THANH TRI – THE 4TH MIND DHARMA: “LOTUS WALKING DHARANI.”   LESSON 6: NOT GETTING RESULTS? WHY? (Luận giải đệ tứ tâm pháp “Liên hoa bách bộ thần chú đà la ni”, Bài 6: TẠI SAO KHÔNG KẾT QUẢ?)

Milarepa had gotten tired from working at the Guru’s house. He was abandoned and beaten for years and had yet to receive any Dharma practice. The Guru (Marpa L.) was extremely short-tempered; He would beat Milarepa over the smallest mistakes yet treated other disciples so normally. In his wandering with this thought, Milarepa was asked to come over by the Guru’s Consort

Milarepa had gotten tired from working at the Guru’s house. He was abandoned and beaten for years and had yet to receive any Dharma practice

 _ Milarepa, you have been working here for so long, yet the Guru hasn’t taught you any Dharma. You have been patient enough! I’ll give you my jade bracelet, a memento from the Guru to me. Please come down the foothill and ask the local Dharma brother to teach you Dharma. He is a chief disciple of the Guru and is teaching Dharma to many others.

Milarepa happily took the jade bracelet, packed his belongings, and headed down the foothill. Thanks to the Guru’s Consort’s memento, the chief brother welcomed Milarepa with great hospitality. Within that one year staying there, Milarepa studied many Vajrayana lessons. Yet, he had never successfully visualized the Yidam Mandala, despite following all the right steps. The chief brother was very surprised, he asked:

 _ Most people have success within six months, yet you have tried for about a year without any result. I have to ask, did the Guru permit you to come down here and study?

Regretfully, Milarepa admitted the truth to the chief brother, who then suggested him to return and seek the Guru’s permission. Without it, Milarepa will never get any result even if he practices for ten years.

That was a true story of Milarepa — an attainer praised for reaching Buddhahood within a lifetime. I recall the story to emphasize the 4th mind Dharma, “Lotus Walking Dharani.”

 I have explained the extraordinary meaning and simple paradigm of “Lotus Walking Dharani” in two phases. However, if someone follows and practices, they will get no results (just like Milarepa in the above story) or even worse. Like a driver with a fake driver license — the more he/she drives, the more serious crime he/she committed. Like a company that cheated on their taxes — the longer the violation exists, the harder they are investigated and the more they pay. (like the $132 million fine of Fan Bingbing that brought her to the brink of bankruptcy.) In the Dharma and especially Vajrayana, the law of Cause and Effect will always be true to those “Dharma burglars.” (their practices yield no result; their Dharma lives weaken; their bodies deteriorate; their appearances worsen; their minds become unstable; their speeches lose power.)

The law of Cause and Effect will always be just

Who can get Dharma transmission? Who can practice “Lotus Walking Dharani” and the other five mind Dharmas? They are the students, disciples, and institute members who got permission from the Guru to practice at different levels.

The first level is “rehearsing” the mind Dharma, permitted to the students who have a Yoga name that begins with the word “Tantra.”

The second level is “practicing” the mind Dharma, permitted to those who received a certificate on the 1st mind Dharma — “Eight Dharma methods of taking refuge in the Three Jewels” (or eight paths to the true nature). Having this certificate means they have taken refuge in the Three Jewels, received five precepts, become a disciple of the Guru Thinley-Nguyen Thanh, and are one of the official members of the ITA Institute. They will receive certification with permission to practice.

The last level is “offical Dharma transmission,” permitted to those disciples and members who have deep seeds in Buddhism, who have strong realizing nature, who bring great achievement to the Dharma and Song Nguyen Tantra House, and especially, who have trust and devotion to the Guru. They will receive a certification of official Dharma transmission.

Based on these different levels, the practitioners will earn different results:

1/ Rehearsing bring blessings

2/ Practicing bring merits

3/ Offical Dharma transmission will result in opening one’s mind to wisdom

Offical Dharma transmission will result in opening one’s mind to wisdom

Who can take refuge? As the readers make more than 30 comments, they will receive their Yoga names. After six months since having the Yoga names, depending on their seed in Buddhism and their devotion to the Guru, they can start taking refuge. For some, it can take 4-5 years; for some, it can take only six months. In summary, the qualification for taking refuge and receiving Dharma transmission at different levels are determined by these following factors:

1/ Quantity and quality of one’s comments (mostly quantity)

2/ Achievements one brought to the Dharma and the Tantra House

3/One’s contribution to the articles

4/One’s practice of Bodhicitta in action

5/One’s devotion to the Guru

I want to emphasize the fifth factor as the most important, which expresses through these following actions:

1/ Follow the 1st of 25 Vajrayana precepts, “Do not criticize your Guru.”

2/ Avoid acting against or disturb the Guru (read 50 verses of Guru devotion by Asvaghosa)

3/ Support and contribute, directly or indirectly, to the Guru’s Dharma events

Finally, I want to emphasize the five methods of Dharma transmission from Enlightened beings (Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Holy beings, Patriarchs)

1/ Transmit the Dharma by emanating light (Buddha, Bodhisattva)

2/ By speech (Holy beings, Holy monks, Patriarchs, Gurus)

3/ By the mind (Holy beings, Holy monks)

4/ By holy appearance (Buddha, Bodhisattva)

5/ By symbolic languages (Buddha, Bodhisattva, Holy beings, Holy monks, Patriarchs)

From these points, I dismiss Thich Nhat Tu’s argument, that the Buddha has never transmitted the Dharma to anyone outside of India. This is a false belief and a reckless argument because it puts geographical limits on the superpower of the Enlightened. Nowadays, do we have to see each other face to face to have conversations? Even the technology of this era can overcome distances, let alone the ability of those who attained six supernatural powers. Thich Nhat Tu recognized dibba-cakkhu (divine eye), ceto-pariya-ñāṇa (mind-penetrating knowledge), and āsavakkhaya (extinction of mental intoxicants), yet he preaches the opposite. His statement was self-contradictory and his viewpoint is inconsistent.

Those are a few of my words. I hope that my readers, followers, and disciples will remember these points to further treasure the Dharma and understand Buddhist texts. I pray for all sentient beings to have a sense of shame and eliminate all disrespecting thoughts!

    Guru started this article with the beautiful story of Milarepa how he didn’t take the permission of his GuruGuru and why he is not getting the visualization of the Yidam Mandala.     • Ultimate One’s devotion to the Guru

    The fifth factor is essential. We should never criticize our GuruGuru, we should avoid any action against Guru, and we should contribute directly and indirectly to GuruGuru.There is a text śrī gururatnatrayastotraṃ (the writer is unknown) of Vajrayana where the importance of GuruGuru is similar triple gems. The stanza is given following.

    gururbuddho gururdharmo guruḥ saṃghastathaiva ca|
    gururvajradharaḥ śrīmān tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ||

    I bow down my head to Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, and Vajraguru who know Vajra. So we have to respect our Guru in our actions and writings.

    In the last of this article, Guru emphasized the five methods of Dharma transmission.

    1. Transmit the Dharma by emanating light (Buddha, Bodhisattva)
    2. By speech (Holy beings, Holy monks, Patriarchs, Gurus)
    3. By the mind (Holy beings, Holy monks)

    Dear Guru, I think venerable Thich Nhat Tu’s Indian teacher gave him wrong knowledge regarding the Dharma transmission because Buddha and his teachings cannot bind by the geographical limits. Buddha and his teachings are opened to all without any discrimination.
