Lesson 9: Attaching to dharma resulting from clinging to ego (Chấp pháp vì chấp ngã)

Right Buddhist teachings, wrong method of Dharma practice

Lesson 9: Attaching to dharma resulting from clinging to ego

Before referring to the essence of Renunciation, we study the teachings of the logician Dharmakirti:

1 / Know exactly all objects which require to be dismissed

2 / Know thoroughly many methods to abandon them

3 / Know exactly all objects which need practicing

4 / Know perfectly all methods to practice them

5 / Transmit knowledge to students with compassion

The first two sentences say clearly the nature of “renunciation” cures the practitioner’s greed and ignorance which are the enemy of Buddhist wisdom including detachment. I will make clarification about this.

The logician Dharmakirti (Luận sư Dharmakirti)

A Buddhist who has prominent greed wants all Buddhist teachings to become his spiritual assets. Just as a bowl of rice contains many kinds of  viands which are mixed together into one dish with no taste characterized by each rare food. Naturally, this bowl of rice cannot be delicious.

If we separate into each dish, and add spice into it then cook with the proper recipe, we will have the perfect meal. Surely, we can taste the true “rare viands”. This example is similar to the educational process in which the logician Dharmakirti has taught to any teachers who teach Dharma and students who has intensive roots of enlightenment.

There was the dharma friend asking me yesterday, as follows:

Dear Tantric Guru Thanh,

Lotus Flower Estrade in Song Nguyen Tantra House

if I recite the Surangama mantra, can I avoid from being possessed by the devil? Because I have heard that this mantra is famous for exorcizing an evil spirit. For the layman like me, which regulation do I have to comply with when I recite the Surangama mantra? Is it possible for me to both recite the Surangama mantra and chant Mani mantra for my assurance? Please give me some instructions. Thank you so much!

There are four issues in this question:

1 / Does chanting the Surangama mantra avoid from being possessed by the devil?

2 / I have heard that this mantra is famous for exorcizing an evil spirit!

3 / What is the ritual of chanting the Surangama mantra like?

4 / Can I chant the Surangama mantra and Mani mantra at the same time for my assurance?

Perhaps, [email protected]make such question because he has not yet read or did not read carefully eight articles relating to “right Dharma, wrong approach”. All his mentioned questions were answered clearly in such eight articles. However, to help readers broaden knowledge, I will make clarification on these issues again.

1 / The mantra always has the power to avoid from being possessed by the devil

2 / The Surangama mantra’s functions has been preached in Surangama sutra by Lord Buddha, you should read it but not being heard (from who, from which temples)

3 / The ritual chanting of Surangama mantra is not experienced by the writer who has only chanted Mani mantra for ages. You had better ask your master about this.

4 / Chanting  both 2 mantras for the assurance, please review the “Lesson 2: right Dharma, wrong approach” for your more understanding.

The outstanding problem is from the following sentence “is it possible for me to both recite Surangama mantra and chant Mani mantra for my assurance?”. Hence, you should recite all mantras in Buddhism for being much sure, why only Surangama mantra and Mani mantra?

The Surangama mantra (Thần chú Lăng nghiêm)

A Buddhist who has prominent ignorance does not read Buddhist teachings or had read sutra, had listened to Dharma talks, but he suspects with the negative feelings, wrong view resulting in wrong application. For instance, he has been heard and taught that taking refuge in the Three Jewels, he must not worship any gods, devas, evils and animals who are still bound within the cycle of samsara. He believes it, but because of trade or of greed or of the feeling about “doing what all people are doing”, the Buddhist force to incense, prostrate, offer coffee and garlic to  mammon every morning; he sometimes comes to Mieu Ba temple in Chau Doc for “loans and fortune”. Also, he comes to temple for incense or offerings with some small amount of money in order to ask for wealth and health.

The Mani mantra (Thần chú Mani)

Here, there goes apparently the hesitant psychology of detaching the minor factors and focusing on the key points. And the consequence was asserted by Laozi, the Taoist master: “Success from assertion, failure from hesitance”. Even, when a practitioner understands the right Buddhist teachings with proven advantages, he comes for dharma with the attitude of dharma greed (as much dharma as possible), he does not express the high appreciation on Dharma. He will get no result in this case because of breaking Tantric precepts.

This is the manner of Greed and Ignorance in unexpected scenario with the topic of “right Buddhist teaching, wrong method of Dharma practice”.

On the other hand, it should be stressed that the refuse to “detachment” in Dharma practice is a form of “severe attachment to Dharma”, seriously affecting on the destiny of the Buddhist’s spirit. Here are two stories from the Buddha’s time to prove the above thesis:

Story 1: After Buddha attained enlightenment, he decided to leave the bodhi tree for instructing. The first one he met was a Brahmin ascetic who saw Buddha’s extraordinary style came to respect and pay homage to Buddha then immediately intended to follow Buddha for Dharma. However, according to Brahmin tradition, he asked: “Venerable, I would like to know who is your master”. Lord Buddha said: “I do not have a teacher, I myself am my teacher”. Hearing like that, he left after presenting the reason: “if Venerable does not have a teacher, I cannot learn from you”. This guy had missed once in a lifetime chance to become Buddha’s first follower because of his attachment to Dharma.

This guy had missed once in a lifetime chance to become Buddha’s first follower because of his attachment to Dharma. (Vì chấp pháp như vậy nên vị này làm mất một cơ hội ngàn năm có một !)

Story 2: When Koṇḍañña and his colleagues were the dharma friends with Gautama (dharma name of Lord Buddha before his enlightenment), they looked down on Gautama because he got a bowl of goat milk from Sujata. After Siddhartha became the enlightened Gautama Buddha, he sought to find Koṇḍañña and his colleagues to share his teachings. For they attached to Dharma of “cultivating self-mortification” leading to become enlightened ones, Koṇḍañña and his companions were skeptical of Gautama Buddha after his abandonment of asceticism! But Lord Buddha came closely to them, they quickly changed their attitudes toward him, they respected and admired him instead.  So they became the first five disciples of Buddha because of their detaching.

Two stories said two different spiritual behaviors reflecting the intense thought of various practitioners. The Brahman ascetic was in admiration to Buddha in the first minute, but he got nothing because of his attachment to Dharma. Koṇḍañña and his colleagues clung to dharma but immediately detached resulting in that they had good chance to learn the perfect Dharma from Buddha which previously 96 external religions could not figure out.

In conclusion; renunciation plays a very important role for cultivators and a more important part in terms of dharma transmission (pedagogical methods) from the teacher. Success or failure depends on the determination on the basis of right view, and more importance of right thought. However, practitioners who practice right Dharma with right application need 2 other principal aspects including Bodhicitta and Wisdom of Emptiness. I will make explanation next lesson.

    Dear Mat Dieu Hang,

The sermon of our holy Guru is really valuable for Buddhist practitioners like us in term of Renunciation. The clinging to Dharma and ego, through the story of the Brahmin, is seen a major hindrance to any practitioner on way to enlightenment whereas Koṇḍañña and his colleagues can get freedom from rhe Samsara thanks to right detachment. The most simple request for renunciation that a Buddhist devotee, after taking refuge in The Three Treasures, is not to worship God, Devas, Devils and Animals. It seems not many people can obey the rule, regardless other precepts. That’s why every practitioners should bear in mind the teachings of the logician Dharmakirti:
1 / Know exactly all objects which require to be dismissed
2 / Know thoroughly many methods to abandon them
3 / Know exactly all objects which need practicing
4 / Know perfectly all methods to practice them
5 / Transmit knowledge to students with compassion

  10. Steve Rogers says:

    Dear Holy Guru

    I am Tantra Haramitra

i thank you for your teaching. I understand, now that I have read your words, that I must not remain attached to anything that can detract me from my practice and my learning. Holding onto worldly items and thoughts will stop my path to enlightenment.

I must also, though, learn not to attach myself to closely to my established Dharma as I must be open to new thoughts, presented by yourself Holy Guru, so I can practice in new ways for the benefit of others to reduce all sentient beings suffering. Attaching my self too closely to my established Dharma thoughts and practice will prevent myself growing in the tradition of our Guru and family.

please continue to guide me respected Holy Guru, and teach me in the right path.

May the holy Guru have good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha ‘s nature.

    Om mani padme hum

  11. Tantra Amishuta says:
Thank you Dear Holy Guru for your lesson today. I am happy to read this. I am still learning to not be attached to anything. This is difficult. We are taught in USA that happiness is based on what we have in our lives. The relationships, the possessions, the things we posses. I’m learning not to be attached and trying not to relate my possessions with who I am. What I do is who I am, it is not what I possess or the relationships I have. How do I relish my relationships and treat them good without feeling an attachment to them? I am married and am definitely attached to my relationships. I’m trying to learn not to feel attachment to my relationships. May you be blessed and well for the sake of all sentient beings. Oh, How do you love others without attachment or without ego? thank you
  12. Tantramikaya ( Jane) says:
dear holy guru. Thank you for your article and the translation. I understood this article as follows. We should practice the Dharma daily and not work or cling to our ego to worldly things. Attachments or greed bring the suffering. When we go the way to enlightenment, we can trust the words of our holy Guru. Our ego should not be fed but our mind should be fed with knowledge and our minds strengthened by meditations. Only when we accumulate our knowledge and practice our meditations with dedication will we escape the samsara. If we do good deeds, our karma will be good karma. Selfishness and greed lead to endless suffering. In your articles holy guru I find the answers I sought for a long time. I understood that I have to work on myself and your articles help me with it. If our heart is filled with love for all living beings and we are strengthened with compassion and wisdom then our way will be successful. Nothing in this world is permanent and so we should not cling to it. I have learned a lot and often made the mistake of sticking to worldly things and growing my ego. Today I know that was the reason for the suffering. Thank you very much for your wise article. May all be free from suffering and successful on the way to the enlightenment. May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the happiness of Buddha s nature  Om Mani Padme Hum

    Guru is my guide

    Buddha is my life

    Dharma is my way

    Sangha is my Spirit

Respected Guruji, I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

Guruji, in this lesson, stresses the importance of right Buddha’s teachings and wrong method of Dharma practices by narrating two beautiful stories related to Buddha’s personal life.!

“Renunciation,” ” Attachment” and ” detachment ” in respect of Buddhism should be carefully  judged  and practiced  with reference to any situations and circumstances  we are involved viewing from all angles , the pros and cons of such a situation with right view and right thought, lest we will be the loosers and sufferers, if we follow blindly those Buddhist principles  with out rationale.!

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Long live our beloved Guruji for upholding Dharma.
