THANH TRI – THE 4TH MIND DHARMA: “LOTUS WALKING DHARANI.” LESSON 4: THE PARADIGM FOR PRACTICES IN TWO PHASES OF THE 4TH MIND DHARMA.( Luận giải đệ tứ tâm pháp Thanh Trí: Liên hoa bách bộ thần chú đà la ni, Bài 4: Mô thức thực hành ở hai giai đoạn của đệ tứ tâm pháp Thanh Trí)

According to my examination, within the six spiritual inventions of Song Nguyen Tantra House, the 4th mind Dharma is the most widely used. This simple mind Dharma is not limited by the environment, time, or internet connecting devices (smartphones, computers…). Was there any day that you didn’t walk even a step? Hence, there are always many chances for a practitioner to perform the practice. The real question is — Is he/she mindful enough to do so?

Within the six spiritual inventions of Song Nguyen Tantra House, the 4th mind Dharma is the most widely used

When reciting the mantra along with the footsteps (the 4th mind Dharma), the practitioners might face difficulties with the walking pace despite having enough six steps. The syllable “Ni” always ties with the act of bringing down the left foot to the ground while the syllable “Hum” always ties with the right one; this method has one less syllable than the Theravada method to avoid tension while walking a longer distance (over 1000 meters). At first, the practitioners might misstep between syllables “Ni” and “Hum,” but they will gradually get accustomed to it. If their Samadhi power increases, the practitioners will walk in lotus walks with enthusiasm and positivity, as if they were in a marching band. They can walk for miles and miles; they can step up steep slopes or high stairs without feeling tired like the others since they’re not thinking about tiredness. Instead, they focus on each of their footsteps and forget about the inner or outer conditions. They might walk faster than usual, but they never misstep on the predetermined syllables. The practice is both Samadhi meditation (non-distraction is meditation) and Visualization meditation (reciting mantra is connecting with the pure mind of the Buddhas)

The syllable “Ni” always ties with the act of bringing down the left foot to the ground while the syllable “Hum” always ties with the right one

The practitioner can walk for miles and miles; they can step up steep slopes or high stairs without feeling tired like the others since they’re not thinking about tiredness. Instead, they focus on each of their footsteps and forget about the inner or outer conditions

To increase the power of visualization, however, the practitioners must enter a higher level by visualizing Avalokiteshvara’s image and the lotus flower on every step. Each time their foot that ties with the syllable “Ni” touches the ground, the practitioners visualize a lotus that blossoms underneath (its color and number of petals depend on one’s visualization). The same is applied for the syllable “Hum.” Visualizing the image of Avalokiteshvara, however, doesn’t require following the walking pace. The practitioner keeps the Avalokiteshvara’s image on top of their head, how high or how low depends on one’s preference. This image can be visualized at the same time as the lotus underneath their feet, or at a different time. Attaching an image to a specific time will burden the mind. If the practitioner cannot visualize the Yidam deity clearly on top of their head, they can visualize a sphere of light floating in mid-air. Though the Avalokiteshvara’s image is up above, please remember to maintain a natural eye level (neither too high nor too low), as this visualization is by the sight of one’s mind, not one’s eyes. Once they become proficient in this practice, the practitioners will establish the Dharma eye; they will only need to see the Dharma and not the worldly environment, which causes no hindrance but rather provides better clarity.

Visualizing the Yidam Avalokiteshvara on each footstep with the Mani mantra that blooms with lotuses of right mindfulness.

In the phrase of Avalokiteshvara visualization (on top of mindful lotus walks), the practitioners start to walk at a slower pace. Therefore, to visualize in greater clarity and accuracy, one must practice in holy spaces or quiet environments. After getting familiar with the practice, the practitioner can start speeding up to reach higher proficiency.

For those who live a busy life, when practicing the 4th mind Dharma (Lotus Walking Dharani), maintaining a constant pace alone is enough. Students, disciples, and institute members are permitted to practice the second phrase after getting proficient on the first phrase of right mindfulness. In this process, they start with meditation and then move on to visualization, in which the main subjects are Yidam’s image and the lotus flower.

A quick notice concerning physiognomy. When walking in mindful lotus walks, which emit wisdom light, the practitioners must stay up straight and hold their heads high. They must maintain the confidence and the divine pride that they are practitioners of Vajrayana, Thanh tri lineage, and that they are practicing this mind Dharma to benefit themselves and all sentient beings. Gradually, they will appear happier, more likable, and more dignified. Since “Good mind, bad appearance — good appearance will be manifested by a good mind. Bad mind, good appearance — good appearance will be eradicated by a bad mind.”

It might feel odd at first, but the practitioner will gradually get accustomed to their “role” as a Vajrayana practitioner who is transforming into the holy appearance of a Buddha. Acting dignified when playing Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, or King is a must for even actors on the stage, let alone Buddhist practitioners who exercise the role of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and holy beings.

The practitioner will gradually get accustomed to their “role” as a Vajrayana practitioner who is transforming into the holy appearance of a Buddha.

Please remember, though the 4th mind Dharma is easy to understand and practice at the first phrase (as mentioned), it will only benefit those who have permission from the Guru. Otherwise, all benefits will be reversed as a burglar can never sit on a golden throne or chariot. No one might know about this act of stealing, but Demons and Deities will. Even stealing worldly inventions can be exposed, let alone stealing spiritual inventions, which, by definition, is beyond any ordinary vision. The consequences? Those acts of stealing — publishing books without authors’ permission, altering the texts, changing the author’s name and book title, etc. — will all be repaid according to the law of Cause and Effect, as mentioned in previous articles chanhtuduy.com.

Therefore, to avoid unwanted consequences, I will explain the process of receiving official Dharma transmission to those who seek the Dharma in the next lesson. Stay tuned.

Rainy day on the top of Phu Van Mountain, 13 August 2020.

  7. Tantra Dharmapabodhisita says:

    Dear H.H. Guru,

The beauty and the importance of the fourth Mind Dharma is the acceptance of it without the boundaries of environment, time, place and any other things. There is no single day we can find where we can’t walk. We can find many chances to perform the practice. Dear Guru, I have started my practice after your kind permission, focused on my mind is going increasing gradually.

Guru arose a question that a practitioner has the mindful enough to do so? Guru replied in his words when reciting the mantra along with the footsteps, and the practitioners might face difficulties with the walking place despite having enough six steps. The syllable “Ni” always ties with the act of bringing down the left foot to the ground while the syllable “Hum” still ties with the right one.
Guru always guides us with his experiences. I am facing such a problem whatever is written by Guru in this article, but slowly I am accustomed to Lotus Walking Dharni. Without forgetting inner or outer conditions, we can’t concentrate on syllables and footstep in starting.

We have to focus on both the practices Samadhi meditation (non-distraction is meditation) and Visualization meditation (reciting mantra is connecting with the pure mind of the Buddhas). Guru mentioned the whole process in this article. Guru says, “to increase the power of visualization; however, the practitioners must enter in a higher level by visualizing Avalokiteshvara’s image and the lotus flower on every step. Each time their foot that ties with the syllable “Ni” touch the ground, the practitioners visualize a lotus that blossoms underneath (its colour and number of petals depend on one’s visualization). The same is applied for the syllable “Hum.” Visualizing the image of Avalokiteshvara, however, doesn’t require following the walking pace. This image can be visualized at the same time as the lotus underneath their feet, or at a different time. Attaching an image to a specific time will burden the mind. If the practitioner cannot visualize the Yidam deity clearly on top of their head, they can imagine a sphere of light floating in mid-air. Though the Avalokiteshvara’s image is up above, please remember to maintain a natural eye level (neither too high nor too low), as this visualization is by the sight of one’s mind, not one’s eyes. Once they become proficient in this practice, the practitioners will establish the Dharma eye; they will only need to see the Dharma and not the worldly environment, which causes no hindrance but instead provides better clarity.”

After having familiarity with the practice, the practitioner can start speeding up to reach higher proficiency. When walking in mindful lotus walks, which emit wisdom lightly, the practitioners must stay up straight and hold their heads high. In last, it is necessary to remember that without permission of Guru, the benefits will be reversed as a burglar can never sit on a golden throne or chariot. So please keep it in your mind before starting the practice of it, please seek permission from holy Guru and then begin.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

    With regards

Dear Holy Guru, Thank-you for Lesson 4 on Lotus Walking Dharani. You explain how we should coordinate the reciting of mantra with our walking,Then you add howwe should add imagery and coordinate the imagery of stepping on a lotus flower with our left foot and the image of the Avalokiteshvara with our walking and reciting of the mantra. We must do all this with good posture and Dharma right view. We will then have a pleasant look on our face and people will like us. If we do it with wrong view we will have a unpleasant look on our face and people will not like us.
Even if we do all this without your permission, it will not do us any good, May Guru have long happy healthy lif for the benefit of all sentient beings. May Covid 19 end soon Om Mani Padme Hum

    Reverend Gurujee
    Om Mani Padme Hum
I bow before your lotus feet.
I am really grateful for this enlightening article. For a few days as I was brooding over the life of dean and bustle and paucity of time for a modern man to continue a long procedure of Nobel Eight Fold Path or even Samadhi in isolation, which takes much of time to practise and mastering it as well as in creating a pious and positive stream of consciousness. Today in doing so one may fail to do one’s normal duties and will distance the happiness of life due to the austerities as well as long procedures of the practice. As we know that happiness is a silent garden where one can relax. Hence there was an urgent need to reduce the travesty and tiresome practices of Theravada Buddhism that was once useful for attaining liberation, now has become obsolete for the man of 21st century living in the present context of science and technology. But how one can stage a departure from the original precepts, concepts and practice of the time tasted Buddha Vachana. Since for a couple of years my movement has accelerated, the reading of this sharing of our holy Guru relieved me from this great tension, but for quelling the mental conflict I need some rational. For that I gave a repeated reading of Mahaparinibbana Sutta of Digha Nikaya, wherein the Buddha has said that owing to the need of situation and circumstances modification can be made in the precepts and practices without impairing the basic tenets of the Buddhism and its concepts. To my great amazement and pleasure our holy Guru has brought about a mild procedural modification in the Buddhist Samadhi that suits to the needs and time management of the modern man. Now for practising the Buddhist Samadhi one has not to leave the house and the household works as well as to earn for one’s better living along with the family members and live in the forest or any secluded place, rather during the course of one’s normal works and other social and official duties one can continue the Samadhi practice through the simple procedural exercise of Guru’s founded Pure Mind Buddhism’s Lotus Walking Dharani as narrated in the Fourth Mind Dharma and can live with family and friends amidst the hue and cry of the worldly life. And thus Samsar (worldly life) and Nirvan (Liberation) can go hand in hand. Herein Guru has rightly obvserved, “For those who live a busy life, when practising the 4 th Mind Dharma (Lotus Walking Dharani), maintaining a constant pace alone is enough”
    Om Mani Padme Hum
May all sentient beings attain the Buddha nature
May the pandemic COVID 19 evaporate from this planate earth
Long live our Guru for the benefit of we disciples

    Holy Guru,

I bow my head before your lotus feet!!! Thank you for sharing “THANH TRI – THE 4TH MIND DHARMA: “LOTUS WALKING DHARANI.” LESSON 4: THE PARADIGM FOR PRACTICES IN TWO PHASES OF THE 4TH MIND DHARMA.”
In this article I learned that there is a beginner phase and an advanced of Lotus Walking Dharani. You first must start by standing up straight with your eyes level and with you left step you recite Om Mani with your foot connecting with the ground at the pronunciation of “Ni”. With the right step you recite Padme Hum with your right foot connecting with the ground at the pronunciation of “Hum”.
The advanced stage starts off the exact same but you add the visualization of the Yidam above your forehead. If this visualization is hard for you then you may use the visualization of a sphere of light or lotus flowers beneath your feet at the pronunciation of “Ni” and “Hum”.
Guru has also given us fair warning in this article that practicing this method without proper permission will cause us to have negative karmic actions for we would be no better than a common thief. Thank you so much for your guidance Guru!! May you have a blessed and peaceful day!

    Mat Nhat Nguyen,

I rejoice in you good deed of translating this article into English for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all of your legitimate wishes be granted within the right orbit of Dharma.

May Guru live a long and healthy life for the sake of all sentient beings

May the global pandemic caused by the corona virus soon end

  12. Tantra Dharma Sunyats says:

    Dear Holy Guru,
I have studied the Paper titled The 4th Mind Dharma: Lotus Walking Dharani; The Paradigm for Practice in the 2 phases of 4th Mind Dharma.I humbly comment that:
1.This insightful paper is of utmost practical import.
2.The spiritual skills it undertakes to impart are of an ubiquitous nature, unencumbered by space, time or online technology. All we need to practice the skills is the ordinary ability to take six steps or thereabout.
3.The skills constitute a sacred pending of steps, recitation of mantra and visualization.
4.With respect to steps and mantra,we are enjoined to pronounce the syllable ‘NI’ while bringing the left foot forth to the ground; to pronounce the syllable’HUM’while bringing the Right foot forth to the ground. In the process of taking these steps (say, six),we should focus on each of these footsteps,.We should forget the inner and the other circumstances as much as avoiding to think of tiredness. When Sadhu power increases,we are likely to walk faster, walk with more enthusiasm, confidence and positivity. Then we can walk for miles without being tired, walk up steep slopes, walk up steep staircases without being tired
    4.Visualization is two types namely:
a.Visualizing Avalokiteshvaran’s image as high or as low as we wish so long as we maintain a natural eye level and as such that where we find it difficult to visualize the Vidan Deity at the top of the head,we could then visualize a sphere of time floating in mid air.
5.We visualize the Lotus Flower (will color and petals) opening up as the feet take the steps one by one
6.There is need to sustain upright physiognomy in the process of walking: standing up straight and holding head high with divine confidence and pride of one practicing Vijrayana,Thanh Tri Lineage 4th Mind Dharma for personal benefit and for the benefit of all sentient beings. For sure, good Appearance will manifest in good mind and repel the bad mind.Furthermore,we need be reminded that in undertaking these exercises,we play,as it were, the role of Buddha’s, Budhisattvas and Holy beings, hence dignity is imperative.
7.4th Mind Dharma will only benefit those who seek permission from the Guru.Otherwise, the reverse effect will result as such practice would amount to robbery/stealing and will be visited by negative results according to the law of Cause and Effect.
Believe me, Holy Guru, this practical importance of this lesson for all Dharma practioners is unfathomable.
I bow before your Lotus Feet.May the Guru ever continue to enjoy good health coupled with Long Life for service to all sentient beings.
    Om Mani Padme Hum

At the moment, I am just trying to get my steps right.
