About the Real of Demons

Lesson 9: Need to determine by right view

In lesson 8, you read that this is the story of demonic expulsion according to folk beliefs of different ethnic groups. Each culture has its own real of demon shades, but these concepts have not displayed Buddhist right view yet; therefore it’s not feasible.

Lesson 8 mentioned about how to “free the door of the demon” in Japan, the Japanese claim that the demon is going through Northeast, so what they are trying to fight is related to this direction. This is unreasonable because the devil has “the supernatural power to be anywhere as they want” so they can come and leave in all directions. They also used Sanskrit charms pasted in the north-east corner of the house, a way of exterminating spiritual entities under influence of Chinese masters, who used to practice Chinese tantric and spread through this country in the 11th century, it’s called as East Tantric.

Need to determine by right view

Filipinos built the “exit for the demon” is more absurd because demons are metaphysical, in and out without obstacles, so what to build for? The construction of stairs in the way of counting “oro, plata, mata”, like the concept of counting according to “birth, aging, disease, death, birth …” is currently popular in Vietnam, is still superstition, no spiritual science foundation.

Thai people build a “ghost house” for the demon stay to avoid being disturbed because demon has no place to live, is an incredible folk concept. The karma of demon is destructive, harming, harming and jealousy. Demon does not stay at houses built by human, they only temporarily shelter in the wilderness, cemeteries, ponds, turbid water. Due to the unstability of the demons’ wisdom foundation, they often appear to be indeterminate, abnormal, and “build” houses for them are unrealistic. Particularly the type of high-class demon often shelter their temples built in the air, of course they do not stay in the houses built by human, which are small and lacking in amenities compared to their “demon-merit”.

Chinese build houses, pagodas and shrines with curved arch roofs against the invading demons. However be aware, this is not a Buddhist concept, it is just a folk religion. The scriptures have never confirmed that the demon flies in a straight line and is afraid of the curved line as the Chinese fabricated. Once they have “the supernatural power to be anywhere as they want”, of course, they can fly by mind (thoughts), not by physical body depending on straight line or curve.

Avalokiteshvara

Westerners, South America people believe that painting blue door will make it look like water and it will be able to cheat demon because demon can’t go through water (!). This is unreasonable because Buddhist scriptures assert that demons have no karma see water, when they look at water, they will see blood. And the deva see water as crystal; dragons, fish look water as housing, only human see water as a drink. Due to starting point was wrong, so everything went wrong.

Hanging the flute at the door instead of the sword to expulse demon is wrong way because the demons are metaphysical, how can they be blocked and expulsed by tangible objects?

Impossible to say that the concept of guardian statues, such as the Mahakala of Tibetan and the image of two Chinese gods, Than Do and Du Loi, having anti-demons effect is accurate, especially when it says that placing those statues at altar. If there is a place for the worship of the Buddha, the Bodhisattva, the Holy Masters, then there is no need to guard. And people who do not worship Buddha, Bodhisattva, Holy Masters, hanging pictures or placing statues is not able to against to demon because pictures or statues are just normal unmovable objects.

In addition, the items, plants such as laurel leaves, coins, garlic … are all folk beliefs. This is just psychotherapy, not spiritual therapy. Many temples use psychological therapy to reassure layman, controlling them, and without basis of Bodhicitta, it will be wrong view.

According to Buddhist doctrine, all the traditions, habits, and long-standing traditions handed down in each nation, in different countries, are not apply the mind skillfully (or wise It is thinking in terms of causal relations), it is unwise attention. It is called as traditional ignorance.

The Buddhist practitioners take the wisdom as a primary, so should not follow what related to ignorance. Otherwise, we will fall into the wrong view. It is not by chance that the Buddha taught the path to liberation through the Noble Eightfold Path, placing right view at the top. In the 18 main chapters of the 64 Bodhicitta Vows, the 9th is the “wrong view, if the Tantric practitioner commits this error, and the 18th “Degradation of Bodhicitta”, belonging to main vows, it is difficult to repent, but it seems to be destroying the work of cultivation of Vajrayana.

the Buddha’s teaching to help us keep the right view of enlightenment, avoiding the traditional ignorance disturbing faith to the dharma

To end this article, I cite the Buddha’s teaching to help us keep the right view of enlightenment, avoiding the traditional ignorance disturbing faith to the dharma:

“Do not accept anything on mere hearsay. Do not accept anything by mere tradition. Do not accept anything on account of rumors. Do not accept anything just because it accords with your scriptures. Do not accept anything by mere supposition. Do not accept anything thinking that the ascetic is respected by us. But when you know for yourselves – these things are moral, these things are blameless, these things are praised by the wise, these things, when performed and undertaken, conduce to well-being and happiness – then do you live and act accordingly”

(Quoted from the KALAMA sutra)

So according to the right view of the Buddhism, how do we expel demon? See you in Lesson 10.
