THANH TRI – THE 1ST MIND DHARMA: EIGHT DHARMA METHODS OF TAKING REFUGE IN THE THREE JEWELS (Eight paths leading to the true nature of mind): LESSON 8: INSIGHTS ON KARMA PURIFICATION ( Bài 8 về đệ nhất tâm pháp tức là Bát pháp Quy y (Tám lối về Chân tâm) HIỂU SÂU VỀ TỊNH HÓA NGHIỆP CHƯỚNG)

On 28 September 2020, even though we were four people having dinner together, I was the only one that got food poisoning throughout 8 hours, from last evening until this morning. There is no relevant medical reason that can explain this incident. If the situation was really bad, I should have been exhausted and listless this morning; however, I woke up feeling fresh and energetic as if I have never had food poisoning last night. That’s why I was able to start writing this article.

After 12 hours suffering the pain of having food poisoning, I am healthy and energetic just the day after as if nothing happened which can be seen in this picture. That is the demonstration of purification.

That’s why I was able to start writing this article.

After eliminating all possible reasons that can be the root of the pain, I concluded that it was the natural process of purification. So what is “purification”? In Vajrayana Buddhism, it is taught that ordinary human beings encounter these following situations as a result of karma has been “ripened”: (1) disease (2) nightmare (3) financial loss (4) gossip and/or slander. However, for Buddhist practitioners, these incidents are demonstrations of karmic hindrances purification, which means heavy karma will be decreased to light karma, light karma will accordingly be cleaned completely.

I have experienced purification many times, so does this time. How to recognize disease as a demonstration of purification? It can be recognized when the cause and the effect are not matching. For example, the cause was that we ate street food, and the effect was that I got food poisoning. However, how come I was the only one who had the symptoms? Moreover, I ate the same food two days ago and it was even kept overnight, but nothing happened at that time? It shows the irrelevance between the cause and effect.

How to perceive nightmares as a demonstration of purification? Terrifying scenes that can be seen during the state of dreaming, in which we may be in the middle of chasing or killing scenes, or getting lost in a dangerous and scary place, etc., are bad signals in the dream; however, those are good signals for Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners while practicing Dharma. Instead of being scared to death in reality, the practitioners will only suffer in their dreams. No one regrets losing money which was stolen in a dream.

On the other hand, ordinary people’s nightmares mark the milestone of ripened karma hindrances which were created by their actions of body, speech, mind in their lives. Nightmares were results of the person being repressed, intimidated and pressured, or even depressed in daily life; these stresses are brought into the dream as a consequence of mixed/confused perception. The ones who suffer this situation have no choice but face physical and emotional illnesses.

Financial loss means loss of money or decrease in financial value. For Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners, despite they stay alert (in body, speech, mind) to preserve the property, they are still dominated by unexpected factors which cause inevitable financial loss incidents. For example, they locked the house carefully before leaving but their property was still stolen; they drove car carefully but they were still involved in an accident caused by the others; they have run successful business until a construction site happened to execute in front of their houses; they made huge investment in an outdoor concert, but the weather was extremely bad that day, etc. Understanding the real meaning and demonstration of “financial loss”, Buddhist practitioners won’t be saddened because it is “better lose money than lose one’s life”.

Gossip and/or slander means being notorious for bad reputation by unfounded rumors; one may be blamed, slandered by those who hold hatred, anger, enmity. For ordinary people, gossip and slander may cause serious mental illnesses, which may later become silent murderers. There are so many suicides in the world, especially in the showbiz world in which the victims had suffered from being gossiped or slandered. However, for Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners, this is a means to purify negative karmas which were accumulated in their previous and current lives before they start practicing Dharma.

Then, how should Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners, who are practicing Pure Mind Dharma, perceive the demonstration of “being purified” in the right Dharma track?
Firstly, experiencing karma purification in each of four above mentioned kinds is actually a chance to challenge the practitioners’ faith in harsh circumstances.
Secondly, it is a necessary condition to examine the Buddhist practitioners’ power of mind-control.
Thirdly, it is the demonstration of being blessed by the Three Jewels after practicing Dharma, as if the accumulated merits are so fulfilled that it is overwhelming.
Fourthly, in case of being suffered from disease, we should bear in mind that “Do not desire perfect health. Perfect heath can easily increase one’s greed and arrogance” (The treatise on the King of Treasures Samadhi).
Fifthly, experiencing nightmares is a means to purify karma hindrances from earlier countless lives, as specified in the five functions of reciting mantras.
Sixthly, financial loss is a chance for us to practice renunciation in which we understand it is better to lose money, or property than lose our lives. Moreover, at the time of loss, we are still in good condition and our minds are still alert.
Seventhly, in case of being a victim of gossip and/or slander, we should bear in mind the Buddha’s teaching in Dharmapada Sutra that said “As a solid rock, unshaken by winds. A wise man with a still mind, unshaken by praise and blame”. This is the solution in terms of mind-control aspect. In terms of wisdom, it can be referred to the minor mistakes no.15/46 among Bodhicitta vows that said “Not avoiding bad rumors”.

In short, if we are in debt to others and we are about to leave soon, there must be creditors who come to collect the debt. It is fortunate if the creditors show sympathy and accordingly reduce the debt. Similarly, “in debt” refers to karma hindrances that are accumulated from previous and current lives; practicing Dharma refers to “leaving” this samsara world; “collect the debt” refers to “purification”; “reduce the debt” refers to the effects of practicing Dharma. By this article, we have approached another path leading to the true nature of mind through purification. This path instructs us to practice renunciation, train our mindfulness and mind stability, especially pay our gratitude to the Three Jewels.
May all sentient beings’ sufferings be decreased.
Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear holy Guru,
I have read this article. I am grateful for being able to read this article as it helps me to understand more about the karma purification when practicing Dharma.
I understand that getting to liberation is a journey. During this journey, there are obstacles that Dharma practitioners might encounter, including: (1) disease; (2) nightmare; (3) financial loss; (4) gossip and/or slander. According to holy Guru’s guidance, these obstacles can be considered as chances to challenge practitioner’s faith. Because things that do not kill us make us stronger, so seven instructions of holy Guru in this article help me to understand that these obstacles are actually chances for me to practice renunciation, train my mindfulness, mind stability and especially pay gratitude to the Three Jewels. By following that, I believe I can stop falling into negative behaviors, such as whining, blaming or getting angry when things get hard or difficult. As a result, getting inner happiness is possible to achieve if I diligently practice Dharma and keep my mind trained according to holy Guru’s instruction.
Thank you holy Guru for your teaching. May holy Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
Thank you Dharma brother Cao Dieu Mat Tu for your translation.

  22. Cao Diệu Nhất Nguyên says:

    Dear Holy Guru,
I’m grateful for the article. Today I’ve learnt about Purification (1) disease (2) nightmare (3) financial loss (4) gossip and/or slander.

As a Buddhist practitioner, I should always try to be mindful, not create bad causes to avoid bad effects. However, when the cause and the effect are not matching (for example, when I lock the house carefully but still get robbed), I must realize it is the process of Purification. I should feel less sad. Instead, I should feel relieved that my heavy karma will be decreased to light karma, and light karma will be cleaned completely. It is necessary for me to pay off the debt now so I can escape Samsara in the future.

    I should view Purifications as:

    1. A chance to challenge my faith
    2. An examination on my power of mind-control
    3. Blessing by the Three Jewels for my Dharma practices

    Also:
    4. Illness will reduce my greed and arrogance
    5. Nightmares will reduce karma hindrances from my countless lives
    6. Financial loss is a chance for me to practice renunciation, in which I understand it is better to lose money, or property than lose my life
    7. Gossip and slander are chances for me to (1) examine my power of mind control, whether it is shaken by praise and blame and (2) examine my wisdom to avoid bad rumors.

I’m grateful for the Guru’s article today. May the Guru have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings’ sufferings be decreased. May the Covid 19 pandemic will soon be over.

  25. Cao Diệu Tuyết Hoa says:

    Dear Guru,
I am delighted to read this article.
I am thankful for Guru teaching us how are insights on karma purification on the way to the Enlightenment. Through that, I know that when the Buddhist practitioner does right on the path to Liberation City, we will receive some incidents are demonstrations of karmic hindrances purification, which means heavy karma will be decreased to light karma, light karma will accordingly be cleaned completely. We can see it if it can be recognized when the cause and the effect are not matching as the guiding of Guru by the body, speech, and mind.
The insights on karma purification will show by 04 action: (1) Disease (2) nightmare (3) financial loss (4) gossip and/or slander. The karma purification will make to Buddhist practitioners have to some benefit as below:
The first, experiencing karma purification in each of the four above mentioned which is helped practitioners have a chance to challenge the faith in harsh circumstances.
Second, it is a necessary condition to examine the Buddhist practitioners’ power of mind-control.
Third, it is the showing of blessing from Three Jewels after practicing Dharma.
Fourth, it makes the Buddhist practitioner’s reminder that “Do not desire perfect heath can easily increase one’s greed and arrogance” (the treatise on the King of Treasures Samadhi) when we fall in the disease case.
Fifth, we can purify karma hindrances by nightmares.
Sixth, it makes Buddhists can practice renunciation.
Seventh, it makes the Buddhist practitioners fall into the victim to gossip and/or slander, which helps they can control the mind.
Finally, after the insights on karma purification which is helped us realize our merit and feel the blessing from Three Jewels by the Guru channel. Not only that, the Guru’s showing and guiding us the right way to Liberation by the way which is heavy karma will be decreased to light karma, but light karma will also accordingly be cleaned completely. I will keep in mind all the teaching from Guru to get inner happiness. I am grateful to Guru.
May Guru have good health and live long for all the sake of sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the Buddha nature’s happiness.
May the Covid 19 will end soon.

Thank you so much for your clear explanation about karma purification while practicing dharma. I have learnt all aspects of karma purification and keep the faith in Guru and Buddha as well as the holy pride to be a Buddhist and to practice dharma daily under Guru’s guidance.
I believe that we have limitedness bad karma for the bad rebirth with numerous sufferings in this Saha world. If we are not guided by Guru with easy and effective methods, our bad karma must be increasing resulting in much more sufferings. Thanks to Guru’s six spiritual innovation, we have a wonderful opportunity to purify bad karma little by little, day by day; then our sufferings are less then they will end one day. We enjoy the happiness and blessings every present moment while practicing dharma.
In addition, your teaching reminds me of contemplating my actions of speech, body and mind then gradually correct myself on the right track to move forward the city of liberation.
I am so grateful to follow your footsteps on the path to enlightenment.
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.
May covid 19 pandemic come to an end soon.

    Dear Guru,
Thank you for giving us the 8th lesson on Eight Dharma Methods of taking refuge in the Three Jewels. This article gave us the right understanding of “purification” when we practise dharma on the right orbit and getting the four situations: 1) disease, 2) nightmare, 3) financial lost, 4) gossip and/or slander. If we encounter one or some of the four above situations while we still stay alert in body, speed and mind, we should be feeling blessed as “heavy karma will be decreased to light karma, light karma will accordingly be cleaned completely.” This lesson has strengthened our faith in Guru and the Three Jewels even when we are in harsh situations, as it helped me much more believe that we’ll definitely harvest the good effects of practising right Dharma.
May Guru have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.
May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to an end soon.
    Om mani padme hum!

    Dear holy Guru,
I have read this interesting article. Thank you for teaching me such a helpful, eyes-opening lesson.
Thanks to your lesson, I can understand and see the unfortunate occurrences or hardship that happens to me or others in a positive way. Just like what Guru had taught me “Don’t see everything as defects”, I understand that sometimes bad things happens to us actually happens for good reasons. And good reasons, in this case, is karma purification, is what we should value above even goods things. Guru always taught me to see things, events as what they truly are, not what they appear to be, thus helping me to stay mindful and grateful. Thank you, Guru.
I pray for the good health and longevity of Guru for the sake of all sentient beings,
May all sentient beings be free from sufferings,
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  47. TantraMikaya (jane) says:

Dear holy Guru. Good morning from Berlin. I am so happy to hear you are fine. I felt so sorry to read you had a food poisoning. My special thanks for this wonderful and great article that we all the Practitioners understand that our health is the most important. The life is so precious and it can go to the end very fast. In this time here I saw that it is so important to have a pure mind from Meditation because I saw so much people sick from depressions and without hope that the terrible time go to a end . But We learned from your wise articles how we can influence our karma ourselves through bodhicitta and our daily practice. All is in our hand. We believe and trust in rebirth: the spirit of all people leaves its old body behind after death and looks for a new one. We should give our focus to the right things. If we lost money thats not the badest thing. If we lost health and life it is more bad. But we can start by ourselves with a clear mind and to be grateful. The “three characteristics of existence”, also referred to as “Dharma seals”, belong to the core of the Buddhist view of life, of the world, of the universe. They mark the properties inherent in all physical and psychological things. What kind of body it will be determines the karma of the person, i.e. his actions, but also thoughts, intentions and longings. All that is passes. Everything that becomes goes away. Every moment is irretrievably gone in the next, no longer tangible, cannot be copied. The minutes go by, the hours, the days, weeks, months, years, centuries and millennia. Everything changes. Our bodies age and get sick, our guinea pigs and goldfish and dogs die, and all of our loved ones will I find that worrying, it scares me. First. But there is also a great deal of comfort in Anicca. If nothing remains, then there is nothing that torments us. Headaches pass, fights, uncomfortable feelings.
„You cannot step into the same river twice”, this is how the Greek philosopher Heraclitus summarized the matter.Everything is always different. Life flows inexorably. The more we accept constant change and look it in the face, the less we look away, the easier life becomes. We can celebrate this truth. We are free. Even more: it also reminds us of the preciousness of everything that is dear to us. Our health, the child’s smile, the partner’s massage, our jobs, the sunshine and the stars in the sky. To live means to suffer, because we humans want to hold onto what cannot be held onto. Cling to material things as well as to our expectations and good feelings.
Because everything flows, sooner or later we end up empty-handed (and even our empty hands are of course dust at some point).
The more we defend ourselves against this fact and the more we want to avoid the painful feelings that come with it … the more they have us in their power. We must celebrate the life what it is and doing all with Boddhicitta and daily practice, follow our holy Guru and his wise Article to become Enlightened. May our holy Guru stay healthy and blessed for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the Happiness of Buddhas nature. May Corona go away soon Om Mani Padme Hum. 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for sharing your insights! Those life incidents that you mentioned are common to human beings with eight types of sufferings. However, as Buddhist practitioners, by understanding the Buddha’s teachings and practicing Dharma, we are not scared of them and should not worry over those things. On the contrary, we have different approach as those are precious chances to purify karma and to challenge our faith in harsh circumstances.
