Letter to disciples No. 291: LECTURING BUDDHIST TEACHINGS IS DIFFERENT FROM “GOSSIPING” ( Thư gửi các trò 291: GIẢNG BÀI KHÁC VỚI “TÁM CHUYỆN”)

Dear disciples,
It can be seen that every teacher (religious teachers of different religions) has their own way to address lectures, teachings. In Buddhism, the teachers may be at different levels of competence, however, they have to comply with the main principle in Buddhism; which means their teachings must be based on Buddha doctrine that were affirmed by the enlightened and holy ones. Buddha doctrine indicates all main themes that were summarized by the Buddha, the enlightened and holy ones; for example, the Four Noble Truths (the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering); “Twelve links of dependent origination” (which indicates a chain of twelve links of dependent origination that keep rotating from this link to the other, in one life, as well as continuous lives. Twelve links include: ignorance, the ignorance creates the formation of karma, formations cause the consciousness the next existence, by the power of consciousness, name and form are created, then the six inner ayatanas of the sense faculties arise from name and form, the coming together of objects, sense faculty and consciousness is contact, from contact arises sensation, there then develops craving (a desire not to be separated from pleasure sensations), as craving increases, it develops into grasping, through this grasping one acts with body, speech and mind and forms existence, through the power of existence, it creates rebirth, following rebirth is old age and death); “the law of cause and effect”, “Impermanence”, “The doctrine of no-self”, or three main principles including Renunciation, Bodhicitta and Emptiness, etc.

Buddha doctrine indicates all main themes that were summarized by the Buddha, the enlightened and holy ones; for example, the Four Noble Truths

All these above mentioned concepts belong to Buddhist literature. In regard to the practices, there are different specific methods to practice in reality. Paying more attention to Buddhist literature will grant the practitioners wisdom, otherwise, they gain compassion in case of making most focus on practicing. However, in order to support the practitioners to achieve more in studying Dharma, cultivating Dharma (mind transformation by maintaining awakening), and practicing Dharma (doing Dharma exercises, including 10 Buddhist activities: prostrating, repenting, making offerings, listening to Dharma, lecturing Dharma, praying, chanting the Buddha’s name, reciting mantra, meditating, offering Buddhist scriptures, books); I would like to provide the more insights into the science of logical reasoning (hetuvidya), one of the five sciences which help Buddhist practitioners to improve their knowledge and wisdom.

All these above mentioned concepts belong to Buddhist literature. In regard to the practices, there are different specific methods to practice in reality

Dear disciples,
For Buddhist teachers, there are two main areas of focus: (1) provide lectures by oral-teaching or writing; (2) practice other Dharma methods which cover other Buddhist activities. Providing lectures can be done by all teachers, however, the main concern is that those lectures must be based on the Buddha’s teachings, which means they are supported by arguments and proofs extracted from Buddhist scriptures. There are many Buddhist teachers who are absolutely experts in carrying smooth lectures, their lectures are presented in a humorous tone which attract many listeners. However, there is nothing left in the listeners’ mind after listening out of the only impression that “He is very humorous, his lecture brings me joy!”, or “His teaching made me moved to tears”. Those kinds of comments should be made towards famous speakers, MCs such as Hoang Xuan Viet, Do Hong Ngoc or MC. Tran Thanh, Truong Giang, Thanh Bach, etc., because it is their expertise! A Buddhist teacher who gives Buddhist lectures, or the so-called “wisdom advisor”, or “Buddhist preceptor” should not be addressed that way! Venerable Hsuan Hua affirmed that a lecture should be taught correctly, rather than sounded humorously, or nicely. One of “128 evil and erroneous views” that was pointed out by Wanko Yeshe Norbu also said: “The view that one who expounds the Dharma in a gentle voice is definitely a Bodhisattva (No.69)”.

People who share this evil and erroneous view define real Bodhisattvas as those propagators who deliver lectures in a soft voice, “seem-to-be” compassionate melody. You should bear in mind that many Buddhist teachers could change their voice purposely to fit the audience’s taste. That’s why many people were deceived just by listening to soft voices and concluded that the owners of those voices are the Bodhisattvas’ incarnation. In reality, they were deliberate in their actions. All the teachings that they lectured are more of non-Buddhism’s intention than the ultimate truth that the Buddha had taught. Therefore, you should not wrongly equate someone who lectures in a soft and loving voice as a Bodhisattva. Vocal difference does not play any role in making someone a Bodhisattva. It must be based on Buddhist standards to decide if one is an actual Bodhisattva or not.

So how to detect an actual one? That Buddhist teacher must abide by main principles in Buddhism based on “the five means of knowledge”, including (1) reasoning from the appearance, (2) Inference, (3) the argument or evidence of authority in logic (4) the example in logic (5) appropriate application in miracle powers. In any Buddhist lecture, no matter who is the teacher, whether they are Venerable or monks in famous monasteries, if they do not abide by the standard of “argument or evidence of authority in logic”, they are merely “speakers”, “MCs” (master of ceremonies), or “non-Buddhist teachers”. In case the lectures are not supported by the Buddha and other Buddhist successors’ teachings, all those lectures are merely “mediocre narratives”. Furthermore, if their lectures’ outline are disconnected (incoherent), strayed from the main Buddhist theme, overwhelmed by worldly arguments (lack of Buddhist teachings focus), etc., the discourse become pretty much a “gossip” (In Vietnamese, a slang for “gossip” is commonly used is “8”, because this number represents a cranky and twisty shape, which has no boundary (no beginning or ending). That is similar to those who are experts in gossiping a lot on all kinds of topics, without any focus). Even though those lectures might attract many listeners and ended up with the audience’s exciting applause, it was just a thing that normal people, clowns, and many MCs could do the same.

In Vietnamese, a slang for “gossip” is commonly used is “8”, because this number represents a cranky and twisty shape, which has no boundary (no beginning or ending)

Another grievous failure that is originated from a lack of “the argument or evidence of authority in logic” was made by many Buddhist teachers; they tended to address their lectures by their own standpoints and reasonings, which was warned by the Buddha in the Sutra of forty-two sections (Don’t trust your subjective thought, it is not trustworthy. You can only trust your mind’s judgement when you achieve full enlightenment). There is also one common idiom that said “A picture is worth a thousand words” which emphasizes the importance of having evidence of authority; not to mention that the standard of Buddhist teachings are much higher. On the other hand, while addressing a lecture in one’s own tone, without considering the exact inference from the Buddhist scriptures; the lecturers naturally showed off his shamelessness and haughtiness. Did they mean that they had already achieved full enlightenment? The Buddha must feel deep grief to see his disciples give lectures by their own subjective thoughts and reasonings, purposely ignoring Buddhist scriptures and the Buddha’s teachings which were lectured throughout 45 years to spread the right view to all sentient beings. Then how come teachings that were lectured by mortal people, or mortal monks, without any support from evidence and argument of Buddhist scriptures can deliver sublime meaning of getting full enlightenment? If they keep seeding the sow of samsara, you can infer by yourself their consequences.

The boat of morality can carry as many knights as possible without being full. The pen of fighting can thrust as many evildoers as possible without being dull”

Dear disciples,
The Buddha had anticipated that Papiyan (A Buddhist term for those who intentionally commit wrongdoings) would disguise themselves as bhikkhus, and one type of demon named “Bhikkhu” demon who always dress themselves in Buddhist robes, would took advantage of their appearance to deceive human beings. Therefore, the Buddha pointed out four main principles named “the four reliances” in order for the Buddhist practitioners not to mistake copper for gold:
The four reliances (four basic principles for thorough Buddhism understanding) includes: (1) Relying on the teaching, not merely on person who teaches it (2) Relying on the true meaning or spirit of Dharma statement in sutra, not merely on the words of the statement (3) Relying on the sutras that give ultimate teachings, not on those which preach expedient teachings (5) Relying on intuitive wisdom, not on intellectual or normal understanding. I would like to make it clearer by the argument or evidence of authority in logic as below:

  • Relying on the teaching, not merely on the person who teaches it: which means one should rely on the Dharma and its true meaning, not on any individual whoever they are (which was addressed in Kalama sutra).
  • Relying on the true meaning or spirit of Dharma statement in sutra, not merely on the words of the statement (relying on the meaning of the teaching, not on the expression): which means one should comprehend the core meaning of teaching based on Buddhism spirit, not by interpreting word by word, because many sutras were added, designated, modified and accordingly fell out of the right Dharma track. Those are Buddhist apocryphal or Spurious sutras.
  • Relying on the sutras that give ultimate teachings, not on those which preach expedient teachings: Relying on discourses of definite meaning for the purpose of getting full enlightenment, not on discourses of interpretable meaning which will end up sowing the seed of being reborn into human beings, Gods, Demi-gods, Demon realms.
  • Relying on intuitive wisdom, not on intellectual or normal understanding (trust in wisdom growing out of eternal truth and not in illusory knowledge, or conditioned consciousness): Intuitive wisdom is decisive factor to achieve liberation, while conditioned consciousness is made by mental fabrications, acts as a “life force” by which there is a continuity across rebirths. Therefore, authentic sutras must be comprehended by the help of Wisdom, do not try to explain or understand it by illusory knowledge or conditioned consciousness.

Among “The four reliances”, the most important reliance principle is “Relying on the teaching, not merely on the person who teaches it ”. Therefore, many great examples can be seen in reality such as Sarva-nirvaraṇa-viṣkaṃbhin Bodhisattva (Disposing of Hindrances Bodhisattva) relied on the teaching of a layman practitioner who was represented as a person lacks virtue at a small market, in Baranasi, a city in northern India; Professor Li Bingnan, a layman practitioner, is Buddhist teacher of Venerable Master Chin Kung. Vajrayana Master Dilgo Khyentse is the spiritual advisor to HH the 14th Dalai Lama. The greatest example is Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, who is the founder of four Buddhist lineages in Vajrayana Buddhism. Guru Rinpoche is also a Bodhisattva layman practitioner.
From these above reference sources, it can be concluded that we must stay alert in both written and spoken lectures. There are many books that were published just to make a name for the authors. There are many Buddhist teachers, abbots, monks who stole other persons’ intellectual property by attaching their Dharma names on many creations of others, even more than 50 times. The readers only knew the truth when the real author exposed all the evidence, as it is impossible to use different tones and styles of writing in many books that are written by one author. Or there are many books that were written by famous monks overwhelming with the author’s “history of cultivating Dharma” from the first to the last page, which means the only motive for them to write books is “The three egos” (me, mine, myself).

Dear disciples,
I am writing this letter to equip you with the bodhyanga of discrimination when you start to read Buddhist books, or listen to lectures from different Buddhist teachers; thereafter you will be able to recognize by yourself the true value of those teachings and the teachers, and why their “lectures” are no more or less than a “gossip”. The consequences of making wrong assessments are tragedies, in which the practitioners plunge into evil and erroneous views, while they still keep the thought that they are on the right path. Listening to Papiyan’s teachings which are totally deviated from the right Dharma, they still blindly think that they are blessed with the quintessence of Amrta. By this letter, you also understand more deeply why I started my vow as:

‘The boat of morality can carry as many knights as possible without being full. The pen of fighting can thrust as many evildoers as possible without being dull”

“The boat of morality can carry as many knights as possible without being full
The pen of fighting can thrust as many evildoers as possible without being dull”
As a matter of course, I have my utmost admiration for all the venerable Buddhist teachers who are determined to follow the spirit of the second ultimate person. I pray for them to activate the right thought and intent, grow their Bodhicitta to the right orbit of Dharma. Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear Holy Guru,

In this article, I have learnt what to look for when selecting a reliable source for my Buddhist study and practice, the 4 reliance:

    (1) Relying on the teaching, not merely on person who teaches it
    (2) Relying on the true meaning or spirit of Dharma statement in sutra, not merely on the words of the statement
    (3) Relying on the sutras that give ultimate teachings, not on those which preach expedient teachings
    (4) Relying on intuitive wisdom, not on intellectual or normal understanding.

Reading chanhtuduy.com helped equipped me with the right views to avoid falling to the traps of appearances of the fake monks. The articles are written simply, purposefully, and with clear examples so that I understand the essentials (without getting a headache). I’m grateful for the Guru’s wisdom and compassion.

Venerable Hsuan Hua affirmed that a lecture should be taught correctly, rather than sounded humorously, or nicely. As a disciple, I should look forward to learning knowledge of liberation from the Guru, not to be entertained or spoiled. Thank you for teaching me that proud spirit of “Relying on the teaching, not merely on the person who teaches it.”

May the Guru have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature. May the Covid 19 pandemic will soon be over.

I rejoice with Mat Tu’s good deeds of translating this article and many others. May Mat Tu achieve all rightful wishes.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  6. tantra mahavita says:

Dear Holy Guru : Thank you so much …long life and longevity Guru….. All sentient being find Budhha Nature .Pandemic end …OM MANI PADME HUM

  7. Cao Diệu Diệu Hằng says:

    Dear holy Guru,
Thank you so much for your teaching. I have learnt that the true and valuable teachings from a Buddhist teacher are to help all sentient beings be free from suffering and get enlightenment based on Buddha doctrine. These teachings are perfect if theory is clear, practical easy to understand and goes hand in hand with effective methods of practicing. Even the theory gives the listeners joy or make them moved in tears but it will become non sense if it can not lead the listeners the ultimate state of enlightenment with the detailed methods to correct the actions of body, speech and mind.
Taming the mind needs to do frequently and take time. The Buddhist followers need the methods to practice daily. The process to learn Buddhism is listening – contemplating – practicing. If the listening gets in vain, the two others have no results. The listening is in according to the Buddha’s doctrine, the listeners need to contemplate the deep meaning of the listening (teaching), but no methods, it is too difficult for them to practice abd follow the teaching in daily life. Therefore, theory always connect with practice, teaching always link with methods to practice. I have found the perfect connection of theory and practice at Song Nguyen Tantra House through your articles, through your six marvelous spiritual innovations.
Thank you so much for your guidance. I am happy to praise your wisdom and bodhicitta to spread Buddha teachings and methods to practice dharma all over the world for the benefit of all sentient beings.
May you have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
I am delighted with the good deeds of Mat Tu who has translated your article into English in order that many people can read your articles and get more understanding about Buddha teachings and methods of practicing dharma on the right track.
May Mat Tu get her righteous wishes on the path to enlightenment.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.
May covid 19 pandemic end soon.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear holy Guru!
I am grateful to read this article. Through your explanation in this article along with clear arguments or evidence of authority in logic, such as The Four Reliances, I am able to understand and identify whether a lecture is an actual Dharma lecture or just a “gossip” story.
Relating to Buddhism, I understand that all the lectures (in the form of oral teaching or writing) should be based on the Buddha’s teachings (which means they are supported by arguments and proofs extracted from Buddhist scriptures). Based on the five main principles that the holy Guru mentioned in this article, I could be able to detect whether a lecture is an actual Dhamra lecture. I understand that any lectures or talkings, which do not focus on Buddha’s teaching but just mention about eating, curing diseases, etc are just “gossip” talks or stories. Furthermore, any lectures or subjective opinions, which refer to Buddhism topics but do not based on Buddha’s teaching or purposely ignore Buddhist scriptures, are also “gossip” talk or “gossip” stories.
Thank you holy Guru for your teaching in this article. May holy Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

    Dear Guru,
I am delighted to read the article.
Through it, I am thankful for all your explanation to I understand that How to recognize the lecturing Buddhist teachings is different from Gossiping. Because in Buddhism, the teachers may be at different levels of competence, however, they have to comply with the main principle in Buddhism. This means their teachings must be based on the Buddha doctrine that was affirmed by the enlightened and holy ones. If it was lacking the Buddha’s teachings, this means lacking arguments and proofs extracted from Buddhist scriptures. It makes them fall into the Gossiping, even though the lecture makes which are presented in humorous, happy, or shed tears. I will keep in mind the teaching of Guru “It must be based on Buddhist standards to decide if one is an actual Bodhisattva or not” by “the five means of knowledge” and “the four reliances”.
Not only that, in “The four reliances”, the most important reliance principle is “Relying on the teaching, not merely on the person who teaches it”. I feel that one more time, I am grateful to Guru’s wisdom and compassion who built the castles Chanhtuduy.com which helps me the equipping the right views to avoid falling into the traps of the appearance of the fake monk as mistake copper for gold.
May Guru have good health and live long for all the sake of sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the Buddha nature’s happiness.
May the COVID 19 will end soon.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear Holy Guru
    I am Tantra Haramitra

I thank you for this lesson. On my path I have come across many people who teach only what they think people want to hear, churn out what others have said or tell so many jokes that all you take from it was he’s “so funny”.

And yet a few, like you Holy Guru, speak in such a way that those listening are drawn into the words and filled with a spirit that permeates their consciousness.

Thank you Holy Guru for reminding us that there are those who would take us down the wrong path and that we must listen to our inner voice to help decided who teaches with the dharma at the heart of their words.

Holy Guru, May you have a long healthy life for the benefit of all sentient beings

    I’m mani padme hum 🙏🏼
