
Nowadays, most of Buddhists hear the terminology of “mantra”. Each Buddha and Bodhisattva is composed their own mantras depending on their own vows. Among of those, OM MAMI PADME HUM is often heard. It is called Mani mantra or six syllable mantra. Tibetan practitioners read it “Ommani peme hung”. Vietnamese Buddhists read it in Sino-Nom “Án ma ni bát di hồng”. Although each countries has their own ways of reading Mani mantra, all people know Mani mantra composed by the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Perhaps, Tibetan people are more familiar with this mantra. In Tibet, the child at the age of learning to speak starts reading this mantra “Ommani padme hum”. The adults not only always read this mantra, they also engrave this mantra in the rocks, the trees, on the wall as well as make the mantra wheel.
