in all possible ways.

    May Guru live long to uphold Dharma.

    May all beings be free from suffering and get enlightened.

    May pandemic of covid 19 end soon.
