MEMORABLE AND FORGETTABLE (Đáng nhớ và đáng quên)

MEMORABLE AND FORGETTABLE (Đáng nhớ và đáng quên)

In life, there are many things we should forget, such as forgetting the mistakes of others when they have sincerely corrected themselves. We should forget the bitterness in the past because whatever the past was, it has gone as the Buddha’ teaching in the sutra on Knowing a Better Way to Live Alone it goes “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”  However, there are some things we should remember and keep in mind. The United Nations has recognized internationally the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spirituality of humanity. Christmas Day is full of colorful lights every year. Teacher’s Day is welcomed with many kinds of flowers in the school yard. Children’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and is also known as the International Day for Protection of Children. National Doctors’ Day is a day celebrated to recognize the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities. Journalist Day is a day of remembrance for those journalists who have sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of lively and meaningful articles with the true values of humanity. Such celebrations are in honor of those who have made the contribution to our society. It is a chance for us to appreciate their efforts; to thank them for what they have done and to understand them more.

On the occasion of having a conversation with Guru, I learned that on the day of Vietnamese journalists on June 21, Guru has sent flowers to celebrate the journalists in Ho Chi Minh City’s police newspaper, where he worked 15 years ago, and he earned his living by fees for his articles. I asked him

–         Guru, did they remember you when you sent flowers to them? 15 years is a long time for everyone to remember something or someone.

The teacher immediately taught:

–         I do not need them to remember me; I just need to remember them. I am grateful, I remember the person who helped me. That is enough.

The call has ended for a long time but his words still remain in my mind. There was something choked in my throat, the space in front of me seemed to blur with tears. Guru is now the Founder of Pure Mind Yoga, the Director of Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Research and Yoga Applications. He is living a comfortable life in a wonderland Tantra House. His disciples and learners are all over the world. But he never forgets to repay the kindness of all beings from the smallest thing like the people who worked with him when he made a paycheck for Ho Chi Minh City’s police newspaper.

Guru is now the Founder of Pure Mind Yoga, the Director of Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Research and Yoga Applications.

Guru has helped many sentient beings to be free from suffering, attain true happiness. He has helped many bitter lives to taste the sweet of happiness, success and glory. I am sure that everyone does not want to think about the sad past time of being jobless and miserable and they never want to return to “the old time”. In fierce battles with evil spirits and evil powers, Guru is ready to fight with them. He has been sacrificing everything he has had to keep the peace and happiness for all followers. He is happy to help them to escape from the bondage of slaves, from ignorance and from wrong views. Even in the battle with poverty, Guru has tried his best to support learners and disciples with the effective methods, skillful means and pure money in order that his followers can accumulate wisdom and merit for worldly success and spiritual achievements. Guru has been making financial support to save learners’ lives at the most critical time. I believe that we all have been getting countless blessings and much support from Guru, from material life to mental life; especially we have received the wonderful spiritual gift from his six marvelous spiritual practices. If with so much at stake, Guru kept hesitantly helping us, how can we be as leisurely and happy as we are today? Guru is ready to sacrifice his life for his followers, let alone other things.

And yet, a disciple like me almost forgets the most sacred day of the Vajrayana practitioner, Guru’s day, on June 30th this year. It’s a shame for someone like me when always saying that we proudly follow his footsteps but not knowing how to truly appreciate the grace of the Guru. Today, it is also fortunate for me to have a chance to call him and listen to his story. From his bright example, I learn again the basic lesson of a Buddhist “being grateful and repaying the other’s kindness” in which the Buddha taught in the Anguttara Nikaya. It was that “if there are any sentient beings being gratitude, they are respectful. Small gratitude they do not forget; let alone a big one. Such grateful beings are very far from me though they are considered to be close to me. I often praise such beings. On the contrary, the sentient beings do not repay the other’s kindness, the big gratitude they do not remember, let alone the small one. Such ungrateful beings are close to me, even though they wear a robe and stand next to me, on the left side or on the right side, they are still very far from me.” Even the Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava, an enlightened being, always remembered the great gratitude to Gurus. He said in verse:
“You should know that the master is more important

Than the buddhas of a hundred thousand aeons,

Because all the buddhas of the aeons

Appeared through following masters.

There will never be any buddhas

Who have not followed a master.

The master is the Buddha, the master is the Dharma.

Likewise the master is also the Sangha.

He is the embodiment of all buddhas.

He is the nature of Vajradhara.

He is the root of the Three Jewels.” (a quote from Dakini Teaching)

Many teachers celebrate their birthdays at the temple, in the monastery and wait for their students to come to congratulate. Many monks still ask their followers to make a funeral anniversary for their parents etc. On the contrary, on 30th June, Guru keeps driving on his long distance trip to convert all sentient beings. He is continuously doing the Bodhi activities to spread the light of right view, erasing the dark night of samsaric suffering and bring the fresh and happy spring to all sentient beings. While we are at home, enjoying the cozy house, sleeping in the soft cushion, Guru is still joining his “ten thousand mile” trip on the roads with potential obstacles and gives us the taste of liberation with many precious lessons “Dharma is life, life is Dharma”, increasing the following’s faith in Buddha’s teaching, providing the good opportunity for us to accumulate the wisdom and merit for our worldly success and spiritual achievements.

Guru is still joining his “ten thousand mile” trip on the roads with potential obstacles and gives us the taste of liberation with many precious lessons “Dharma is life, life is Dharma”

However, his “ten thousand mile shoes” are not among the luxurious cars like Audi, BMW, Lexus, VinFast Lux A2.0 or Range Rover or other expensive cars. Guru has sacrificed his life for upholding the dharma, travelling thousands of miles without worrying the potential dangers along the trip, which may have a bad effect on his health and body. He still keeps silently bearing the burden of his physical dangers. He accepts every challenge without hesitation to support all sentient beings with his middle-class car. Moreover, the street food with insufficient hygiene may seriously affect his health and many other dangerous things may happen on his trip. Yet Guru sacrifices everything as he has been doing to bring happiness to all followers and all beings.

Thus, on the Guru’s Day, we are grateful to Guru and repay his kindness in the spirit of a Buddha’s child, we will have the opportunity to accumulate the “double” merit. We are making offerings to the Guru, who is respectful and paid homage by the Buddhas in ten directions at the three times, to express the gratitude to the Guru and making offerings while Guru is making the Dharma activities. What an immeasurable merit! The benefits still belong to us and the arduousness and hardship are still along with Guru.

Dear holy Guru!

On the occasion of Guru’s day, I, Mat Dieu Hang, sincerely thank Guru for your compassionate teaching and always giving me many skillful means to accumulate wisdom and merit for liberation from suffering and attaining true happiness. I bow my head on your lotus feet to pay homage to Guru.

I sincerely pray for Guru’s health and longevity for propagating Dharma.

May all beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May covid 19 pandemic come to an end soon.

Om Mani Padme Hum.

Your disciple – Mat Dieu Hang

  11. Tena says:

Dear Guru, Thank you for leading me on a different path. When first read your writing,  I knew absolutely nothing. My mind was busy asking all the wrong questions. You have given me a new focus and more clarity. I was confused by all of the deities and beings that people on the internet would post. Worst of all, I was confused by the thoughts and expectations of my every day life. My response must truly be a response, and not a reaction.

Thank you, too, to Mat Dieu Hang for your letter expressing your own gratitude to Guru. You have opened my eyes a bit.

  12. Tantra Sutradaka says:

    Reverend Guru
    Om Mani Padme Hum
I bow before your lotus feet
I woke up in the morning a little bit late. I was not feeling well as yesterday evening I slipped in my flat because of the water on the floor. I fall down with a big thud and my son-in-law came to lift me but I stopped him as these days I have started to depend on Guru’ grace. I was hopeful that nothing wrong will happen to me. I got up myself. Today morning the pain did not allow me to to get up early and I dropped my morning walk too. However, good news was awaiting me. As per habit after having a cup of tea I gave a glance on the messenger and found my friend’s iconic face smiling I opened it. Her beautiful long article was shared on the Chanthu dui .com. It is very pleasant to read it as it is saturated with the reverence for a compassionate Guru who serves night and day for the benefit of his disciple. It compelled me to ponder over the issue to remember that for last three years what I received and what lost in the spiritual journey along with our holy Guru who lives for his disciples, longs for his disciples and struggles with the problems of the disciples, so that they may not feel any sort of problem in life. I could not remain non-enchanted from the emotional flow of reverential love for our Guru. It is the height of evolution of the devotion for the Guru and his benefaction in the life of a disciple which has expressed in this article as the emotional outcome of a devotee.
This article is also reminder to the fact that the basic teaching and preaching of the Buddha is being lived today as our Holy Guru has also carried out his tour for our pleasure both mundane and supra-mundane. Buddha made various tours for 45 years and preached the people out of compassion. The same spirit is found in the benevolent travel of Guru for his disciples that culminated in the Hanoi summit. Many of his devoted disciples assembled there to listen to him. It is the climax of his compassion that even in his old age he is pertaining physical and mental exertion for his disciples. We are fortunate to meet and spiritually connected to him as his helping hand is always for the protection of his disciples whether they are old and new.
I am thankful for this article, I am grateful for her affection for her Dhamma friend that she shared it to me, I am thankful to the Guru for sharing it for his disciples.
    Om Mani Padme Hum
May all sentient beings may attain the Bodhichitta and have the Buddha food.
May the pandemic COVID 19 evaporate from this globe.
May our holy Guru long live along with his consort for our happiness and pleasure, both mundane and spiritual.

Dear Dharma brother Mat Dieu Hang,

I’m so moved to read your article. I’m inspired by Guru’s gratefulness to Hochiminh Police newspaper where he worked before. I am so sympathetic to your feeling and I feel ashamed about myself too. I have received lot of from Guru, a new me, new positive eyes and true happiness but I almost forgot the most important day, Guru’s day. Guru has sacrificed and dedicated his life, wisdom, Bodhicitta to help sentient beings to be free from suffering and attain true happiness. While monks in temple or monastery brag and flaunt as great pomp to polish themselves on Guru day, our holy Guru is driving alone across the country, struggling with many risks in order to continuously do Bodhi activities, to spread the right view and help more and more sentient beings. I can’t thank enough for what he has done and is doing for us, his disciples and learners. Thanks Mat Dieu Hang for sharing this article. May you have good health and attain all the righteous wishes.

    Dear Holy Guru,

On the occasion of Guru’s day, I would like to express my gratitude to you for your compassionate and đeication, for helping us, your disciples and all sentient beings. I bow my head on your lotus feet. May myself and Dharma brothers always obey Guru, nurture devotion toward Guru as the Dharma orbit.

I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Covid-19 pandemic will eliminate soon.
