Letter from India: Karma Purification for Mundane Happiness and Transcendental Liberation (Tịnh Hóa Nghiệp Chướng để Hạnh Phúc Thế Gian và Giải Thoát Tối Thượng)

Reverend Guruiee
Om Mani Padme Hum
I bow before your lotus feet
Due to my procrastinating tendency and the beast of burden of getting my retirement benefit paper complete has perplexed me so much that my 75% written comment on this article is either deleted or misplaced in my laptop. Knowing it well that this is of prime importance for me as its arrival to me has generated in me a sense of optimism and provided me an elixir to stand again to face the problem as a disciple of Pure Mind Buddhism. These days, as and when I face any problem I sit either in the vimalkirity’s room or ask my friend to send my holy Guru’s sharing. I am thankful to her for helping me very promptly. This is the reason my regret and remorse is greater than earlier. I went through this article several times when I started writing its comment in piecemeal. Now when it is lost will have to give a repeated reading of it again and again till the comment writing is not complete. Though in my memory the concept, theme and focal point of the article are preserved, but to construct a castle of comment appears to be difficult. However, on the basis of the synoptic view of the article, preserved in my mental hard disk, I started to ponder over the problem in hand. It gave a positive result too.

Dhammapada starts with the note on the role of mind in shaping our action and fruition as per the Karmic principle. It says Mind is the fountain head of all the good and bad action and its fruition in our life too. If one does the work with polluted and the wrongly prejudiced mind, pain and ennui will follow him as the footstep of an ox is followed by the rut of its bullock- cart. In the second verse it is further said that if on the contrary if one does the work with pious and positive mind, happiness follows one as his own shadow. In Samayutta Nikaya it is said Chittena niyate loko. Mind creates the world. Even your successful volition construes the work. If any sort of idea that emerges in the internal state of mind, it amounts to complete the work externally too. And accordingly one has to face its consequences in one’s own life sooner or later. That is why in our practical life we keep facing troubles, pain, ailment and so many types of sufferings including impediments against our volition. These days I am facing the last situation and this is the reason of my present worry. This article is the eye opener for all those who are facing the same dilemma. I found people saying I have not done a single evil in the entire span of my life, but why I am facing the painful and frustrating situation. They forget their mental waves of ill wills for others which also amounts the virtual completion of the work and they cannot escape its fruition. And an ignorant person like me has to face such suffering and unpleasant situation.
This article starts with an unpleasant note of our holy Guru’s, ailment caused by food poisoning, but ends with the optimistic tinge of clearing the mist of ignorance. It brings the fact of various vicarious sufferings that normally occurs in our life like nightmare, slander, frightening, money loss and many others. He is of the opinion that nature takes its own course. Hence, one should not be perturbed with the happenings even if it goes contrary to our wishes. Since, what we sow so we reap, the results are inevitable. One should take it sportingly. He further demonstrates 4 probable types of suffering that a human being faces in the life. Man is a psychosomatic being; his problems are mental as well as physical. Among the physical sufferings disease, hunger, accident are important. On mental it is the nightmares, slanderous speech against him and money loss is prominent. But for Vajrayana Buddhism these should not be taken as the punishment rather the possible ways of purification as they continuously lessening the the beast of burden of the previous or present Karmas which have ripened in course of time. As the fruition of our deeds or misdeeds performed earlier and these these appear in our life as nightmare we will be frighten in the dream only, no actual incident takes place. Reverend Guru says money loss in dreams does not give loss in actual loss the dreamer. But these reduce the accumulation of the Karmic results slowly and stealthy. In fact these are boon in disguise. Even when after taking much of care if financial loss is occurred through theft, loss in business one must tanks the Dhamma as it is lessor than the loss of life.

Guru advices his disciples two very important things; since mind is the fountain head of all the good and bad activities, it is imperative on our part to control it. Mind is the Pandora’s Box. If its lid is closed strictly no evil can ooze out and no evil result will be their fruition. The old Karmic fruition will exhaust, no new good or bad merit of the deeds will be accumulated. With the en d of these there will be happiness in the mundane life. The accumulated paste good karmas will carry on the body for the welfare of the sentient beings of this planate earth. It is the state of liberation in this life as our Guru is leading the life for his disciples. Now one will come to the state where one not affected of anything, whether it is pleasure or pain, praise or blame. Dhammapada has rightly said, “Just as the solid rock is not shaken by the wind, in the same way wise men are not affected by praise and blame.”
Secondly, this mental lid should be opened for let the pious, and positive thoughts spill of it of so that it may manifest into good deeds, beneficial to others and it’s altruistic effects may weaken the past wrongs and its fruition. Now our benevolent karmas may prune out the past karmic debts and make them milder. For this the practice of right mindfulness is a must for the mental purification. If we happen to divert ourselves to the path of purification comprising of mental stability, renunciation and take refuse in triple jewels it will open a vista for mundane happiness and transcendental liberation i.e. Nirvana.
