Letter to Disciples No. 247: THE FIRST TIME WE MET (Lần đầu gặp nhau)

Letter to Disciples No. 247: THE FIRST TIME WE MET (Lần đầu gặp nhau)
Letter to Disciples No. 247: THE FIRST TIME WE MET

Dear disciples!
Standing in front of me was a man of medium height in polite attire coming from Bihar, India. We silently stared at each other for a moment. Late until Mat Kha Phuc introduced me as the Guru of Song Nguyen Tantra House, did he join hands together and bow his head in greeting. I sent him a strained smile for sensing something haughty in this manner. It’s understandable as at that time, I wore normal outfit of red color, my head unshaven and there were not any Buddha statues within the House’s precinct. I’ve ever sensed this kind of arrogance in first time meetings with “half-baked” bhiksus, professors, doctors, scholars or Buddhist laymen before.

First time conversation

It reminds me of a Buddhist lay woman who bragged about her 20 years of practicing Dharma in a pagoda. She goes chanting sutra in that pagoda every afternoon. She even told me in a more satisfied voice that a family offered her a 2 litter bottle of cooking oil and several packs of monosodium glutamate (seasoning) after she chanted at a funeral of their relative. With these two offerings, she thought her long time effort in cultivation had now born fruits?! What kind of fruits is it once she had broken her vow to the Trinity by worshipping God of Wealth, Guan Yu, God of Earth…? May she keep me stay long merely for boasting about her “achievements”? I wondered if her pride is narrowed just by chanting at rituals in return for offerings in kind? Why doesn’t she pay for such goods out of her own pocket instead of chanting herself hoarse and then coming home complaining with her children?

The first time we met

The point is that her payment for those goods may be known by no one while being offered by the family members in consideration for her chanting service that makes her of “high caste”. This sounds familiar with a story which goes that a Taoist hermit spent 20 years learning a magic to walk on the water to cross the river while in reality, he needed pay only three pence to cross the river by boat! Or instead of spending up to 30 years to train for “Divine ears” (dibba-sota), he just needs buy a mobile phone! Likewise, for compassion cultivation, many bhikshus have rushed to raise disadvantaged children instead of cultivating  Four Immeasurables (Brahma- Vihara) or contemplating love and compassion towards the sentient beings. Ironically, a newspaper posted their activity on its cover image with a bold print praising them as “true practitioner”?

Sincere thoughts of Avinash about Chanhtuduy.com

Similarly, some venerables wished to learn the mantra from me. Looking at their fervent practice of Dharma in Lien Hoa Dai after being guided to form mudra and way to recite mantra, I could not help but admiring their “spirit of Dharma learning”. But strangely enough, at the conference next day, they were the only one who kept silent among the audiences who were genuinely reciting the quintessential sounds of Mani mantra. This action surprised me as just one or two days ago, they burst with joy after being presented with a necklace attached with the symbol of Mani mantra. Another bhiksu also came to learn Dharma in Song Nguyen Tantra House but he whispered in my ear:” Please do not tell anyone that I’ve learnt Dharma from you!” What does that mean? Isn’t it a kind of stealing Dharma? Isn’t he taking unfair advantage of my kindness? He needs not come if it makes him feel ashamed! Suddenly, a famous quote comes to my mind as it says:” Doing a bad deed without letting anyone know is called super evil!” This shows the sign of a hypocrite that our Guru Rinpoche    uncovered:” …the defrauder owns much hypocrisy that is hard to be recognized” (Guru Rinpoche’s Teachings on the Natural Perfect Sutra, p.217).
Dear disciples!

Mat Dieu Hang is translating Avinash’s sharing

Above experiences are what I’ve gone through. I invited the professor into the living room. I felt commiseration for him witnessing his difficulty in moving. A man aged over 60 (he got Ph.D decree and professorship in his 45), overcoming obstacles from his university’s administrative mechanism, finance and health (spending 14 hours flying to Vietnam) to be here today. I understand and feel proud to welcome such a distinguished guest to our conference!

After taking a seat, the first question he asked me was:” Does Pure Mind Yoga originate from Buddhism? What is their characteristic? Which schools is Song Nguyen Tantra House following?…” I kept silent but opened Chanhtuduy.com to show him the article titled “What is Tibetan Yoga?” As he was reading the article, I called Mat Dieu Hang to Lac Canh Dai and heavily blamed her for an administrative fault. Hearing that, Avinash showed surprise and asked Mat Kha Phuc:” Why does Guru get angry and say in loud voice?” He may think that a true Guru is the one who speaks gently and is patient..” Then I strictly explained to him:” There are two types of teaching in Tantrayana, including kind and wrathful expressions. Moreover, the anger arisen from Dharma purpose is totally different from that from mediocre purpose! Will parents punish their child if he/she makes mistakes? What is wrong if the Guru points out the disciple’s mistake? What is wrong if the Sangha disciplines a bhiksu who breaks his vows?” The professor admitted that sometimes he berated his students because he wanted them to do well. I pointed at Hum cat who was sitting meekly on my lap, explaining that the cat uses his mild appearance as a means of catching mouse. Would the mouse find that cat meek and gentle before being bitten to death? It’s their purpose that matters. Hence, Lama Tsongkhapa taught that:” If that distress can make the being turn their back on bad deeds, the practitioner should keep this way in every means to bring them utmost benefit.”

By seven Buddhist standpoints, I pointed out that what he had researched is just for “being erudite in precepts. Yet if he is ignorant of spiritual experiences, he is like a rich man who has lost the key of his treasury” (Gampopa). Moreover, anger is totally different from resentment (or hatred, one of three poisons). Hot-tempered or good-tempered is a psychological construct and behavior while “vajra criticism” in Pure Mind Yoga in Song Nguyen Tantra House is related to the opening and enlightening of mind. A person can make the same mistake as a Brahmin in the Parable of Poisoned Arrow (Majjhima Sutra) as he questions things that lie outside the purpose of enlightenment. In this parable, the Buddha taught the Brahmin a lesson since this man asked him cosmological questions that had nothing related to enlightenment.

Dear disciples!
Slowly the lines of strain in his face eased which seemed to be an agreement with my position. Now I know why the professor though having delivered lectures in many universities, including the Buddhist one, has yet any method of practice. Late until his approach to chanhtuduy.com, have that queries been answered. However, his self-willed habit and improper thought had driven him to put such “questions” on me until I had to give him “vajra criticism”.

Avinash joined hands and bowed to me saying goodbye

Since then, Prof. Dr. Avinash Kumar Srivatsvara has changed his mind and attitude towards me based on his respectful words to the Guru and sincere thoughts about chanhtuduy.com at the conference. From that moment on, he always acted in a serious manner. He did not talk in a loud voice whenever sitting in front of me; did not stand next to me except my permission; joining his palms in front of his chest whenever listening to my expounding on Dharma…

I gave Avinash a send-off

On returning day, I gave Avinash a send-off. He joined hands and bowed to me saying goodbye, seeming somewhat loath to part with the Guru and fellow brothers. He carefully kept my gifts, especially the necklace with the symbol of Mani mantra. He promised to regularly rehearse two methods of Dharma practice I’ve taught him and looking forward to being officially transmitted by the Guru on the day back to Song Nguyen Tantra House. From now on, I’ve got another disciple with Dharma name of Tantra Sutradaka (Avinash Kumar Srivatsara)!

Looking back on this experience, I felt sorry for “half-baked” Buddhist followers who have less practice but often boast themselves a genius. Their mind is roused as a cat seeing a mouse whenever they have chance to grasp fame and benefits. The behavior and attitude of Avinash Kumar Srivatsara is obviously much better than those “half-baked” bhiksus “who perform meritorious actions in order to merely attain fame and praise. This is like bartering the wish-fulfilling jewel for a pellet of goat’s dung” – a warning from Master Gampopa.
Dear Tantra Sutradaka (Avinash Kumar Srivatsara)!

Avinash carefully kept my gifts

I am so proud to have a disciple like you. With a degree of Ph.D and professorship, you have travelled through many countries, delivering lectures and speeches in many conferences and guiding lots of postgraduates on their theses. I cannot compared to you in the field of academic education. It really is a unique Guru-disciple relationship which has been well cultivated through many kalpas. How wonderful the Dharma is! Together we offer our appreciation to the Buddhas in ten directions for the miraculous causation principle that performs beyond any thoughts of normal people, even the heretics. Now I would pray:

“O’ Guru Rinpoche, please turn my mind towards the Dharma
O’ Perfect Enlightened Ones, don’t let me stray onto wrong or inferior path
O’ compassionate Guru, who is one of these masters, please pay heed to me!”
A rainy afternoon on the peak of Phu Van Mountain

Respected Guruji I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.
    I am Tantra Nirvadeva.
This article is a good example for how Chanhtuduy.com and Song Nguyen Tantra House is meant for its 3- Step policy of Reform- transform- perform ( right Dharma practices) in Buddhism. It is transforming lay Buddhists to lead in to the path of right Dharma practices !
Whatever the university degrees or the status of high honour or position one may possess or occupy, they are still lay Buddhists if they do not perform right Dharma practices as taught by Guru. !

It is really a wonder how Guruji transformed the Indian professor guest kalyanamithra , a participant in the present international conference on Buddhism, though Guruji was upset by his question put forth by the professor in the beginning of the conference and made him understand the right Dharma practices.!
Inspite of this gesture, the cardial treatment given and hospitality shown by Guruji is highly commended.! The gifts and necklace containing Mani manthra received by the kalyanamithra Avinash Kumar Srivastava r is a great honour done to him by Guruji.!
In Hindu religion there is a saying about Guru:
    ” Shiva(God) rushte, Guru sthratha,
Guru rushte koyi Nahi sthratha .”(Sanskrit) meaning ” If Shiva (God) becomes angry, Guru will protect. If Guru becomes angry no body will protect. !”so Guru Is Supreme.!
This applies more or less in all Religions.Similarly in Buddhism Guru Is equal to Buddha himself or even more than that !
In the beginning , Guru criticizes about hypocrisy how some Buddhists putting on the mask of holy robes and shaven heads with mala in their hands , chanting Mantras cheat public , curruptive and construct Pagodas for name and fame ! No wonder black sheeps will be there in all walks of fields ! Buddhists are all not free from this stigma !
The beautiful photos displayed in this article will themselves talk of the grandeur success of the present conference.!
In the end, I repeat Guruji’s Prayer ” O, Guru Rinpoochi please turn my mind towards the Dharma” !
    Om Mani Padme Hum.
Long live our beloved Guruji for upholding Dharma.

    Respected Guruji,

My regards  to you as well as all disciples. I have gone through the letter No 247 ” First time Mate”.  Excellent  article with nice examples of misinterpretation. I have no right to say anything against any disciples…..education, experience, dress and length of service has no value if we do not follow the right path….Guruji has shown the right path to the disciple who attend the Dharma Conformance far from Vietnam.  Ego and Me both are dangerous for us…. “Me” is the Ego. We means a team work…may be alone….( exactly not alone…he/she and his/her soul). Always feel good, Think Good and Do Good for the common man who has no way to do anything for them alone. Dharma and Disciples both are inter connected to show the bright side of life. Guruji has taken his level Best to show the right path.

My sincere  request and Regards to Guruji  to delver good speech / letter for us. I am a lay man but influenced with your letter.

Dear Guru thanks for sharing this article.

    It’s a interesting one.

It’s really good to see people transforming their attitude and thoughts with Guru’s blessings.

Hope all people practice from heart and mind with teaching of Guru, not just for fame and reputation or with holding blind love towards practice of Dharma.

May Guru live long and protected and get enlightened.

May all beings and Guru’s consort be protected and get enlightened.

    Om Mani Pdme Hum

It is a pleasent surprise that Guru had been kind enough to make me the central character of his enlighting article. I am at fix how to extend my complements for his shawering forth the ambrosia of benidiction on me. When I arrived at Tantra House, at the first sight I could not decide how to react as I was not in know of any person by their face including Rose Tran. I was searching her prospect in every female face. Though I had reverence for Guru but his graceulf appearsnce put me in the state of thoughtless ness and I could simply bowed my head before him as a naive or ignorent, without having any pride and prejudice. But his polite and compassionate attitude embolden me to initiate the talk. He asked me to raise some question, but I did not have any as they all evoperated sitting by him. I was wonder stacked to observe the rapid change in me. I am thankful to my Guru for initiating the positive changes in me.

It was a great occasion for me to meet the Dhamma friends in the forigen land and establish the feeling of one ness with them. All the strange faces were becoming familiar and friendly. I found in them the feeling of frendliness and in guru the compassion for every one including the animals (The cats who became friendly to me to).  I am thankful to my friend who arranged this great event for me .

It was again nice for me to speak something, though very trivial, from the stage. Slowly but stealthly I was becoming friendly to all the deligates of the conference. Today they all have become the member of my small global village.  This is all becaues of the the guru. I am grateful to him for causing a change in my life.

    Dear Guru,

I have read this article already. Thanks to your story, I find out that a true spiritual master has different ways to treat his disciples including gentle attitude and angry one. In any manner, the Guru’s ultimate purpose is to warn his disciples off their latent mistakes. As a result, they tend to remember and avoid repeating mistakes in future. I think Tantra Sutradaka understand your compassion even you give heavily words to Mat Dieu Hang.

After all, I believe that Tantra Sutradaka and other foreign practitioners of Song Nguyen Tantra House have had great experience traveling to Guru’s pure land. I also hope that they will follow the Guru’s footsteps in practising bodhicitta by flourishing articles on chanhtuduy.com to fortunate people.

May you and your consort live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Tantra Sutradaka good health and be blessed by the Three Jewels.

  8. Respected Guru,

I am happy reading your letter. Through the examples provided in the article, I have seen different behaviors of the people who seek Dharma teaching from a Guru. Professor Avinash Kumar, from a person who still has many prejudices (a Guru has to speak gently and patient…), who still does not understand the Methodology he claimed to be interested in and still feel obligated renouncing his own arrogance…has realized his mistakes and made corrections by showing respect to the Guru in a very short amount  of time.

On the other hand, there are examples of the two bhikkhus, who acted happy when receiving the mantra, but remain in an unappreciative silence in front of the public while others were chanting. Comparing these two behaviors, the Guru has stated: “The behavior and attitude of Avinash Kumar Srivatsara is obviously much better than those ‘half-baked’ bhikkhus ‘who perform meritorious actions in order to merely attain fame and praise. This is like bartering the wish-fulfilling jewel for a pellet of goat’s dung'”

Reading this letter, I admire and look up to the Guru’s integrity, who did not hesitate to say the words of punishments in order to teach his disciple in front of the guesses because it is the right thing to do, even though it has caused Dr. Avinash Kumar’s misunderstanding.

    Dear Respected Guru,

Thank you for writing this letter to us. I’m happy with the knowledge gaining from reading this article. I had understood the necessary attitude and behavior while seeking for the Dharma from a respected Guru.

I bow my head at the lotus feet of the Guru. May all sentient beings attain the true happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Dear guru

Very much thankful for this article. I bow my head on your lotus feet.

In India there is given very high rank to guru after our parents because he gives us their eyes to see the world with new perspective.so we all have to fully trust on our guru who teaches dhamma.and it is definitely right view of respect.if one violets guru then he is indirectly not accepting Budha.

I personally say but it is true I was little bit confusion on guru due to not knowing and ignorant of reading articles. But as some time passed when I used to read article seriously, the only thought coming to mind is guru lotus feet.i just want to touch his feet. I personally feel and I know very well this may be feeling of all sensient being that guru is like a Budha at present time for us.if one want to know guru he should firstly have to egoless. I also got a slap from guru ( in words ) as I not read article properly and use to ask question.when I use to think that moment I feel very sorry.

I am very fortunate to have guru like you.may guru live long for the sake of all sensient being.
