MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS THROUGH PRISM OF THANH TRI YOGA: FROM FUNDAMENTAL NEEDS TO ENJOYMENT OF WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURE (THÁP NHU CẦU MASLOW QUA LĂNG KÍNH TÂM PHÁP THANH TRÍ (từ thọ dụng đến thọ lạc và thọ pháp))

We’ve come back to Saigon after our trip with Guru and dharma brothers to the “land of thousands of flowers” – Da Lat City.

The spring 2020 has laid so many impressions on our mind: got permission of Guru to attend the international conference at Song Nguyen Tantra House, joined the early spring trip to Da Lat City which is entirely funded by Guru, listened to beneficial sermons from Guru, etc.

Participated in International Conference: “Spring Opening for Mind” at Central Song Nguyen Tantra House

Guru also presented us a couple of lotus-print café cups with a white line “Song Nguyen Tantra House”. For us, they are unique! Now, enjoying coffee together in these cups every morning, Mat Tinh Nhu and I feel joyful and grateful toward our Guru! Before taking a sip of coffee, I often silently thank Guru and pray for all sentient beings to drink the nectar essence! I think about unequaled benefits of the practice named “ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURE” that Guru has introduced. This really is a sublime, unconceivable practice!

Couple of unique cups printed with “Song Nguyen Tantra House” bestowed by Guru

With my limited knowledge, I would like to present some thoughts in a bid to help new readers of chanhtuduy.com to understand about this sublime practice.

In business administration program of economics universities in the world, almost all students have to learn such subjects as: business psychology, organizational behavior management, human resource management, marketing,…, in which the “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” is mentioned.

In 1943, the psychologist Abraham Maslow introduced the “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” which is seen one of most important theories in business administration. This theory has a very large impact because it is amazingly applicable in many fields.

The hierarchy of needs is formed by five tiers which depict the human needs as hierarchical levels, as follows:

– First tier: Basic physiological needs: food, water, shelter, sex, secretion, air.

– Second tier: Safety: protection from danger, job security, security for family, health and assets.

– Third tier: The need to experience friendship and love, to be part of a group or a community

– Fourth tier: Esteem: the need to be respected and trusted

– Fifth tier: Self-actualization: the need to do creativity, the desire for personal growth and fulfillment.

Later in 1970 and 1990, Maslow had re-adjusted the hierarchy into 7 and 8 levels correspondently which include: basic psychological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, cognitive needs, aesthetic needs, self-actualization, and transcendence. However, the basic Maslow’s hierarchy of five tiers is still accepted and used widely (Sourcevi.wikipedia.org).

Through the prism of Dharma, the “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” can be categorized as follows: the first tier and part of the second one are “gross elements” while part of the second tier and the third-fourth-fifth tiers are related to “subtle elements”. Hence, the “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” does not mention about the “pure secret essence”. It’s understandable as few of over 7 billion people on this earth can understand the profound meaning of and practice the Buddha Dharma!

Looking at “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” through the prism of “feeling” or “sensation”, we can see the human’s “sensation” circulates in the following process: FUNDAMENTAL NEEDS ——-> ENJOYMENT OF WORLDLY PLEASURES.

“Fundamental needs” are related to “gross elements” while “enjoyment of worldly pleasures” belongs to “subtle elements’.

Ordinary people do not have “enjoyment of Dharma practice” because they do not practice Buddha Dharma. Even if they have, still they can’t have a true “enjoyment of Dharma practice” without acquiring guidance from a kalyanamitra (right teachings but wrong methods).

Unfortunately, if people just have “fundamental needs” and “enjoyment of worldly pleasures” without going together with “enjoyment of Dharma practice”, their actions of body-speech-mind will easily derail the right track of Liberation because their:

– “Body”: “receive fundamental needs”

-“Speech”: easily says wrong words (while “receive fundamental needs”): idletalk, false speech, harsh speech, divisive speech, double-tongued speech

-“Mind”: falls into wrong thought

When people fall into “wrong speech” and “wrong thought”, their blessings will gradually erode, i.e they are “using blessings” (or “using capital” as in financial investment) without further generating “source of blessings” (source of capital)“Using capital” without generating “source of capital” will lead to the exhaustion of “capital” someday and push the business to the edge of bankruptcy.

“ENJOYMENT – JOYFUL DHARMA PRACTICE”, “ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURE”

Blissfully, in Song Nguyen Tantra House, under the guidance of reverend Guru, we have such mottos as: “ENJOYMENT – JOYFUL DHARMA PRACTICE”, “ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURE”. These two mottos share the same meaning: “enjoyment” refers to “enjoy worldly pleasures” while “joyful Dharma practice” means “enjoy Dharma pleasure”. Hence, the feeling or sensation of Thanh Tri practitioners will include “three-in-one” (receive fundamental needs, enjoy worldly pleasures, enjoy Dharma pleasure). We “ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURE” by:

– “Body”: receives fundamental needs

– “Speech”: says Right words, feels joyful with good deeds of sentient beings, pray when receive fundamental needs: “May all sentient beings enjoy the food of meditation”, “May all sentient beings enjoy the nectar essence”, etc.

– “Mind”: revolves around the axis of Guru-Buddha-Dharma-Sangha

Mind revolves around the axis of Guru-Buddha-Dharma-Sangha

Thanks to “Right speech” and “Right thought” during enjoyment of worldly pleasures (not to mention other “rights” in the Noble eightfold path), the practitioner will never lose blessings. Moreover, “ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURE” will help the practitioner generate the “source of capital” since each time he “enjoys Dharma pleasure”, he can obtain more merits which also include blessings. Therefore, Thanh Tri practitioners need not worry about the “exhaustion” (of blessings) whenever enjoying worldly pleasures but contrarily, become more “prosperous and rich”.

“ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURES”

It should be made clear that most mundane people just “receive fundamental needs” while few reaches the level of “enjoy worldly pleasures”, let alone “enjoy wonderful Dharma pleasure”. Why so? Every human need fulfill “fundamental needs” to maintain their life (1st tier – Maslow’s hierarchy of needs). Only when the human reach higher levels (2nd-3rd-4th-5thtiers, depend on each individual) to satisfy their “ego”, then will they “enjoy worldly pleasures” (because the “enjoyment of worldly pleasures” is concerned with the “state of mind” of each individual). In the meantime, “greed is bottomless”, so till when will they fully satisfy their needs?

In Song Nguyen Tantra House, meanwhile, Thanh Tri practitioners can “get things done smoothly and successfully thanks to practicing Dharma”, especially obtaining smooth transformation of mind – the most wonderful achievement.

“Members of Song Nguyen Tantra House may be poor but not agonized”

I’m particularly interested in Guru’s teaching: “Members of Song Nguyen Tantra House may be poor but not agonized”. That’s true! Members of Song Nguyen Tantra House may be “poor” in material life but super rich in spirit, especially in “seven holy treasures” (confidence, virtue, learning, self-effacement, sense of shame, sense of fear and right understanding), thus they are not “agonized” or “suffer” for their mind having been gradually transformed.

After all, “suffering” originates from mind (“all dharmas are created by mind”). Nonetheless, as the practitioner absorbs the exquisite meaning of Buddha’s teachings, as they always contemplate: “Never consider things as failures” or “Blessing or downfall is all the blessings from Yidam”, they no longer blame themselves or feel sorrowful, a sort of suffering. Without “suffering”, they can leisurely “get basic needs” which also means “enjoy worldly pleasures” along with “dharma pleasures.”

Hence, an action of “receive fundamental needs” can turn out different outcomes from different ways of thinking.

Being Thanh Tri practitioners and disciples of honorable Guru, we are considered a man of integrity (君子), as Confucius once said: “A man of integrity gets along with others but does not necessarily agree with them. A morally inferior man may agree with others but do not get along with them” (The Analects of Confucius). This means we get along with others but still keep “our own identity”. We travel (body) by our own car, have food and drink at restaurant, stay in hotel… as others do but our “speech and mind” are not the same. Just like dharma brother Mat Kien has concluded in a version: “Enjoy worldly pleasures but don’t be lost in pleasures. Renounce worldly life inwardly but not outwardly”. Guru also has a version of wonderful meaning: “Enjoy worldly pleasures without attachment. Surrounded by five poisons but not being lured by them”.

“Enjoy worldly pleasures but don’t be lost in pleasures. Renounce worldly life inwardly but not outwardly Enjoy worldly pleasures without attachment. Surrounded by five poisons but not being lured by them”.

Dear Guru!

Above are some of my thoughts about the practice: “ENJOY WORLDLY PLEASURES ALONG WITH DHARMA PLEASURES” that you’ve invented. If my thought is out of the orbit of Dharma, may I purify my bad deeds and be the “second noble person”. I bow at your lotus feet!

I bow at your lotus feet!

Let me praise the vast Bodhicitta and virtue of Guru, who has invented wonderful, simple but quintessential mind dharmas which help us accrue “Merits and Wisdom” to soon “gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate Bodhi Svaha)!

May Guru and your consort have health, live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May Corona epidemic soon be eradicated.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

OM MANI PADME HUM

I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

Dear Dharma brother Mat Ring Glac,

I am highly delighted to read the golden words of the great philosopher Confucius:

” A man of integrity gets along with others but not necessarily agrees with them. A morally inferior man may agree with others but do not get along with them.”

(Analets of Confucius). My position is like this.

I recall an event in the life of Buddha in this

Juncture. King shuddodhana , father of Siddhartha (Buddha) constructed 3 palaces for him to dwelling  in three seasons and arranged to live a luxurious life by appointing  many young and beautiful  ladies  to look after him in those palaces  so that he should not change his mood to become a saint as told by a  Rajguru Foreteller. But what Buddha did ?  He sacrificed and Renounced all these worldly pleasures and went in search of dharma pleasure ( spiritual ) as he knew these worldly pleasures in the long run cause suffering!. Otherwise, he could have enjoyed dharma pleasure along with worldly pleasures as a king!. Then where is the value for Renunciation which is said to be one of the steps in the path of Enlighten ment?

” Maslow’s Hierarchy needs” theory may not help and significant in Spiritual field and Dharma practitioners. It may be applicable and significant in business administration and management as for as my little knowledge is concerned. As said by the great Scientist Einstein,” where the scientific reasoning ends, the philosophy begins “.

As I think,  as also many times Guruji has mentioned  the Song Nguyen Tantra House is a spiritual industrial project where in the energy of worldly pleasure enjoyment is an input which is churned and processed nicely to come out as the output or byproduct of the spiritual pure energy of Dharma practitioner !Here  meditation is medicine for mind and drugs with blessings of Guruji is medicine for body.!

Another glaring example of Guru Osho’s spiritual organization which flourished and reached it’s zenith very recently a few years back. Guru Osho’s Spiritual talks were excellent and attracted many many disciples all over the globe. But his disciples misused his talks enjoying mixing worldly pleasures in practice , thereby that organization ended in disaster. ! Hence, my sincere vision is to see  the transformation of energy of enjoying worldly pleasure into pure  Dharma pleasure in our daily activities too.! The same money and time spent  may be  devoted to poor and the needy in the form of ” Offerings” in order to promote ” Dana ” which is one of the precepts of Buddhism.

I wish to attend one the international dharma conference,

“Enjoy worldly pleasure along with Dhama pleasure” that you have invented.

May guru live long and have good health for the sake of beings.

May beings be free from suffering.

Dear Saint GURU: I duck my head at the feet of the Lotus of the Holy Guru. Wise words of Confucius … An integral man gets along with others, but does not necessarily agree with them. A morally inferior man may agree with them but does not get along with them. Regarding the article of the Song Nguyen Tnatra House under the guidance of the Holy Guru. Enjoy the worldly pleasures along with the pleasure of the Dharma. We can enjoy the worldly pleasures while practicing the sacred Dharma. Therefore, practitioners will include their fundamental needs taking into account the correct Speech and thoughts during the enjoyment of the worldly pleasures. . Enjoy worldly pleasures but don’t get lost in them. Renounce worldly life but internally but not externally. Enjoy worldly pleasures without attachment. Surrounded by five poisons but without being attracted to them. May the Guru live a long time for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all beings free themselves from suffering … and may the Bodhichita be born in them … OM MANI PADME HUM
