RESEARCH ON PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT OF THANH TRI YOGA ON STRESS AND DEPRESSION ( Chapter I) ( HIỆU QUẢ TÂM LÝ TỪ LIỆU PHÁP YOGA THANH TRÍ (TÂM PHÁP THANH TRÍ) ĐỐI VỚI CĂN BỆNH TRẦM CẢM (CHƯƠNG I))
Chanhtuduy.com: Through survey, research, practice, and application resulting in achievements attained for more than 20 years, our Guru has invented six marvelous spiritual practices benefiting all sentient beings. Recently, our Guru has completed a scientific study titled “Research on Psychological Effect of Thanh Tri Yoga on Stress and Depression.” It is with joy and happiness for the inconceivable benefits for all sentient beings resulting from this research that I, Mat Dieu Hang, as a Secretary of the Science Council, am honored to introduce to you, readers nationwide and worldwide, the brief research report approved by the Science Council of ITA Institute with the agreement of five scientists from Vietnam and other countries.
“Research on Psychological Effect of Thanh Tri Yoga on Stress and Depression” reflects Guru’s wish to help everyone be free from suffering; moreover, it reveals and illustrates Guru’s Bodhichitta mind toward all sentient beings since the establishment of the Song Nguyen Tantra House in 2006 and the Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications in 2018. “Research of the Psychological Effect of Thanh Tri Yoga on Stress and Depression” highlights profound meaning regarding the path of spiritual dialectic science for the sake of the community for which the ITA Institute has been followed for many years.
Expressed in this message here, are my words of sincerity. I would also like to extent thanks to all of our local and international readers for your attention and taking a look.
BRIEF RESEARCH REPORT
Title: “RESEARCH ON PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT OF THANH TRI YOGA (THANH TRI MIND DHARMA) ON STRESS AND DEPRESSION”
Chaper 1. INTRODUCTION
I. RATIONALE
In modern time, exponential growth of science and high technology has brought in remarkable improvement in the standard of living. This, however, accompanied with growing pressures which leads to a dramatic increase in the number of stress and depression patients. According to the “World Health Statistics 2018: Monitoring Health for the SDGs” reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are nearly 800,000 cases of suicide in 2016, among which the age between 25 and 34 represented the highest rate of around 20% with 160,000 persons. It is forecasted that by the year of 2020, stress will rank second after cardiovascular diseases in term of high impact on human life. WHO also reported that over 100 million people are suffering from mental disorders in the Western Pacific region. Depressive disorders alone are responsible for 5.73% of the overall disease burden in this region.

The Ministry of Health said that according to WHO’s 2016 statistics, around 15% of Vietnam’s populations or 13.5 million people were suffering ten popular mental disorders, of which 4% or 3.6 million people experienced depressive disorders. The number of suicide cases was 5,000 in Vietnam and 800,000 in the world. Stress is one of leading causes of suicide.
Currently, the treatment of stress and depression in Vietnam is facing challenges and difficulties. Most of the patients do not realize the signs of stress and depression and get timely treatment. The number of doctors and mental faculties is limited. In the meantime, psychology studies in Vietnam have mainly focused on pathology such as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Posttraumatic Stres Disorder), autism, personality disorder, stress, anxiety, dissociative disorder… while less attention is paid to positive emotion whose terminology is positive psychology which has emerged as one of newest branches of psychology which has connection with this kind of psychology. Besides, the number of psychologists in Vietnam fails to meet the standard both in quantity and quality.
It should be noted that an extreme focus on pathology rather than long-term solutions may result in negative effects.
After a certain period of research and putting in practice, positive psychologists have pointed out that the role of therapists is not merely to ease the patient from pains, afflictions and anxiety… or to prescribe medications for pathological symptoms, but more important is to help their patients develop a state of well-being in body, speech and mind and build it as a preventive mechanism for all potential negative emotions. Some positive emotions can be listed as joy, gratitude, serenity, interest, hope, pride, inspiration, awe, love… . Nonetheless, we realize that among those positive emotion, “compassion” is not paid due attention and put much in practice while it really exists and plays a crucial role in human life. This is the reason why Thanh Tri Yoga (Thanh Tri mind dharma) has been developed at Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications (ITA). This yoga provides in-depth psychological research with an aim of transforming the mind based on flexible applications in daily life.
After years of researching and practicing Thanh Tri Yoga (Thanh Tri mind dharma) which has brought in positive results, I wish to introduce it to others with an aim of helping them enhance their physical, mental and spiritual health in aspects of body, speech and mind. As the founder and director of the Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications, I found it’s necessary to do a research that goes from theory to practice in order to precisely and sufficiently evaluate the effect of Thanh Tri Yoga (Thanh Tri mind dharma) on the treatment of stress and depression in Vietnam as well as in the world.
II. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH
Analyze, evaluate and conclude psychological effects of Thanh Tri Yoga (Thanh Tri mind dharma) on stress and depression.

Thank you so much for this research ! Actually the depression is one of the most complicated disease ! It’s so dangerous ! I really believe that the people who have depression generally and the hard depression specifically suffer a lot. And unfortunately most of them can’t find anyone to support, help and understand their feelings and suffering. The number which you mentioned in this article about the numbers of the human beings who die yearly suicidal is horrible and heartbreaking. I’m so sad because they took a permanent decision based on a temporary feelings, but I really can’t blame them at all. Since I really know when the person decides to commit suicide he doesn’t see anything in front of him at all. And almost all the people who tried to commit suicide always say that we don’t know how we did that ! We were unconscious and the pain and suffering was unbearable. Reading the Rationale, I clearly see the practicality of the research – contributing to addressing the alarming situation of stress and depression which have been seriously affecting comnunity’s health, both nation-wide and worldwide.

I am grateful to read Chapter I of the brief report of the research on psychological effect of Thanh Tri therapy on stress and depression. Statistics of this disease reported in the world and in Vietnam indicate the popularity and serious consequences it is causing to humans and the socio-economy. The birth of Thanh Tri Yoga on the basis of spiritual dialectic science found out by Guru has contributed actively and effectively to the treatment of this disease in a new method – stimulating long-term positive psychology of the patient. It could be said that positive psychology has long been introduced in the world but it seems yet to get appropriate and in-depth attention from psychologists in the treatment of stress and depression. I am glad to know ITA, under Guru’s guidance, is one of the pioneers in employing a positive therapy, named as Thanh Tri Yoga, to help the sentient beings gradually and totally be free from the disease, and at the same time, gain inner happiness and success in life. Mental health disorders are a serious issue all around world and does not discriminate against the young, old, healthy, sick, rich or poor. I do not put complete faith in modern medicine (taking pills) for everyone. Most of this medication causes terrible side effects and sometimes only causes more suffering. I am humbly grateful for your research and for your teachings. After reading your discourses and contemplating on the meaning my days seem to feel brighter as long as I keep up with other daily practices. This has become my medicine and it is an easy pill to swallow, so to speak. As always, I look forward to reading more articles because my mind is the flower and your lessons are the rain.

Dear Guru, Thank you. I was excited to read the beginning of your article. I began an anti-depressant trial two weeks ago, because I felt like crying most of the day. My Buddist friend told me,” If you say you are not copping out, then you probably are.” meaning that I have not tried my smile and meditation enough. I do not know yoga. Maybe this,too, would help. I have read the rationale and research purpose of the Brief Report “Psychological effect of Thanh Tri Yoga on stress and depression”.
With concise expressions and real data, the report has highlighted the urgency and practical value of the research for its effective contribution to the prevention and treatment of depression. In my opinion, the new and innovative feature of this research lies in the approach and problem-solving, which is the root treatment of the cause of the disease (transforming negative mind into positive one) rather than merely solving symptoms or consequences as the current methods in both Vietnam and other countries.
What is even more remarkable is that this vision of therapy has been realized and developed by the Guru more than 20 years ago on the basis of Buddha’s wisdom, at a time when the mental disorders were not even really be properly concerned in social life. I believe that with the development mindset that preceded that era of the Guru, this scientific work will be a great research, marking an important milestone in the development of psychology in particular and the field of medicine in general, since the constant worries and psychological stresses are the root of most physical illnesses in human, not just depression.

In general, also already proved scientifically with the background of biophysics, biochemistry and psycho neurological tests long back that negative emotions and karmas cause bad or negative effects on the body mind and speech of human body and positive emotions or karmas cause good effects on human body mind and speech as told by Buddha. The negative emotions and karmas are the main reasons for stress and depression. For example, if you observe the Ancient Gurus and Masters how they used to be cool, serene and always peaceful as they had no negative emotions at all and always positive minded practicing dharma because they knew as said in VEDA of Hinduism, ” Dharma will always safegaurd him who safeguards Dharma.”
Here, Guruji’s main theme is prevention is better than cure ! Instead of going to approach psychologists after getting stress and depression ,Guruji says, though it is a heart stirring painful statement to psychologists , ” that the number of psychologists in Vietnam fails to meet the standards both in quality and quantity.” It is better to prevent stress and depression by practicing five or six dharma practices which possess positive emotions and scientifically proved to get rid off the stress anxiety and depression , now clubbed and introduced in Thanh Tri Yoga of song Nguyen Tantra House. And also Research team going on to confirm the effect of positive emotions like Compassion, love..Mindful concentration, lotus dharani walking meditation, Samsung dristi prabha samadi as in chanhtuduy.com etc. Guruji is successful in finding and confirming their scientifically proved beneficial effect of preventing the stress and anxiety depression from those six dharma practices introduced in Thanh Tri yoga and highly pleased to share the joy with all of us!. Our duty and obligation is to reciprocate with the joy of his great achievement for the benefit of Mankind with his sky like boundless Bodhichitta.!

Great article/ study so far…anxious to read the rest. Depression and anxiety are prevalent in society and while medications and therapy can help, people do need other options to help them with behavior modification to improve their mental health. Also, we as a society need to learn to talk openly about mental health just as we do physical health and not feel ashamed.

All of your articles are of great help for us. As far as depression is concerned it is serious problem not only of Vietnam and any other country but of the entire world. Medicines are also not providing the sufficient relief. Yoga and meditation are great helpful in removing stress , anxiety and depression. Yoga and and meditation are a great boon of Buddhism to the world. They have given solution of a number of major problems of mankind.

Great guru..I agree with the findings of the study’s on depression. I myself take medicine for anxiety and depression I would love to be able to cure myself and get off this medication. I have learned over the years to curb my emotions. I am on the road to recovery thank you great guru

I bow my head before your lotus feet!! Thank you for sharing “RESEARCH ON PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT OF THANH TRI YOGA ON STRESS AND DEPRESSION (Chapter 1). Just from the small amount of knowledge I have of Thanh Tri Yoga and it’s practice I have been able to transform the way I respond to stress. Anger was always a strong emotion that would manifest from my stress, depression, anxiety, and any insecurities I had. I still get angry sometimes but I have started to notice that by “plugging” myself into Dharma, through reading/commenting on chanhtuduy.com my bouts of anger do not happen as often. Nor do they last as long. I am able to let go of some situations in which I would have not been able to do so previously.
I conclude that while I am nowhere near proficient in the practice and application of Thanh Tri Yoga, it’s methods do work and with diligent practice and patience it’s effects will magnify. I believe this is the best self help “medication” to treat our worldly illness.
