Letter from Sweden: FRIENDSHIP ON THE FLIGHT (Part 1) (Thư Thụy Điển: TÌNH BẠN TRÊN CHUYẾN BAY (Bài 1))

Feeling comfortable at business class seat

I got comfy on the seat (with automatic adjustment system), comparing the distinctive difference between business class and economy class in commercial aviation service.

– I’m sorry for disturbing you!

I spoke in broken English but he understood clearly. That is a big, nice looking man with raspy voice caused by aging.

– Oh no problem!

I sit by the window looking at floating white clouds

So we get acquainted while sitting next to each other. Strangely enough, before entering the boarding gate of the flight from Vietnam to France, the check-in staff suddenly changed my seat number from 1A to 1L which allowed me to sit by the window and so did the flight from France to Sweden. I didn’t think meeting Phill (his name) would become a “fairy tale” for me. Phill just came back from a trip from Cambodia. Previously, he has been to 15 countries, including Vietnam. This Scottish man is single and his pension is enough to travel around the world. Therefore the magnificent Paris or beautiful Stockholm is not something strange to him. He promised to ask his nephew who is following a tertiary course in Stockholm to be my city guide. I rejoiced silently for it is strangeness that I would tell you why that was.

Mr Phill and I on the flight

Thanks to the 4-hour delay, I had a chance to admire Paris from above which poses a miraculous look at night with dark sparkling yellow like in a mythic movie. This time, the business class ticket offered me top-notch services; even the hostesses and stewards were more friendly and helpful. The main reason, as I think, is that the more merit we gain, the more favourable conditions we have; the greater virtue we possess, the stronger power of getting respect from others we obtain…

Paris at night looked from above

-“What would you like for drink, sir?” The steward asked me in English with a French accent. I felt happy to see him pointing at my pendant, which is carved with the mantra “Om mani padme hum” and showed his admiration. I asked him: “Really?”. He replied: “Yes, sure!”. I burst out of laughing when listening to his answer. This made Phill surprised. Of course, he couldn’t understand why I laughed! Now you know why I am wearing a mantra carved pendant because any one who gives admiration or compliment to it will immediately be sown with the seed of Vajrayana in the future. Meanwhile, my followers and disciples who show similar attitude will reap merits for having shared elation with other’s good deeds (more merit will be gained if that person is their Guru)!

As the plane was slowly landed, I started to be worry because it’s not easy to navigate in this vast airport (Charles de Gaulle) which has a lot of terminals, entry and exit gates. Phill assured me that he would accompany me to the exit gate and to the departure terminal for the connecting flight to Sweden. I quickly found the departure terminal to Sweden thanks to Phill’s support. Before entering the security checkpoint, we had a long goodbye. I think I deserve Phill’s kindness because previously I asked him to keep an eye on my stuff while I used the restroom. What do you think? If I took my luggage into the restroom, this would be an impolite behaviour towards him. But if I put trust in wrong person, I would lose all: money, personal stuff and dharma documents. I would become a “homeless wanderer” in magnificent Paris! Well, one situation but there are different ways to handle it. I may not be as good at physiognomy as Yu Tai Lu in modern China or as Chen Xi Yi in medieval China but I believe in my intuition under the blessings of Avalokiteshvara.

I believed in my intuition under the blessings of Avalokiteshvara

It seems that thanks to “giving fullest trust” to the newly acquainted friend on the flight, I got the result beyond my expectations. I once got support from Helen during my previous trips to France and now Phill appears. This is an unconceivable wonder of Dharma. What will happen next? Please read the next part. I stop here.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

A rainy afternoon on the peak of Phu Van Mountain, January 11, 2020

    Dear Guru

    Thank you for asking

My whole little family is recovering from an evil little flu-bug that goes around here.

In spirit I am working my way forward taking it day by day. I sink into my tasks so the external negative energies dont affect me.

Everyday I try to implement mindfulness in my tasks.

What has happened is dead and the future is not born yet, I focus on “here and now”.

Me and one of the co-workers have this thing that helps both of us. We ask “How’s your zen?” 😄

    Kind regards
