Letter to Disciples No. 294: WATCHING RAIN FALLING DOWN…( Ngắm mưa rơi…)

Letter to Disciples No. 294: WATCHING RAIN FALLING DOWN…( Ngắm mưa rơi…)

It’s afternoon now! The rain comes down drip drop drip drop! I am watching this natural picture through the window of the living-room of Song Nguyen Tantra House. I can feel the whole gamut of emotions from the rain, not just the monotonous tone as a song once said: “Each rain drop is each drop of sadness”…

Suddenly I remember the time when my consort and I were having a rest in Hoang Mai Coc (Yellow Apricot Bungalow) listening to the sound of the rain, we felt warm inside for knowing that we’re luckier than many homeless people or those who stay in a forlorn inn listening to the sad rain song every night. The rain, irrespective of comforting or laying blame on Hoang Mai Coc, is always a chorus of boundless blessings.

The rain, irrespective of comforting or blaming Hoang Mai Coc, is always a chorus of boundless blessings

Tinh Khanh Phong (Pure Joy Chamber)

The rain also creates a beautiful picture in Tinh Khanh Phong (Pure Joy Chamber) as drops of rain continuously slide down the thick glass of the window. They chase each other down the pane until the rain totally stops. Likewise, the experience of painful sufferings will end until we encounter the Buddhist Dharma.

Celestial flowers as Guru was expounding Dharma

The rain in Lien Hoa Dai (Lotus Platform), meanwhile, is a sacred sign manifesting celestial flowers falling down whenever we hold a Dharma lecture or activity. This was already explained in many of my previous letters.

There are thousands of songs about rain with different tunes and thousands of poems that describe the rain with different emotions. They, however, are not able to erase the trace of samsara. A heavy rain can sweep away everything but a rain of Dharma will wipe out ignorance without moving even a small piece of paper. Natural rains fall down on everything equally, irrespective of their locations or traits. Similarly, the Dharma rainwater of Buddhist saints lands on every sentient beings, irrespective of whether they are monk or lay person, provided they are in favorable conditions or environment for a full collection. This is called the impartiality of a true Emptiness or sunyata. Just like a praise Shakyamuni Buddha sent to Avalokiteshvara: “O bhikkhus, even if the rain stays day after day, month after month, year after year, even kalpa after kalpa, still I can count the number of raindrops! But I could not count the merit of saving sentient beings and the spirit of Bodhicitta of Avalokiteshvara” (Avalokiteśvara-guṇa-karanda-vyūha). Once again, I prove to you why the heathen are still able to achieve their wishes from praying. Once again, I prove to you the limitless benevolence of Avalokiteshvara!

“..O bhikkhus, even if the rain stays day after day, month after month, year after year, even kalpa after kalpa, still I can count the number of raindrops! But I could not count the merit of saving sentient beings and the spirit of Bodhicitta of Avalokiteshvara..”

Even it is “Autumn raindrop”, “Forest rain”, “Rain in Hue Citadel”, “Sad rain”, “As rain still flies”, “Last season’s rain”, “Afternoon rain falls on the way back”, “As rain still falls on the flow of life”, “The rain falls on your hair and drop on the gun’s head”…all are merely the beauty of Samsara.

Watching the rain without missing someone, without being overwhelmed by eight worldly concerns or shaken by a tumult of feelings

Watching the rain without missing someone, without being overwhelmed by eight worldly concerns or shaken by a tumult of feelings, all of my actions (listening and watching) revolve around the axis of Guru-Buddha-Dharma-Sangha: “Although your Guru’s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will never fall down unless you have a field of devotion” (from Teachings of Padmasambhava). Sitting here watching the rain dancing out there, I think about the deeper layers of meaning of the nature’s beauty, not just exteriors that poets, writers or painters used to convey. Now do you know why my articles are often ended with “A rainy afternoon on the peak of Phu Van Mountain”?

“Although your Guru’s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will never fall down unless you have a field of devotion”

Whether it is the sunlight or rainfall, all are as impermanent as Phu Van (floating clouds). I don’t want to capture in my mind of whatever I’ve done or written because

“As clouds are floating in the sky

No traces are left nor upon the world they shine”.

May all sentient beings be awakened in the state of enlightenment.

Om Mani Padme Hum!

    Dear Holy Guru,

I’m so moved to read your article “Watching rain falling down..”
The beauty of rain out there vary depend on emotion of people. Many poets, artist and song writers have inspired by rain but all are merely the beauty of Samsara. The rain in Guru’s eyes is full of blessing and gratitude although the rain is at Tantra House or on the peak of mountain. Because dedicated Guru want to help all sentient beings out of the painful Samsara  “a heavy rain can sweep out everything but the Dharma rain will wipe out ignorance without moving a small piece of paper”.  Your blessing rain is equal to all practitioners, disciples and all sentient beings but we are able to be in that Dharma rain or not depend on our devotion and belief toward Guru. I can’t thank you enough for your dedication, Bodhicitta, compassion, for what you have done for us, your disciples and all beings with your marvelous invention Pure Mind Yoga and chanhtuduy.com, it’s true to say that “even if it’s rain day after day, month after month, year after year, even kalpa after kalpa, we still can count the numbers of raindrop but we couldn’t count the merit of saving sentient beings and the spirit of Bodhicitta of Avalokiteshvara” . I happily praise your Bodhicitta, wisdom and generosity. Thank you so much to give us the opportunity to follow you on the path to the Enlightenment. Thank you so much for another beneficial article which full of “Dharma is life, life is Dharma” spirit.

I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Covid-19 pandemic will eliminate soon.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.

  8. Tantra Denirkirta says:

    Dear Guru,
This is a well written article with much art in it, as well as substance. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us!

  9. Mật Nhất Nguyên says:

    Dear Guru,

I’m grateful for the article with many beautiful images. Rain in the worldly eyes evoke different worldly feelings. However, after reading the article, I think of rain as the blessings from the Yidam deity through the transmission channel of the Guru. And I will sure get those blessings through Guru devotion — “Although your Guru’s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will never fall down unless you have a field of devotion” (from Teachings of Padmasambhava).

Without learning from the Guru, I only see the world is an unfair game and will feel hopeless with many problem. By learning with the Guru, I’m now much happier and try to view everything is a reason to benefit me and all sentient beings. I’m grateful to be walking on the path of liberation.

I’m grateful for the Guru’s article. May the Guru and His Consort have good health for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature. May the Covid-19 pandemic will soon be over.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  11. Mật Khuê Minh says:

    Dear holy Guru
I rejoiced to read the article “Watching the rain falling down.”
How blessed when I read Guru’s article, it was also the time when the cool raindrops were falling. The heavy rain helped dispel the stifling heat of the sweltering summer at the city where I live. It was special moving at the moment, the Guru’s article helped me to see the great luck and blessing when I meet the Thanh Tri lineage ancestor, the Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh in this life, who brought to us and sentient beings the rains of Dharma wipe out ingonorance, dispel the suffering of reincanation realms. The rain in the eyes of the human in the world contains many different emotions, but it still bears the vestige of reincarnation realms. The rain under the Guru’s pen also made me feel a lot of emotions, but all things revolve around the axis of Guru – Buddha – Dharma – Sangha. This help us always interested, afferent, focused on the goal of ultimate liberation. I would like to keep in mind that “Althought your Guru’s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will be never fall down unless you have a field of devotion”.
May Guru and his consort live long for the sake of humans beings.
May Covid 19 pandemic will be come the end soon.
    Om mani padme hum.

  12. Thomas Charles says:

Hello once again, Most Holy . The men always trying to promote a positive outlook, calls rain “liquid sunshine”. Those who cultivate the Dharma can view all worldly circumstances in a similar manner. Thank you as always for your excellent teaching. Om Mani Padme Hum.

  16. Tantra Midhita says:

    Dear Guru,

Rain here is common, but not torrential. Very vague ambiguous rain. I envy the days that rain, for they “pass like a thing”. Never do we really have thunder, and sorely do I miss the cacophony. Like a private orchestra in my head. Either way, I am left feeling sad when the rain leaves, for I know it brings life. Lately I have tried bringing the rain in an internal way. Better eating, meditation, study. I am trying to water the nature that is the vessel.

Today I write this, but today I will also re-read this article, so it may precipitate in my mind a better understanding.

Thank you Guru for this article.
May peace be in your day.

  17. Mật Khánh Văn says:

    Dear Guru,
I am very interested and fascinated when reading the article of Guru. Contrary to the rain in nature, the rain in the Dharma helps to erase all the suffering. So the rain in the Dhamma then brought beings great blessings. We too want to be watered in the blessing of Blessing, which is indispensable to the faith in the Guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha and devotion to Guru.
    Thank you so much!
May Guru and his consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
May the coronavirus pandemic will be soon over.
    Om Mani Padme Hum!

  18. Mật Đức says:

    Dear holy Guru
    I have read the article
I sincerely thank you for this helpful article with lots of emotion. Thereby I understood that the blessing of the Guru, Buddha, Dharma like a rain of blessings and when the disciple had a devotion to the Guru, believed in the Buddha, Dharma to receive that blessing and be free from reincarnation death.
May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
    OM MANI PADME HUM.

  20. Mật Thủy says:

    Dear Guru,

I’m happy to reread your article in the English version. The rain falling down at Song Nguyen Tantra House is so beautiful, not only because of the spiritual construction but also as the blessing meaning behind the raining image. After reading this lesson, whenever watching at the rain, instead of coming up with the mundane ideas, I will be reminded of Guru, the blessing from Buddha via Guru’s channel transmitting to us as long as we nurture a field of devotion.

May the Dharma rain will wipe out ignorance and purify our mind.
May Guru good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May the Covid-19 pandemic soon come to an end.
