Letter to Disciples No. 222: The Bodhi hammock

Dear disciples,

Along any highway stretching from the South to the North, there are hammock cafes, a form of coffee serving with a lot kind of hammocks. Driving on long miles can take a temporary rest and keep going. No one knows when hammock coffee was started, but it exists till this day and can last for next hundreds of years.

The hammock is actually a net to catch some object, not to lie as it is today. In the old days, people used the phrase “hammock hanging over sky and land”, it means it is difficult to escape. Later this term is symbolized as the “the immense sky-net” which means “it’s impossible to run away from the sunshine”.

According to the universe of the Buddha, the Great King has a net of “Imperial treasure” illuminating the whole splendor sky. According to the novel “Venerable fantastic scripture” of the Bodhisattva Nghiem Xuan Hong, Pham King lost a pearl from the network of Imperial treasure net, falling into the hands of wrong-view person, it made human realm fall into a miserable situation.

In the hard life of human realm, fishermen throw fishing nets every day to get some food. Gradually, the net is transformed into a hammock for the elderly or as a means to lull a newborn to sleep.

Amyly coffee shop

I and my wife have many times to fall back on the hammock during the journey, and the mesh itself broke buttons of back pocket until I found out a way to resolve. Sometimes lying there, I contemplated that travelling must be always tired, and it should stop to take rest when we feel tired. In hundreds of hammocks, there are good or bad one, there are some one made of this material or another material. And the place to hang hammocks is not as big, airy as the “let’s hang hammock in the Truong Son forest / two people are at far and near ends” (quoted in a poem composed by Pham Tien Duat poet); Sometimes they are roadside cafeterias, being covered by poor canvas and rarely in a clean space. Although the meaning of the hammock is a place to temporarily rest so that energy is recovered for next journey, but a good rest place, good hammock is able to help to drive safer on the highway.

a corner of Amyly cafe

Writing to this paragraph, I remember yesterday on my way to Binh Phuoc province, I was in a hammock in a roadside cafe, but then I got more tired. Since over there, hammocks were occupied, there was only one ragged hammock, the cloth straps out like a rug. Every time people at other side got up, this side also influenced, like a hammock tears, throwing me to red basalt-ground! Being seated less than 10 minutes, I and my wife paid for drinks and kept going, the fatigue still persisted. Disciples, how struggling a homeless-life is. No meal as we want, giving destiny of stomach to street vendors. Once upon a time people called it as romantic wanderers, now they call it as backpacking travellers who don’t care about meals.

Dear disciples,

Hammocks with canvas and roofs

The defects and shortcomings of the hammock cafe can not be overcome until this morning (04/08/2017) when I stepped into Amyly cafe in D road at Chanh Nghia residence, Thu Dau Mot city, Binh Duong province. Do not describe the whole scene, I zoom in on the hammock hanging place is nothing to complain! The hammock is made of good material, the place is clean as nice as at home, especially the hammock is covered by canvas, and there is larger canvas on top. The table is quite decent when drinks set up close enough to reach. Swaying in these hammocks in this space is a hundred times different from other hammock cafes.

Bazan cafe – where I wrote an article

I think myself is no different. The Buddha finished building the all-knowing building for us to rely and be able to take rest at non-rebirth life at Western Pure Land of Ultimate. On the journey even though I have directed the way, but sometimes the long-distance makes you tired, wanting to lie and not going anymore. I knew that and created the convenient hammocks “right view” canvas placed under wide roof of Dharma. You can lie there for resting without afraid of neither sunshine nor rain of life which made of eightfold-winds. Wondering you do not like unclear place or other places are stinky, I weave the hammock by “trust” material, hanging on the two ends of “right view”; building the roof “the right teaching, the right method” under the great cover of the Buddha’s scriptures; beside of the hammock there are always available essence water “chanhtuduy.com” to drink when thirsty; under that it is the clean floor without any “wrong view” trash.

a corner of Bazan cafe

Thanks to that, the road to the Liberation city, you can stop to take some rest on the Bodhi hammock that helps you quickly recover strength. I will make a lot of such spiritual “hammock” so that you will be able to steer steady on the thousand-mile road. I believe that the 6 Bodhi hammocks I made: Eight Dharma methods of taking refuge in the Three jewels, Uninterrupted offerings, Samayagdrsti-Prabha Samadhi, Lotus walking Dharani, Meditation on Bodhicitta, Five degrees of Yidam meditation and Dharani; they will be the ideal stopping places for you to continue journey to the immortal land. I know the traveler stops by the roadside, falling back on the hammock and then leaves without attention to this “transit station”. However, the café is still there, the hammock still silently lifted back many people in need! Not much people who reached destination can remember of the hammock, the café what thanks to you can recover energy to arrive at there?

At the end of this article, may all sentient beings can “Pass, pass, cross the other shore” to achieve happiness of Buddha nature!

Dear holy guru. Thankfully I read your wonderful article. I understand your article as follows. I myself am on a long journey at the moment. It is not just a journey of my body from A to B. it is moments where my mind enjoys the wonderful nature with fields on which the grain is mown past sheepfolds past houses where people live. Nobody knows beforehand what things are happening and what people we meet. People who teach us things People who travel for the first time and need help. It is definitely also a spiritual journey and I am mindful and grateful. An example that I encountered in my last train An elderly lady climbed into the train with a companion who was helping her carry her bag. He said good-bye and stood two minutes later excitedly in front of the old lady and cursed that he no longer came out of the train the doors were locked. So he was forced to travel 200 kilometers with us. I began to speak to the Lord, and I listened to him and said quite calmly. You know I understand you is very annoying. I told him to look at the wonderful landscape and enjoy this ride with us. He looked at me in amazement and he became calmer and told me that he had not traveled for 30 years and that he was surprised at how technically modern everything has become. In the next station he gave me his hand and thanked me for the nice conversation and he laughed. He said that thanks to my calming words, it was not as bad as he first thought. He said he now has a lot to talk about at home and he would laugh now. Let us take our travels gratefully and use this journey to strengthen our spirit and to make new experiences. To help if someone needs help. We strengthen our mind through meditation and through a good book, or by careful observation of our nature. The nature of Buddha is diverse and rich in experience. Your articles holy Guru and your wise knowledge are also part of my journey. I am grateful and full of love. May all beings walk the spiritual path on their voyages (wherever they go) on the way of the four noble truths as once Buddha. May all beings be blessed with the nature of Buddha, and may our Guru guide us on our spiritual journey and be blessed with best health  Om Mani Padme Hum

  8. Respected Guru,

I’ve read this article. If the sleeping bag is the most common thing to be used by the European, then the simple but flexible hammock is linked to the Vietnamese. The image of a hammock giving travelers with a comfort back support after a long weary trip or slightly swinging the baby into sleep on a summer day have imprinted on the mind of Vietnamese generations. Now we, those travelers who are walking on the path of liberation, have a chance to rest our back on the “hammocks” woven from the Bodhicitta and wisdom of the Guru. Those with names like Eight Dharmas of Refuge, Uninteruppted offering…. are spiritual gifts for the disciples from his over 25 years of researching, surveying, practicing and applying Dharma into daily life.  Without these Bodhi hammocks with parasols of Right View, Right Dharma and Right Method, it’s no way for us to reach the final destination. Resting our back on the hammock, swinging in the melodious Mani mantra, tasting each and every drop of Dharma nectar in the shade of Guru and Yidam, we’ve found no such “transient stations” as comfortable as chanhtuduy.com. Thank you for giving us these wonderful hammocks and building such “transient station” so that we can fuel up with energies of “merits” and “wisdom” to reach the City of Liberation. May I always be a grateful drinker cause without your source of water, I may die of thirst before getting my foot in that door of liberation. Thanks for giving us such precious Dharma teachings.

May Guru and your consosort live long for the sake of sentient beings

May your Dharma propagation trip be completed conveniently and overcome all hurdles.

May sentient beings are fulfilled with the blessings of the Three Jewels.

    Om Ah Hum

    Dear guru,

I thank you for sharing. I’m not sure I understood the message. I have been homeless and a traveling wanderer with my children several years ago so i can relate to not knowing where your next meal may come from, begging for food and any other amenities you may need.  I went many days of not eating, making sure my children’s bellies were full first.

  10. Dear holy Guru,
I have read this article. Thank you so much for your sharing. It is a nice story relating to a hammock. I am deeply touched by your care and compassion.
Even a small hammock during your journey, you have still kept in your mind and write a vivid and beautiful article. As I know, hammock is a means for a long-way traveller to take a short rest and get more strength to go ahead. On the path to liberation, your bodhichitta and compassion is the luxury, clear, firm and comfortable hammock for us to strengthen going ahead.
In a busy life, I has been immersed in five desiers and got stuck in suffering. Your bodhi hammocks help me enjoy the peaceful moment and be at ease on the path to enlightenment.
In addition, when my mind is distracted by the eight worldly winds, your bodhi hammocks have still been the safe refuges for me to live in. I feel lucky to be a member of your pure house.
I am sorry for my laziness for a long time and I have not read and commented on chanhtuduy.com. I will try my best to return the Path. Please pay attention to me, the Holy Guru.
May you and your consort live long for the sake of all beings.
May all beings free from suffering thanks to your bodhi hammocks.
