Letter to disciples No.92: WHO WILL SAVE YOU IN THE NIGHTMARE? ( Thư gửi các trò 92: Trong ác mộng ai cứu mình?)

Dear disciples,

Recently Mat Tu wrote an article telling a story in her nightmare in which she encountered extremely frightening scenes. In that situation, Mat Tu remembered to remind her companion to perform taking refuge in the Three Jewels, then reciting the Mani mantra as quickly as possible, as if “extinguishing the fire that burns on one’s head”. Afterwards, Mat Tu saw Guru standing in a high tower waving at her. Getting the right direction, Mat Tu ran towards Guru and eventually escaped the danger (read more at the article “The nightmare and Guru” on chanhtuduy.com).

Is that Guru really me? Based on the appearance, it must be me so that Mat Tu could easily recognize. Then because of recognizing me, Mat Tu was rescued. While Mat Tu had her nightmare on 7 May 2014, I was on a Dharma trip in Ho Chi Minh city. Plus, I am just a mortal being, I do not have any kind of supernatural powers to know her situation and come to help in time.. Therefore, the Guru that Mat Tu met in her nightmare was not Guru Nguyen Thanh who utilized iddhi-vidha (the superpower to take any form at will) to rescue his disciple.

Then who is that Guru? It was also Guru Nguyen Thanh, Mat Tu’s teaching spiritual advisor. But who did that Guru come from? He came from her pure original ocean of mind, which is called the Buddha nature, the natural purity, the original face. Therefore, I confirmed that Guru was created by Mat Tu’s true nature.

However, it should be noticed that not all Buddhist practitioners could summon the savior in the form of vital spirit while dreaming. Because in the state of dreaming, one exists in another indefinite substance which is frequently wavered from one scene to another without any logic. The eyesight and hearing ability will be neutralized with uncertain experiences, all the perceptions are totally controlled by the instinct sentiment. In this situation, the Buddhist practitioner’s body, mind and speech often react in a way they usually did in their previous lives, or they solved the problem due to the instinct that they tried to hold back in reality.

Regarding Mat Tu’s case, she was awake during the state of dreaming. She did not forget to practice Dharma, and gave instruction to others to take refuge in the Three Jewels (Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha), and to recite the Mani mantra. Thanks to these means, the Buddha nature which stays in each being was activated and weaved the ray of thoughts from Mat Tu’s mind into a luminous picture of Guru. Therefore, Guru not only rescued Mat Tu from the danger but also brought her to the realm of Pure land. So, Mat Tu was the one who saved herself in the nightmare, the Guru only plays the role of spiritual means.

Mani mantra

This case fits perfectly to the teaching of Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava in his book named “The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate states” that “Regarding the liberation in the intermediate states, this period lengthens 21 days in which one will suffer frightening scenes that was fabricated by his own illusions. In a thick darkness, there will be roars and screams that keep shouting out loud: “Beat him! Kill him!”. Many evils, a lot of wild beasts will chase the soul fiercely with their weapons. The soul has no choice but to run under crazy storms, hurricanes and strong winds. At that time, the ocean surges through its massive tidal waves, the mountain collapses to the ground and the fires are burning everywhere. In this case, what should we do?

the mountain collapses to the ground and the fires are burning everywhere

If the soul hasn’t known and practiced Avalokiteshvara visualization, it is necessary to remember the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha and the Great Compassion Avalokiteshvara. Pray with your sincere devotion. Recall the image of your Guru and your Dharma name. Keep in mind that those frightening sceneries were created by the Avalokiteshvara who is the Great Compassion one”. It means with the natural magical powers granted in the intermediate existence, Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners turn their thoughts into reality.

This explains why Mat Tu’s friend could not make an escape although she did take refuge into the Three Jewels and recite Mani mantra, because she does not have a Guru who is the spiritual delivery link that directly connecting the disciple to the pure sublime realm of Avalokiteshvara (which also means the realm of the Buddha and the saints).

Dear disciples,

It is said that maintaining right views in the intermediate existence is nine times more difficult than in the state of dreaming. So what should we do to solve it? The only secret stays in this sentence :“Once self-practice is enhanced, blessing support is automated”. In the practice aspect, it is the easiest to remember Asvaghosa’s teaching in “Fifty verses of Guru Devotion” that “Guru devotion is the foundation of the Graded path”. In emergent situations, people find it easier to react their body, speech and mind towards those objects that they found familiar in their history. In that case, Guru is closer to them than Avalokiteshvara, the teaching of Guru is more important than the sutra, and the Guru is the representative of the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha.

Guru devotion is the foundation of the Graded path

These are a few words for your further understanding. I would recommend you all to keep in mind and follow. May all sentient beings keep the state of being awakening in their dream.

Phuoc Thanh Village, 09 May 2014.

    Dear Holy Guru,
I’m so amazed by this wonderful article. I bow my head to your wisdom, generosity and Bodhicitta. I have understood practicing your beneficial and effective methods not only help us to earn merit but also help us to build it into the conditional reflexes which keep us stay awake and practice Dharma easily even in the stage of dreaming or lost in mind. If we are in emergency situation, we will not have time or mind to redraw the whole image of Avalokiteshvara, we will think of the closest one who can recuse us which is Guru, and Guru is the spiritual delivery link which connect disciples to the Avalokiteshvara. Guru has a magical power which help to reveal our Buddha nature, the natural purity and connect us to the realms of Buddha and saints. Guru devotion is the foundation of the Graded path.

May Guru have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings
    .
May the Covid-19 pandemic will end soon.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

    Dear Holy Guru,
I have never made the connection between dream state and awakened state and what it means to Dharma practice. When I first started reading your articles and lessons, I often was plagued with nightmares. I never gave much thought to these nightmares growing less and less common until now. When I sleep I am at peace now. I have a growing heart in Dharma and Have faith in the teachings you provide me. You are my gate keeper to enlightenment and have helped me to vanish the nightmares in my dreams as well as help me to try to overcome my nightmares in reality. I thank you guru for your devotion to Buddhism and teaching sentient beings and disciples the path to liberation. May you be well and live long for sake of all sentient beings to continue to learn and have the opportunity to grow as Buddhists.
