About the Realm of Demons: Lesson 6: IDENTIFYING AND PREVENTING DEMONIC POSSESSION (Nhận biết và đối trị)

In the article “Possessed by the demon “, Mat Thuy mentions the phenomenon of the demon that possessed a person from Song Nguyen central.  Some people are wondering how a person who recites the Buddha’s mantra can still be still possessed by demon,  that seems contrary the authentic nature of spiritual protection from the Buddha, Bodhisattva. This case is rare but cannot be excluded

There are several reasons :

  1. The person has a similar spiritual frequency to the demon.
  2. The person has been possessed by the demon in the past, and later began to practice Buddhism.
  3. The person is breaking Buddhist precepts at the time, allowing the demon  to possess them.
  4. The person, perhaps from fear, is  desiring support from demons.
  5. The person who recites the Buddhist mantra but has not yet concentrated their mind can be possessed by demons, especially when acting without mindfulness.

Thus the Guru teaches how to recite the mantra in 4 ways to achieve the best outcome.  He also teaches Bodhicitta’s Inspiration, 16 daily activities to create good spiritual fields that drive away evil fields.

There is still remains the question:   Though a person may be possessed by the demon for the reasons above, why is demonic possession also known in those who seriously practice in Bodhgaya? Where are the Dharmapàla,( The divine protectors of the dharma)?

Before answering, pause for a moment to remember the sutra:  It is said that Buddha was teaching in Trayastrimsàs.  The demon king, the dragon king, the Asura king, and their relatives came to listen.  I want to ask why the demon can come to the Heavens, when the sutra says  inhabitants of the lower realms cannot come the higher realms.   Consider the example of the Brahma ( The host of heaven)  being in the Caturmahàràja who couldn’t come for the joy in the Trayastrimsàs.  Why the exception for the demons and the dragon? The reason they all came together was the power of the Buddha.

The reason they all came together was the power of the Buddha.

Likewise, the demon who possessed  this person and entered the Song Nguyen central that followed the inspiration power of Thai Hoa. If she went alone , the demon would stay away her 10 “ do tần “or couldn’t  step in Song Nguyen centre. But why the person X had the behaviors like the possessed by the demons  in Song Nguyen central . Because she intend to step in the perron and the Dharmapàla kept on both side.

hungry ghosts

Bright light was unbearable to the demon, who made the person X go back the door. A friend of X said that in places where have lot of spiritual environment, person X would often step outside or leave. At Song Nguyen Tantra, the door was locked once everyone went inside.  Therefore person X could not leave at the demon’s command. This is the reason why the demon sabotage the person X. When the demon couldn’t live inside the body of X, it immediately departed the person. Consequently, upon waking  this person was no longer aggressive as they were before

In conclusion we can say that demons have 5 favorable conditions to possess a common person, including practitioners of Buddhism. The purpose of demons, says the sutra,  is to be the result of bad karma.   Demons usually cause trouble where there is an evil environment, such as superstitious or the pleasures and depravities of the world. However demons rarely harm human beings unless someone wants them close, to worship them.,  So are we to act and express our attitude toward these powerful spirit demons?

  1. Don’t talk about ghosts and monsters, especially lately at night. Confucius said not to speak about the monstrous, magic, rebellions, and demons that we might avoid the conditions for evil.  Today psychiatry theorizes the point of explanation for this phenomenon.
  2. Be certain not to worship the spirits in your home, for that is to invite demons into the house. Those who do not practice Buddhism must more strictly adhere to this, because they cannot protect themselves. Confucius is the initiator of Glosbe, who also taught: “Let us respect gods and ghosts but keep our distance” – for gods and ghost should be respected but must keep away. But in our country, many people bring them to worship. Naturally Buddhists never worship demons because they have worshiped us as the Buddha of three time, ( as confirmed in the Kshitigarbha scriptures)
  3. Note well that is very easy to invite a demon in, but very hard to make  them leave.  The minds of demons are always distracted , their characters be betrayed people  .  To be close to demons is to be an apostate, with terrible consequences.
  4. When suffering unhappiness or sickness, you must not entreat help from divination, amulets, or astrology – they are related to the demon.
  5. Be careful in your attitude toward the eight worldly winds.  Padmasambhava taught: “the human being in the future, the eight worldly winds are the cause of demons in each person, low and high alike.”
  6. We sympathize with the bad karma suffered by demon, especially hungry ghosts. Each day we should recite the mantra “Om mani pad me hum” to help them find happiness. Practice of the Aspiration Bodhicitta each day, through 16 daily activities, will be the seed of Dharma for 6 species ( Gods, Human, animals , Heaven , Devas, Demons ) to the future – including the demons. Reciting the mantra continually will bring forth good virtues. Thereby we will limit the affection of the most demolish types that is the eight worldly winds.

Pray that everyone may have right-mindfulness in acts and thinking, right-view in the mind, and right-thought in practices.

  2. Dear Holy Guru,

I am full of happiness over your lesson 6: identifying and preventing demonic possession. It is very useful for all of us, both your disciples and readers all over the world.

Your teaching helps us identify the cases of demonic possession. And I have known that both people with same spiritual frequency with demons and Buddhist practitioners with demonic mind are easy to get the demonic possession. The victims are under the control of a demon cannot control themselves.

In order to avoid from demonic possession, practituoners should continuously connect with the pure energy from Guru and Buddhas by practice right dharma with right view. Especially, Tantric practitioners should not rise any impure and negative thoughts and wrong conception about the Guru because their wrong thoughts will lead the way for the demon to control their actions of body, speech and mind.

In addition, I remember that “demons usually cause trouble where there is an evil environment, such as superstitious or the pleasures and depravities of the world. However demons rarely harm human beings unless someone wants them close, to worship them”. I also bear in mind to have the right view and right attitude towards demons. I remember to follow your guidance of 6 ways to prevent from demonic possession.
