Thanh Tri – the 3rd Mind Dharma: THE PRACTICE OF UNINTERRUPTED OFFERING – Part 8: “PRETTY PIGLET”: FROM A FOLK CUSTOM TO DHARMA PRACTICE

Vietnamese people often put part of their money in the piggy bank (usually made of ceramic or porcelain) as a traditional way to save money for emergency. Just like a sun ray being converged through a magnifying glass onto a focal point until it gains sufficient energy to burn dried grasses, so does the mind dharma of uninterrupted offering. The piggy bank can be flexibly and conveniently used for making offerings because it is a mobile means of practice which can be put in their house or room. You may raise a question on why a pig made of ceramic or porcelain can be the subject of making offerings while there is no such kind of thing among 12 subjects worth of making offerings as mentioned in Buddhist canons? In fact, you will see lots of things have been taken as the symbol of royal power. In the past, the King of Tang Dynasty is said to have bestowed a peacock feather fan with royal seal to Li Bai which helped him get respectful greetings from mandarins in anywhere he came. Later in China’s Qing Dynasty, there was the similar case of National Preceptor Yu Lin (Yulin Guoshi). In Song Dynasty, Bao Zheng was granted an imperial sword and whenever it was exhibited, people around him, irrespective of their social classes, must pay respect and obedience to him as if he was the emperor. It is said that the Avalokiteshvara manifested in the form of a horse to save a person and in early 20th century, Tomo Geshe Rinpoche in the Land of Snow presented a small Buddha statue to a western practitioner which gave him favorable conditions during his journey to learn Dharma. I am doing in that way now! After my petition to our holy Avalokiteshvara regarding the “ceramic piglet”, I’ve given my spiritual power, my mind and my vow to it and made it become an emblem of mine. Now you can put money into it each day (morning, noon or afternoon) at any amount possible as a practice of making offerings to Master Thinley – Nguyen Thanh, your Guru.

Master Thinley- Nguyen Thanh

Then another question may come to your mind on how to practice with this holy “piggy bank”. Let take the following steps:

1/ You will insert money in the slot of the piggy bank. The money can be the one which is in use in your country or can be international currency.

2/ There is no limit in the amount of offering. It depends on your financial ability but it should be at least from VND2,000 upwards for each time of making offering.

3/ In case you travel far away, you should put the offering money into an envelope and return it to the piggy bank after coming home.

4/ Interruption is not encouraged (should not forget to practice every day). Do not make offerings as a compensation for missing days or interrupted period.

5/ The time limit for the completion of this practice is one year, beginning from this New Year Dharma conference until the one in the next New Year.

6/ If the practitioner misses from 1 to 3 times, he will obtain top level; from 4 to 7 times, mid-level; and from 8 times upwards, low level.

7/ Do not use small piggy bank to avoid any inconvenience it may cause.

8/ The piggy bank should not be made of any other kinds of material but rather ceramics or porcelain.

9/ Do not use the “piggy bank” in the form of other animals because the pig is the symbol of prosperity. The Manjusri Bodhisattva is said to manifest in the form of a pig to examine the belief of a Mahayana practitioner.

10/ Put the words “Master Thinley – Nguyen Thanh” on top or the side of the pig.

The image of the pig has long time been familiar with Vietnamese people, thus give you an interesting feeling whenever look at it. Now you’ve put my Dharma title on the piggy bank so you should accordingly see it as me – your Guru. Besides, you need place it on a high position alone and do not let it be surrounded by other stuffs.

I put the name of this mind dharma as “Pretty Piglet”

With this mode of practice, you are still able to make offerings to me uninterruptedly without traveling far away. I put the name of this practice as “Pretty Piglet” because of its literal appearance and the real meaning in the sense of mind dharma. As you all know, the mind dharma is always beautiful because Buddhist Dharma is perfect, magnificent, supremely skillful, exceptional or in a word, sublime.

The daily practice of making offerings to the “Pretty Piglet” will help you transform your mind gradually until it shapes a mind dharma. Hence, we can practice uninterrupted offering with high efficiency without taking our time and effort. Uninterrupted spiritual practice (Cause) will lead to a success in life (Effect); The offering of money (Cause) will bring back the prosperity or wealth (Effect), all in the sense of comparing yourself to who you were yesterday. You should listen to the sharing of Mat Tat Kiem titled “The Efficiency of “Pretty Piglet” Practice” for your reference(http://chanhtuduy.com/hieu-qua-cua-tu-phap-heo-con-xinh-dep-dao-huu-mat-tat-kiem-chia-se-2/).

Nonetheless, success in life is merely leaves and branches of a beautiful flower while its scent that matters, just like only Dharma flower has the scents of “Precept”, “Concentration”, “Wisdom”, “Liberation” and “Knowledge of Liberation”. I will give more explanation on the meaning of those scents in next part.

Only Dharma flower has the scents of “Precept”, “Concentration”, “Wisdom”, “Liberation” and “Knowledge of Liberation”.

  2. Dear reverend Guru,

I am so thankful to read the 8th part of the series on Thanh Tri –the 3rd Mind Dharma: The Practice of Uninterrupted Offering. From your reasoning, I’ve now fully known steps of practicing offering via means of the “Pretty Pig”. This practice is of high efficiency for its flexibility and convenience which without taking too much time and effort. My sincere gratitude to you for your invention of such holy, wonderful mind dharma through which we can gain success in life and social achievements thanks to uninterrupted spiritual practice. One of typical examples in Song Nguyen Tantra House is the worldly success of brother Mat Tat Kiem in his sharing named “The Efficiency of “Pretty Pig” Practice”.

Through your teachings, I come to know that such worldly success is merely sub-benefit of this mind dharma, just like branches and leaves that are decorative for a beautiful flower. Only the scent of the flower that counts. Likewise, only “Dharma flower” possesses the scents of Precept, Concentration, Wisdom, Liberation and Knowledge of Liberation. Thank you for bestowing on us this great, meaningful sermon.

May Guru and your consort have health, live long for the benefit of all sentient beings

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature

    Om Ah Hum
