Praying (Part 8): SELF – HELP PRACTICE AND DIVINITY SUPPORT – A SYNCHRONICITY CONNECTION (Tự lực hành pháp, tha lực hộ trì, nhân quả tương ưng)

Praying (Part 8): SELF – HELP PRACTICE AND DIVINITY SUPPORT – A SYNCHRONICITY CONNECTION

It is said that audible prayer with any content is a kind of self-help practice since the devotee can express his very own thought. This is a kind of direct praying to the Guru and Yidam, quite different from Catholics who often pray to the priest who will be then responsible for transferring this prayer to God.

Mat Nga prays during the practice of Dharma in Song Nguyen Tantric House – Vung Tau Branch

Upon praying, a Tantric practitioner will gradually have his wisdom developed from getting used to ways of expression. Through this practice, he can develop the ability of conversation skill – the first step of Dharma expounding activity in the future. Through prayer, practitioner expresses his fervent devotion to the Guru, Yidam and his true feeling towards sentient beings and outside situation (disasters, epidemics). Unlike sitting meditation, bowing, offering, listening to Dharma, sutra hand-copying, Buddha’s name chanting, and mantra recitation which may evoke a rise of delusion as the practitioner’s mind is in passive state, the action of praying will help him activate and promote at maximum his wisdom to express his thoughts in audible words. The practitioner will never or rarely have his mind been disctracted. Therefore, praying becomes a self-help practice, a kind of Vipassana and the best connection between the devotee and the Yidam through a tranmission channel (the Guru). The practitioner will then gradually transit from developed wisdom to early awakened state which means from a wisdom attained with a teacher to self-attained wisdom.

HH. Dalai Lama is praying for earthquake victims in Tibet

When someone is doing meditation, hardly could he follow the development of his mind and wisdom. However, by praying with audible words, it’s easy to realize the spiritual inner force of a practitioner (as a way illustrated for Guru devotion, feelings for sentient beings, environment). After all, praying is the way to show his fervent aspiration to generate Bodhicitta.

Practitioners in Song Nguyen Tantric House always pray during each session of Dharma practice. The length of prayer depends on their spiritual level and it may last from five minutes up to one hour. Obviously they recite audible prayer, not kind of silent praying which easily gets them distracted. It is said that a Tantric Master may spend hours praying at a grand ceremony, assembly or Dharma project with standard words.

praying with his spiritual Guru in a session of Dharma practice

A prayer sent from the bottom of his heart could be seen as a way of self-help practice which will definitely get blessed from the Buddha. This is the fact that has been proved by lots of comments of Song Nguyen’s members through 238 articles on chanhtuduy.com. Any prayer of the practitioner will receive blessing from the Yidam but his achievement coming slow or fast or appearing in which form depends on his spiritual level. The sole cause for achievement is the belief in Guru and Yidam. Therefore, those who have broken Tantric Vow No.1 will be less likely to achieve from praying, unless they recover Tantric vows.

Song Nguyen Tantric House has been using a praying text as follows:

1/ Opening is the expression of gratefulness to Yidam, Master, Dakini through transmission channel of the Guru who bestowed blessings upon practitioners in the past ( may be yesterday, last week, month or year…). He shows his absolute faith in the subject of the prayer. When we believe, we get countless merits as the Buddha taught:” Faith is mother of all kinds of blessing. When we believe, we accumulate the very first of seven noble treasures – the faith – (seven noble treasures include faith, morality, contemplation, modesty, having a sense of being ashamed of oneself, having a sense of dishonor, wisdom).

2/ Praying to do penance for wrong doings which means the practitioner can perform the 31st practice of Bodhisattva taught by Thogme Zangpo as well as one of ten virtuous vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Once we  do penance, we would definitely purify bad karmas.

3/ Praying to petition the Yidam, Guru, Dakini, through the spiritual Master as the transmission channel, for dispelling existing obstacles and granting us blessings. We contemplate the Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha while praying, which can help us maintain a composure through any happening in daily life.

4/ Praying for sentient beings and the world, for the long-lasting and disaster-free existence of Vietnam, the happiness of Vietnamese people. This aims to show gratefulness to good graces we’ve obtained from the Nation, Parents and Almsgivers. Hence, the practitioner becomes one of three kinds of hardly met person as taught by the Buddha in “Three Kinds of Hardly Met Persons” sutra. Doing this prayer also means practicing the quintessence of Mahayana – Bodhicitta aspiration. Once we pray for sentient beings and the world, then we can root up our selfishness.

5/ Praying for the longevity of saints, authentic gurus and particularly our spiritual Master will help us gain stronger health and a life longer than the one programmed by the Principle of Causality in previous life.

From these points on, we realize that praying is not simply an ordinary way of petition like burning incenses at pagoda to ask for oneself’s health and prosperity, but more than that, it measures the spiritual level of the Buddhist practitioner, particularly the Tantric one. I would end this article by the saying of Dilgo Khyentse:” Praying to the Guru is the kernel of the sadhana while merging your mind with the Guru’s is the essence of cultivation.”

  7. Dr.C H Lakshmi narayan says:
Respected Guruji, I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

    I am Tantra Nirvadeva.

    Hindus pray Gods !

Chrstians pray God ( Jesus) !

    Muslims pray Allah !

Buddhists too pray  Yidam, Dakini, Gurus and Buddha !  Etc.

So, ” Prayer ” is a common factor NBC’s in almost all Religions desiring for the welfare of all sentient beings and humanity. !

The benefits and advantages of such a Prayer are highlighted at length in all the Religions including Buddhism.

Yet, the great Gotham Buddha did only Meditation, sitting under a sacred Banyon tree day and night till he got the knowledge of wisdom and Enlightenment ! There is no single instance of Buddha  offering Prayer to any gods  Gurus  Yidam and Dakini etc. !

Does it mean the importance of superiority of MEDITATION over Prayer ? Is it the enlightening  difference between Buddhism and other Religions ?

Does it emphasizes the saying of the Great Master Dilgo Khyentse, ”  Praying the Guru (PRAYER) is the kernel of the Sadhana while merging your mind ( MEDITATION) with the Guru’s is essence of cultivation.!

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Long live our Guruji for upholding Dharma.

  8. Tantramikaya ( Jane) says:
dear holy guru. Thank you very much for your great article. For me, it is very instructive and interesting to learn how the precious sangha prays and the components of your prayers that are now clearer and more understandable to me. I know We students should visualize Yidam in our meditative exercises to identify with them. They serve as help in our transformation process of Tantra. In order to experience the purity of all things, we need to understand that on a relative level, things appear to be of different conditions, and in interdependence, in the final analysis, they are not truly existent. The two things are not separated. It is not the mere appearance of things that makes the confusion, but the way we refer or cling to it. By purifying our minds and daily meditation and recitation we can achieve a transformation. I thank you holy Guru for your extraordinarily instructive article and the explanation of the prayers and their meaning. May be happy and succesful on the path of enlightment. May our holy guru live long and happy for the sake of all beings. May all beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature. HAPPY NEW YEAR OM MANI PADME HUM. OM MANI PADME HUM. OM MANI PADME HUM

May the Holy Guru have good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha ‘s nature.
