Letter to disciples No.207: GLARING EYES, HOLDING RESENTMENT AND DOUBT, TAKING SELF-CREDIT, etc.. AND THE CONSEQUENCES ( Thư gửi các trò 207: MẮT GƯỜM, LÒNG HỜN DỖI, TÂM NGHI NGỜ, TÍNH KỂ CÔNG… VÀ HẬU QUẢ”)

Letter to disciples No.207: GLARING EYES, HOLDING RESENTMENT AND DOUBT, TAKING SELF-CREDIT, etc.. AND THE CONSEQUENCES
In the tradition of spiritual relationship between a Guru and a disciple, it is a must for the Guru to “point out directly the disciples’ hidden faults without any hesitation and concern about the possibility of being taken offense or quitting, or nurturing hatred (by the disciples)”. Therefore, I would like to present what I have seen, felt and pointed it out..

CRITICIZE THE GURU

It was written in Tantric Buddhist scriptures that there was one bad man who shot a hatred stare at a Buddhist sage; therefore, he was reborn into the realm of hungry ghosts after death. There, the hungry ghost accidentally met the Buddhist sage again while he was on his way propagating. The hungry ghost cranked up and glared angrily at the sage, which made it thereupon fall into the realm of hell. Perhaps while I am writing this article, that hungry ghost is still suffering extreme pain under fiery fire there. We may wonder that the hungry ghost should have done something good throughout his life, why was he reborn into the lower realms so quickly? He might grow some good deeds in his previous lives, possibly many good deeds; however, the amount was not enough to compensate for the bad deeds he created by offending a Buddhist sage.

So, if you refer to a similar case, but change the object from a Buddhist sage to a true Guru/Buddhist teacher, what are possibly the consequences? For disciples, Guru is the ultimate object in their practice, because “When the Guru gives a teaching, his teaching has no difference to the Buddha’s teaching; and when the Guru makes a Dharma transmission, that is the result of all the Buddhas’ cultivation practice. The disciples should always keep this in mind in order to make a proper devotion to Guru” (Zopa Rinpoche). On the contrary, the disciples committed the first commandment among fourteen commandments which says “To disrespect or criticize Guru” which is the most serious fault.
At Song Nguyen Tantra House, although I have always been cautious while applying wrathful practice, there were still people (both readers and disciples) who kept criticizing that by practicing wrathful method, Song Nguyen Tantra House proved itself to fall into the Eight Winds’ trap. I did explain about this practice in detail in an article named “What is wrathful practice? Why do Buddhist practitioners have to practice it?”. It is not just a random argumentative article but actually the right practice of Buddhist practitioners who abide by the Buddha’s teaching mentioned in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, Transmigration chapter; Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra, On Long Life chapter. Therefore, Mat Nguyen Tuy has cut off her root to Vajrayana Buddhism in her current and future lives. Because Mat Dai Chi maintained a close relationship with evil friends, he was expelled from Song Nguyen Tantra House despite his good deeds earlier.
There are cases in which the disciples did not directly criticize the Guru, however, they disagreed with the Guru’s decisions. They queried their Guru based on their rough observation of the outward appearance of an issue, but not the issue’s real meaning. Those “spiritual queries” lead them unknowingly to commit serious fault of “paying disrespect and criticizing the Guru”, which will accordingly damage seriously their accumulated amount of merits. They could easily ignore evil karmas which cause the death of living beings, but they kept questioning a Guru’s teaching through wrathful practice. It helps me to understand more thoroughly the Buddha’s teaching that said “Worry those things that are not worth being worried will increase affliction. Do not worry those things that are worth being worried will also increase affliction”. This case happened in Song Nguyen Tantra House, I won’t name anyone but hope that whoever recognizes their wrongdoings will reflect on themselves and accordingly show repentance.

SULKING AND RETALIATION
Recently we received an email from Bui Thi Hong Ngan in which she gathered from different sources on the internet. The letter revealed the evil doings of two old students of Song Nguyen Tantra House who had never reflected on themselves but kept blaming others and crying of complaint. They are Mat Dao Phap and Mat Quang Minh (Nguyen Ngoc Son) who I mentioned in another article named “Letter to Bui Thi Hong Ngan”.
Formerly, Mat Linh used to show a sulking attitude towards Guru after I applied the wrathful method to her for many faults that she had made. Mat Linh personally tended to cut off direct contact with the Guru. Two years later, Mat Linh showed repentance three times and wished for a chance to come back to Song Nguyen Tantra House; however, that was not approved. Unlike Mat Dao Phap and Mat Quang Minh, I did not expel Mat Linh but prohibited any relation with Song Nguyen Tantra House for ten years. They can meanwhile practice by themselves, however, they are not allowed to visit Song Nguyen Tantra House in Ho Chi Minh as Mat Thuy Ha.
In March 2017, there was one disciple in Ho Chi Minh city who reacted with bitter resentment to me and forced me into an awkward situation. It started with an incident in which the disciple showed self-pride, self-aggrandizement because he (or she) had done something big. Then, when being pointed out hidden faults through wrathful method by Guru in order to quickly purify his (her) bad karma, the disciple displayed a shocking lack of appreciation by attacking his (her) Guru. Fortunately, by the protection of Vajrayana guardian, I turned karmic power into inflexible resolve. Therefore, at that time, though I missed the A opportunity, we still achieved another B result beyond our expectation!
Until now, that disciple hasn’t admitted his (her) fault, which is just similar to the case of an artist who committed a sin in the US, then after coming back to Vietnam, he kept an innocent face as if nothing happened. After being ostracized, he made an apology video under the anxiety of losing his job. It is ridiculous that this person said he repented in front of the Buddha’s altar, then intentionally showed off that he had been seeking peace of mind in a pagoda located on a mountain and kept reciting the Buddha’s name. That is an act of hypocrisy. I would like to ask, does any Buddha give such kind of teaching? Because the Buddha pointed out the qualities of Buddhist practitioners are “self-respect” and “respect for others”, but this person lacks both of these qualities. Using the Buddha’s image and the Buddha’ teachings to cover his tricks make the impression about Buddhist practitioners of the outsiders’ eyes become despicable. I feel ashamed for this Chinese-born artist! In this case, who can believe this artist sincerely repented, and he was really determined to correct his faults and would not repeat them in the future?

DISPLAY TOLERANCE BUT ACCIDENTLY CAUSE DISASTERS
In some cases, when the Guru strictly used the wrathful method to a certain disciple, another disciple immediately defended and protected. Does that mean the latter disciple blame Guru for making a wrong reproof, or using excessive blame towards his disciple? Is it relevant to what the disciples kept repeating in sincerity as below?
We must abide by the Guru’s teaching,
Without any hesitation
We should not wait at our convenience,
Or else we will break the precept which causes bad consequences
Whatever teachings that Guru has given,
Guru already planned in detailed
Obey Guru’s teaching will help us to accumulate more merits,
Otherwise, it is a waste of time and effort following one’s will!
If you have already asserted these following phrases: “must abide by”, “without any hesitation”, “Guru already planned in detailed”, why did you have to analyze my teaching in your own logic? If you had listened to my teaching at first without any query, why did you change your mind and the plan accordingly? There were even students who were implicitly supporting outsiders to “forewarn” their Guru.
Back to the case in which the disciple who was involved in wrongdoings was defended and protected by another disciple, it is useless as we do not have any lawyer in Song Nguyen Tantra House. In reality, it is hard for these people to have good friends because their objection is not supported by relevant arguments, logic and proofs. They resemble kind of a typical “Yue Buqun” in Buddhism. Although they won’t cause significant disaster such as a complete extermination to “all heroes in the martial world”, they will create disunity and disharmony among individuals and inner circle. Moreover, these people directly caused Guru to feel the wrath (this kind of wrath is rooted in Dharma cause). Wrathful method was made as a representative of a Guru’s compassion to purify the disciples’ bad karma while he should have taken care of his health for the career of propagating Dharma. I hope that at Song Nguyen Tantra House, whoever has committed this fault will take this as a lesson and accordingly avoid committing again. Do not show off this act of “noble” trick which will conversely trigger bad consequences on you!

BURN ONE’S BRIDGES

Burn one’s bridges

There were cases in which the disciples had suffered from failures, poverty, business struggles, therefore they looked for me and asked for a shelter under the Three Jewels. After that, thanks to the Buddha’s blessing, their lives became much better, they could even buy their own houses and cars. However, at that point of their lives, they started to ignore practicing Dharma, they forgot to connect with their Guru, they neglected to visit chanhtuduy.com. Why? Because they are so confident about their present condition, to the extent that they strongly believe that it is hard for them to go bankrupt. As if a restaurant has been running a successful business for years, why should the owner mind asking for advice from the old advisor! Yes, that’s true! However, it’s true only in society and worldly affairs’ perspectives! They haven’t known that the Buddha strongly emphasized the importance of showing gratitude and repaying it, which means the Buddha also implied the consequences if human beings do the opposite. Why? As whatever is phenomenal is impermanent, how could they guarantee their success in the long term? Five sources of fire can burn all their accomplishments anytime, how could they avoid the bad consequences without Dharma shelter? There are many billionaires who have become empty-handed in just one night and even had to wait for charity. There are plenty of businessmen who ended up in prison as the result of ignoring the law of cause and effect. This is also the reason that many billionaires have dedicated themselves to charity activities as a way to express their gratitude to the society and community. For Buddhist practitioners, as I mentioned in many articles about the way we pay our gratitude, including (1) Gratitude for one’s Buddhist teacher/Guru (2) Gratitude for one’s country (3) Gratitude for one’s parents (4) Gratitude for all living beings. If someone made achievements in his life, but he forgot these debts of gratitude, it was like “without a strong basement, one cannot build a high wall because the consequence of being collapsed has already been there waiting” (Hou Hanshu). So what is the basement of a Vajrayana Buddhist practitioner? Even though many of you have already learnt it through my teachings, why are there still disciples who kept being so ignorant, and insensitive that they used that ignorant weapon repeatedly to attack my Bodhicitta? Although both my physical and spiritual body have been damaged by them, I haven’t regretted setting my foot on Bodhisattva path. I have already foreseen and accepted the harsh side of this world which can possibly be found in my disciples’ mind. Moreover, as you can already see that I am now living a leisure, comfortable and happy life without any attachment; I have no demand for any better source of material, mental, and spiritual support, do I need any offerings from the disciples? It was just a concern for you.

 

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES?
As you have read “50 verses of Guru Devotion”, “The Thirty-seven practices of Bodhisattvas”, you might already know the consequences of being irreverent. I just wanted to mention some particular cases as below:

1. Those who used to follow Buddhism, however, they kept paying worship to the goddess of fortune which was received from their adoptive mother. How is their current business going? The disciples from Hanoi must know the answer.
2. To those who are stingy, and meant to steal Dharma teachings, did they get promoted successfully? The disciples from Hanoi must also know the answer.
3. To those who hold resentment towards the Guru, did they make any accomplishment in their lives or just bad consequences? The disciples from Vung Tau will know the answer.
4. To the person who held resentment and even planned to take revenge to the Guru, how did she experience the hell realm within just one day in her company? The disciples from Sai Gon will know the answer.
5. There are many other cases that I don’t want to mention more.

To students and disciples in Song Nguyen Tantra House, in case they commit those above mentioned faults, they will according receive these following treatments:
1. Being expelled
2. Being prohibited of any relation
3. They will possibly gain worldly blessing, however, it is impossible for them to gain merits, virtue. After death, they will be reborn into human beings’ realm or heavenly realm in their best scenarios.
4. Guru won’t abandon them but they won’t receive any attention from the Guru in regard to their spiritual destinies. Therefore, it is impossible for them to pray with the 3rd spiritual key prayer.

Five ways that will be treated by the Guru are as follows:
1. Not teaching/giving instructions of doing good things (the disciples are now allowed to listen directly to Dharma teachings)
2. Not assigning good works (the disciples are not assigned Dharma works)
3. Not receiving benefits equally (the disciples won’t receive Dharma materials when they are available)
4. Not allowed to come to the holy site (the disciples are not allowed to come to the Tantra House)
5. Not allowed to get in touch with anyone in Song Nguyen Tantra House

Four solutions
1. Making oral repentance or paying homage or reciting sutra every day, once per day.
2. Directly ask the Guru to recover the broken commandments after 2 months of self-repentance.
3. Stop negative thoughts about the Guru, instead, the disciples should praise Guru’s virtue and be grateful for Guru’s wrathful method.
4. Make offerings if being approved by the Guru.
I would like to end the lesson here. May all sentient beings’ sufferings be decreased. May all sentient beings be aware of their state of mind.

    I have read this article. I am grateful for your teaching in this article as it has pointed out clearly the different circumstances, which I should be careful to not violate to the first Tantric vows: “Show respect and do not criticize the Guru”.
    As Holy Guru has explained clearly in this article about four types of wrong doings or actions that I should be aware of and reflect my own actions of body, speech and mind, including; (1) criticizing the Guru directly or indirectly (disagree with Guru’s decision); (2) Showing sulking and retaliation actions; (3) Displaying tolerance but accidently cause disasters as disagree with Guru’s teaching or decisions; (4) neglect and forget about practicing Dharma as neglect and forget about the gratitude for one’s Buddhist teacher / Guru. I understand that these kinds of wrongdoings will happen if I let my ego or “self-pride” take control of my mind and neglect the Guru’s teaching. I understand that if I want to be healthy I need to drink clean water. And in order to have clean water I need to boil out the water to eliminate the harmful elements. With the same meaning, holy Guru applies wrathful methods to help boil out or eliminate the harmful thinking or wrongdoings and helps us to have clean water (Dharma teaching). I understand that all the talk needs to have clear action to prove it. If I act opposite to my talking, I would be such a “two-face” person and eventually get the bad consequences.
    Thank you holy Guru for such an important lesson in this article. May holy Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
    May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.
    May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

Qua bài, con hiểu rằng phương tiện phẫn nộ là đại diện cho tấm lòng từ bi của vị Thầy để giúp người trò tịnh hóa nghiệp chướng xấu ác, trong khi lẽ ra vị Thầy có thể nghỉ ngơi và chăm sóc sức khỏe của Thầy vì sự nghiệp hoằng dương Chánh Pháp. Con nhớ đã từng đọc một mẩu chuyện ví dụ trên chanhtuduy.com, đại ý rằng có một cái nồi bị dơ lâu ngày và có người đang ra sức kì cọ để tẩy sạch những cặn bẩn bám trên nồi. Nếu cái nồi biết kêu, có thể nó sẽ kêu la rằng “đau quá, xin đừng cọ rửa mạnh tay như vậy, tôi không chịu nổi” nhưng nếu không mạnh tay, cái nồi không thể hết được những vết bẩn cứng đầu và không thể trở lại vẻ sáng bóng như ban đầu. Con cảm niệm rằng từ vô thủy kiếp đến nay, chúng con đã huân tập biết bao tập khí xấu, những niệm tưởng bất chánh, bản tâm trong sáng uyên nguyên trong mỗi chúng con bị ẩn sâu trong tầng tầng lớp lớp vô minh mịt mờ. Chỉ có vị Thầy là người duy nhất giúp chúng con dần tìm lại chân tâm của mình bằng nhiều phương tiện thiện xảo, trong đó có pháp phẫn nộ để phá tan sự vô minh, phá tan cái ngã “của tôi, do tôi, vì tôi” vi tế trong chúng con. Con vẫn nhớ câu chuyện về Đạo sư Marpa đã đánh đập, chửi mắng đệ tử Milarepa để tịnh hóa nghiệp chướng của Ngài Milarapa- người sau đó một đời thành Phật, và nhiều câu chuyện khác. Con tự hỏi có người nào dám phán xét Ngài Marpa là nhẫn tâm, ác với đệ tử của mình hay không khi Ngài đã đào tạo được một đệ tử một đời thành Phật, và liệu Ngài Milarepa có đạt được thành tựu tối thượng như vậy nếu Ngài không vượt qua được sự tịnh hóa đến từ vị Thầy mình. Con cảm niệm rằng nếu ai trong chúng con có xúc động khi đọc được những câu chuyện về tình Sư- Đệ như trên trong các giai thoại Đạo Phật, vậy sao không xúc động khi chính bản thân mình đang được trải nghiệm sự tịnh hóa từ pháp phẫn nộ của vị Đạo sư, cũng được duyên lành Sư-đệ hy hữu như các vị Thành Tựu Giả ngày trước. Con hiểu rằng vị Thầy đã rất kham nhẫn khi giáo hóa chúng trò ương ngạnh, dù có những người trò không hiểu và quay lại đâm mũi giáo vào tấm lòng Bồ đề của vị Thầy nhưng vị Thầy vẫn không dừng nghỉ trên con đường giáo hóa chúng sanh.
    Con cảm tạ ơn Thầy đã từ bi giảng giải cho chúng con, giúp chúng con quán xét bản thân và loại trừ lỗi lầm của mình, không gây nhân bất kính vị Thầy để tránh hậu quả trong hiện tại và tương lai.
    Con thành tâm cầu nguyện cho sức khỏe và sự trường thọ của vị Thầy vì sự lợi lạc của tất cả chúng sanh.
    Đệ hoan hỷ tán thán công đức dịch bài của đạo huynh Cao Diệu Mật Từ. Đệ cầu nguyện huynh tinh tấn hành Pháp và thành tựu những ước nguyện chính đáng.
    Cầu nguyện tất cả chúng sanh thành tựu hạnh phúc Phật tánh.
    Cầu nguyện đại dịch Covid 19 mau chóng được tiêu trừ.

I do not wish to disrespect you holy guru. I have always appreciated your guidance even when I was wrong and needed corrected though I do remembef feeling hurt until I realized what a gift it wad to ne corrected.
