WHAT ARE THE EIGHT QUALITIES OF A GURU?

Dear holy Guru,

I have listened to your sermon “the flexible means to keep the Bodhicitta Vows in action”

I am so delighted to congratulate two dharma brothers Mat Khue Minh and Mat Hue Phap on officially getting the transmission of Bodhicitta vows from Guru, marking the sacred moment when you both step on the boat of Bodhisattva’s path in order that from this moment, every being is so happy to pleasantly and with great surprise welcome the spiritual teacher of men and gods as the teaching in the sutra on Upasaka Precepts.

Dear reverend Guru,

The blessings and virtues gained by a Bodhisattva on the path of Bodhisattva are obviously beyond measure that we and all sentient beings in heavenly realms and human realms have praised and highly appreciated. Moreover, I have much more things to appreciate them at this moment when everything is in the fisrt stage of the long Boddhisattva path.

Đại sĩ Liên Hoa Sanh

Firstly, I would like to praise the merit and continuous efforts made by the two dharma brothers in order to collect enough wisdom and bodhicitta for the transformation from quantity to quality. Guru has evaluated and appointed the ones who are deserved and well-qualified to take the noble responsibility of a Bodhisattva.  I am happy with the new noble position of the two dharma brothers.

Đại sư Marpa

Secondly, I would like to appreciate their courage to get 64 Bodhicitta Vows in order to embark on the path towards Buddhahood to benefit all sentient beings. As a Vajrayana practitioner, we all understand the law of cause and effect in action; they will be verified and watched continuously by Guru, Yidam. So these Bodhicitta Vows are not the garland of praising their virtues, receiving Bodhicitta Vows is the noble commitment and promise made by the two dharma brothers to the holy Guru, Yidam and ten directions of Buddhas. It is very serious and brave commitment or promise which proves the qualities, courage and distinction of a Vajrayana practitioner.

Ngài Gampopa

Finally, in order that the two Bodhisattvas get respectful from men and gods, the Guru who has made tireless effort in teaching learners and disciples with his vast bodhichitta is the worthiest for us to offer heartfelt praises. He is the qualified and perfect Bodhisattva. In the book of “Gems of Dharma, Jewels of Freedom” by Gampopa, there is a quote it goes that in Bodhisattva Bhumis by Gampopa says: “One should understand that a Bodhisattva who has eight qualities is a perfect spiritual master (Guru). What are the eight? One who:

1, possesses the moral ethics of a Bodhisattva (Series of “Look at Guru, See Buddha”)

2, is learned in the Bodhisattva’s teachings (writing books and creating the website of chanhtuduy.com with many beneficial articles which illuminate the light of right view all over the world)

3, possesses realization (making the 6 maverlous soiritual innovations)

4, possesses compassion and kindness (the worldly success and spiritual achievement from learners and disciples)

5, possesses fearlessness (non-stop fighting wrong view and evil conduct and developing right view to benefit all beings)

6, possesses patience (teaching dharma patiently to learners and disciples)

7, possesses an indefatigable mind (tirelessness in the Bodhichitta actions and activities)

8, is expert in expression. (the uniqueness of Vimalakirti castle)

Contrast such eight qualities with that of Guru’s Dharma manifestation, I am so happily surprised that Guru has such above eight qualities. Therefore, thanks to the virtues of making continuous effort in teaching Dharma to all beings, in making example by his actions and in inspiring all learners from the true Guru, a Bodhisattva, all beings today gain more happiness, enjoyment and get more beneficial when the seeds of Bodhichitta were sowed for a long time by Guru finally sprouted and developed. In the future, thees trees of Bodhichitta will become the massive trees, following the great example of Guru in order to provide shade for fiery Samsara, free all beings from sufferings.

Dear holy Guru,

Based on the arguments from the teachings of Gampopa quoted from Bodhisattva Bhumis, I have learnt that these eight qualities are the spiritual standards to evaluate wisdom and Bodhicitta of a Bodhisattva no matter who they are, lay or ordained, no distinction between monks and laymen Buddhists.

Again, I am happy to appreciate your virtues as well as the good deeds and efforts of the two dharma brothers. I also pray for myself and all sentient beings when listening to this lecture, we gain greater insight into the virtues of benefiting all sentient beings of a Bodhisattva. So we make great effort in practicing dharma, nourishing Guru devotion and treasuring Dharma

May the two dharma brothers get successful on the path of Bodhisattva.

May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the happiness of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

Om Mani Padme Hum

  12. Dr C H Lakshminarayan says:
I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

Iam delighted to read this  precious article.

I would like to  specially highlight the  the precious and noble eight qualities  narrated by the great Master Gompopa, the eight qualities of an ideal  Guru or Teacher and explain and elaborate on the same. Nature is the best preacher or Teacher ( Guru ) ! Look at the fruit bearing tree. If you throw a stone at it, it will give you a fruit inspite of your assault on that.!

Another example, if you cut a Sandlewood tree by an Axe, inspite of being hurt, it gives a fragrant odour to the cutting edge of the Axe.!

Hence, an ideal Teacher’s or Guru’s compassion and kindness and patience should be  boundless even if  Teacher or Guru is insulted by a disciple by a mistake or verbally by difference of opinion, Guru should not condemn or curse  that desciple.  Instead  try to mend him ( not doing tit for tat ) in all the possible ways he could.!

A Guru should be as generous as a sea which keeps  in it’s depth the precious gems as well as weeds and corals on it’s surface and living  fishes and snakes inside it’s body without any discrimination.!

Guru and disciple’s relationship is so intervoven so that they have no independent individual identity with out each other.! No Guru with out a disciple or  no disciple with out a Guru.! Today’s disciple is tomorrow’s  Guru.!

Siddhartha also had  Gurus  in his earlier ascetic days before he attained Enlightenment and became Buddha ! So every Guru is a disciple of an another Guru before he became a great Guru ! Overnight one can not become a great Guru.!.He has to pass through several stages like Siddhartha  to become the great Buddha ! .In fact, a Guru’s name and fame will spread all over the world through his  disciples only  like Buddha’s disciples !

Then, how a disciple should Be ?. He should be like  Lakshmana to SriRama, his elder brother in Hindu mythology ‘Ramayana’ ! He should be like Parashurama who cut off his mother Renukadevi ‘s head at the order of his father Jamadagni  saint ! in Hindu mythology ! ( Of course , no Guru  will  order his disciples to kill any body or do such evil acts)

Such must be the obedience so to say !. A disciple should be sincere, obedient, and  serve while learn ! And follow the path of Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha.!

For an applause, two  hands are must equally.! Like wise,  Guru- disciple relationship should flourish in the spiritual field !

    Om Mani padme hum
