WHERE IS THE ROOT OF DHARMA PRACTICE?( GỐC RỄ TU TRÌ NẰM Ở ĐÂU?)

Asvaghosa affirmed in the 49th verse of “50 verses of Guru Devotion” that “Guru devotion is the foundation of attaining enlightenment”. I understand that affirmation very well. During a long time reciting and practicing 50 verses of Guru Devotion, I have experienced many times the blessings from Avalokiteshvara through the delivery of Guru. Derived from that reason, I was assigned by Guru to translate “Letter to disciples No.22: How to properly transmit the Dharma?”. I understand that Guru has granted me a precious chance to accumulate more merits, though it was over my capability to do it.

I started to search for related materials and books to read in order to enhance the quality of the translation version. I was shockingly touched while reading the teachings in the book named “The Heart of the Path: Seeing the Guru as Buddha” which was written by Lama Zopa: “Why is guru devotion the root of the path to enlightenment? Enlightenment is like a ripe fruit, the path to enlightenment is like the trunk of a tree, and guru devotion is like the root of the tree. From the root of guru devotion, the trunk of the path grows in our mind and bears the fruit of enlightenment. Whether or not we can start to develop the path to enlightenment in our mind in this life is determined by our practice of guru devotion. Proper devotion to the guru, or virtuous friend, is the root of all success, from success in this life up to enlightenment, just as the trunk, branches, leaves and fruit of a tree depend upon its root. Or we can think that guru devotion is like the fuel in a car or a plane, without which the vehicle cannot take us where we want to go. Without guru devotion, nothing happens— no realizations, no liberation, no enlightenment—just as without the root of a tree there can be no trunk, branches, leaves, or fruit. Everything, up to enlightenment, depends on guru devotion. Guru devotion is the root not only of ultimate success, achieving full enlightenment and bringing sentient beings to the ultimate happiness of liberation and enlightenment, but also of temporary success and happiness.

the heart of the path

My mind felt like being shaken after reading these lines. Many Buddhist practitioners like me, who started the Vajrayana path and kept practicing Dharma diligently, but ignored the root of the enlightenment tree, which means underestimating the importance of a Vajrayana Buddhist teacher/a Guru. How could our trees grow a strong trunk if the root was so weak, let alone harvest the fruits of enlightenment?
For that reason, His Holiness Serkong Dorje Chang once gave teachings to his disciples: “If you do the practice of devoting yourself to the virtuous guru well, everything will be fine, even if you don’t study. You can relax and have a good time, just eating and sleeping. You can enjoy life”. So, he confirmed that by practicing only Guru Devotion, we can make the best achievement in our lives and we will then attain ultimate liberation. Guru devotion practice brings blessings to our current lives, and helps to eliminate all of our evil karmas; so that we can attain ultimate liberation.

If you do the practice of devoting yourself to the virtuous guru well, everything will be fine

Furthermore, Guru devotion means the disciples always abide by the Guru’s teachings. When the disciples obey their Guru’s teachings and diligently practice sublime Dharma methods to end the samsara circle, they are going to be blessed by Avalokiteshvara through the delivery of Guru. Simultaneously, they find the way back to the true nature of mind. The Guru’s qualities will be transmitted to the disciples naturally and automatically thanks to the spiritual connection between Guru and disciples, as Asvaghosa asserted that:
A disciple with the good qualities of compassion, generosity, moral self-control and patience should never regard his Guru and the Original Honored One as different” (the 22nd verse in “50 verses of Guru Devotion”)
That means following a Vajrayana Buddhist teacher/a Guru brings countless benefits to the disciples, and only one practice of Guru Devotion is enough to compensate all other practices. However, Guru devotion is not meant to be promoted like a forced movement, but it was specified in the 62nd verse in “Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment” written by Master Atisha as follows:
“Then, to gain the Preceptor-Initiation,
You must please an excellent spiritual teacher
By giving him service and precious offerings
And by obedience to his words.”

Buddhist sage Atisha

While making commentary on “50 verses of Guru Devotion”, Venerable Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey also explained in detail about Guru devotion as follows :“Through devotion to your guru, showing him respect and making offerings, you accumulate the merit necessary to attain liberation from all suffering. Such service is done not to benefit your guru but for your own sake. When you plant seeds in a field, it is not to benefit the earth—you’re the one who harvests the crops. Therefore, with the proper devotional attitude towards your guru—seeing him as a buddha—the more positive energy you exert in his direction, the closer you come to Buddhahood yourself. Likewise, if you hate your guru and generate negative energy towards him, you are deliberately distancing yourself from his enlightened state and freedom from pain. As a result you bring intense suffering upon yourself. Therefore, if you see faults in your guru and tend to belittle him, remember that your opinions are unreliable and that only unhappiness can result from despising the states of happiness he represents.
Sharing the same opinion, Lama Zopa Rinpoche once told a group of students at Kopan Monastery that “Guru devotion is the fastest way to accumulate the most extensive merit, and it is a means to attain enlightenment”. He also emphasized to his disciples: “Of course, the main thing is having the right motivation, bodhicitta, but having a pure mind of guru devotion, with no negative mind arising toward the guru – which is very heavy negative karma – is also very important”.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Lama Zopa Rinpoche

“A negative attitude, such as a thought of giving up your respect, even just thinking, ‘What is the use of this teaching?’ creates negative karma; one breaks the samaya vows. A kind of pollution comes, and whatever you offer becomes negative and can invite sickness or obstacles. So, the most important thing is keeping samaya, not doing any wrong thing, not letting heresy arise, having negative thoughts, or losing faith. Lost faith creates heavy karma. Also, it is important not to break the root pratimoksha vows”.
Just after reading this, I was shivered in fear. It turned out that because of my ignorance, I have not realized the real meaning and importance of Guru. For that reason, I have unexpectedly had even tiny negative thoughts about my Guru. Following Lama Zopa’s teaching, all my accumulated merits were totally burnt right at the moment my mind arose a negative thought about Guru, especially when Guru applied wrathful method on me. How could I maintain a happy life and efficiently lead Dharma practice?
Then I realized how compassionate my Guru is. Through the topic of Guru devotion in many lectures, Guru has been emphasizing repeatedly the importance of making devotion to Guru. However, all those teachings were just mostly mentioned about “..a Vajrayana Buddhist teacher/a Guru is the main channel that delivers merits from the World Honored One to the disciples”. Guru meant not to accentuate that we seriously committed the commandment right when we started wrong/negative thoughts about Guru. That would literally destroy all our accumulated merits, “waste all the effort that one has diligently practiced Dharma”, and bring us catastrophic consequences.
Recognizing that we used our “narrow minds” to judge Guru “immense compassion”, Guru has adopted different skillful means to “save” us and our merits such as through wrathful method, making offerings, paying homage, etc. By doing so, Guru shared the burden of retribution with the disciples. Unfortunately, we have never appreciated Guru for bearing our evil karma burden. In some cases, the disciples even measured Guru’s compassionate motive by their own last. It turned out that I have never grown my enlightenment tree properly. I have tried to practice Dharma every day, however, I let those negative thoughts come back and forth in my mind. It was like I unexpectedly dropped more tree worms and insects into my tree, they have gradually assumed my tree’s trunk which was originally fragile. After that, Guru has always been the one who silently catches those worms and insects by using wrathful method which was rooted from Guru’s compassion. Until now, I became penetrating to Atisha’s teaching that said “Guru is more compassionate than the Buddha, Guru’s teachings are more important than Buddhist scripture.”

Grow the devotion to Guru

Therefore, it was also described in Buddhist sutra that “Any Buddhist practitioner who has a Guru will never fall into lower realms. Any Buddhist practitioner who is protected by a Guru will never be lured by negative companions, or be conquered by negative emotions. Any Buddhist practitioner who is, like somebody is your protégé, you raise them. So any Buddhist practitioner who is raised by a Guru will never fall back from the Mahayana, from bodhichitta. And any Buddhist practitioner who is held by a Guru will definitely overcome and reach above the bhumi of an ordinary sentient being, will be uplifted from an ordinary sentient being to an enlightened one”.

I am truly fortunate to have met a Vajrayana Buddhist teacher/a Guru in my current life. Guru has not only shown me the path of right-view and enlightenment, but also protected the merits which were dropped by my ignorance. I understand more the teaching that was written in “Tantra – Personification of Perfection” about the immense benefits of visualizing Guru with devotion: “Visualizing/Thinking about Guru in just one moment is much better than meditating one hundred thousand times on one’s World Honored One during ten million kalpa (lives)”. Practicing only Guru devotion in the right orbit of Dharma guarantees me a happy life and helps me to leisurely walk onto the path of liberation.
I bowed my head under Guru, I sincerely repent for all my negative thoughts about Guru. From now on, I promised to keep reflecting on all my motives and actions of mind, body and speech to the right track of Dharma, so that I will be able to follow Guru till the ultimate enlightenment.
I pray for Guru’s health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.
May I develop my devotion to Guru to the fullest so that I will be able to end my samsara circle.
May all sentient beings attain the Buddha’s nature happiness.
Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear holy Guru!
I have read this article. I am delighted with the sharing of Dharma brother Cao Dieu Dieu Hang in this article.
Through this article, I understand that Guru devotion is considered as the root of the enlightenment tree, which is very important for the growth of the tree trunk as the path to enlightenment and the ripe fruit as enlightenment achievement. Without the root, the tree can not get necessary nutritions to grow. And with the same meaning, without Guru devotion, I will not reach the goal of liberation. From my own experience, I realize that without Guru’s guidance, I could not know about Buddha Dharma, could not identify which sutra is fake or real. Without holy Guru’s guidance, I would not know about particular examples or substantiation for applying precepts in real life under 4 categories: Fixation, Flexibility, Observance and Violation or about the right view, particularly in 4 aspects (right view of worship, right view of respect, right view of viewpoint and right view of liberation).
I understand all the respect and offerings, which I have made so far, is for my own sake. It is just like planting the seed in a field, it is not to benefit the earth – this is me who will harvest the crops. Therefore, Guru devotion is also important for my own sake to achieve enlightenment.
Thank you holy Guru for your teaching. May holy Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

Thereby helping us to add a profound lesson about the importance of “devotion to the master is the foundation of enlightenment” even though the student is busy with world affairs, his roots are slow. But with solid faith in the Guru, even though all activities of body, mind, and mind are small, the student still attains enlightenment, liberation by maintaining faith, sincerely appreciating the teachings, obeying the teachings of the Guru. Serious effort with devotion to Guru on pure ground.

    Dear holy Guru!
I am delighted with the good deed and merit of Dharma brother Cao Dieu Dieu Hang sharing this article.
After reading, I more understand that Guru devotion is “the root of the enlightenment”. However, we also know that without the right view on reverence, especially Guru devotion, I could never attain the “ripe fruit” as enlightenment achievement. I completely agree with sharing of Dharma brother Cao Dieu Dieu Hang that “Guru has always been the one who silently catches those worms and insects (like evil deeds of demon nature inside and outside us) by using skillful means (like wrathful method) which was rooted from Guru’s compassion”. That’s a reason why Saint Atisha taught us “Guru is more compassionate the Buddha, Guru’s teachings are more important than Buddhist sutras”.
I rejoice in praising the virtues, wisdom, and Bodhicitta of the Guru. May Guru live long for the sake of all sentient beings. I pray for more and more beings to be benefited by Pure Mind Yoga.
Thank Dharma bother Cao Dieu Dieu Hang for the meaningful sharing. May you achieve all justifiable wishes.
May Covid-19 pandemic end soon. May all sentient beings attain Buddha nature’s happiness.
    OM MANI PADME HUM
