DOES WATCHING A DANCER WHILE HER PERFORMANCE HELP SPECTATORS COLLECT COUNTLESS MERIT? HOW FRIVOLOUS IS IT! IT IS LYING! (Ngắm nhìn nghệ sĩ múa được công đước vô lượng? Tào lao, bá láp, tầm bậy, gọi là đại vọng ngữ!)

In my eyes, there is a female dancer who represents the performance of the Thousand-Hand Guan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Behind her are 42 arms with flexible movements in all sorts of vibration amplitude. They represent the 42 noble hands of the enlightened one who has innumerable divine powers and immeasurable merit. It is clear that this performance of the Thousand-Hand Guan Yin is so beautiful and has attracted millions of Chinese audience. It is made by:

Lotus Flower Estrade in Song Nguyen Tantra House

Director: Zhang Jigan

Music: Zhang Shanri

Assistant Director: Zhan Xiaonan, He Xiaolan

Dancing designer: Li Lin, Wang Shuang, Chen Guihui, Li Bao

Performers: Tai Lihua and the disabled dancers

Performing unit: Chinese Disability Artistic Society

Translator: Rui Ying

(The Thousand-Hand Guan Yin dance was live at the scene of the New Year’s Eve celebration in the spring of 2005).

Later, many art troupes in Asian countries, including Vietnam, followed this version. There would be nothing to discuss if I did not read such a statement on TV screen at the vegetarian restaurant “Thuan Duyen” (good affinity), next to Dai Tong Lam, highway 51, Phu My town, Tan Thanh district, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, it goes: “you will collect immeasurable merit if you share this video with everyone”.

Can you get immeasurable merit if you watch this video and then share it with everyone? First of all, I would like to ask who wrote this sentence on the TV screen? And which Buddhist grounds did they base on? Nothing! I therefore affirm that this sentence “you will collect immeasurable merit if you share this video with everyone” is a type of foolish talk. The writer has a mental form of paranoia!

Who helps a practitioner get countless merit when contemplating the holy body? In the sutra of “the identification of the power from devotion” has written: “Contemplating the holy body of Yidam Guan Yin Bodhisattva once, a practitioner gets the merit as much as making offering continuously to 1,000 Arahats for 100 lives”. It is the Yidam practice in Tantric Buddhism, Vajrayana vehicle. But who can practice this method? Only tantric practitioners who have pure and genuine devotion have a sufficient condition to practice. The necessary condition is to have “the holy body of Yidam”. Fron this standpoint, I give the argument whether Tai Lihua is a Yidam or not?

Now, I give more explanation. The garment of Yidam Guan Yin Bodhisattva is far different from the costumes of the dancer Tai Lihua in performance. How does Tai Lihua’s dancewear look like? Her long, green fingernails make audience think of the goddess (Atula) or the demon goddess (Raksasi) or some female demons. It does not represent the holy hands of Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Next, I would like to “survey” the dancer’s face. How does it look like? She has a long and pointed face with a secular look. In addition, she has sloped eyebrows and slanted eyes, pointed nose and small mouth with unmatched lips. According to the morphopsychology, the specialists stated that her life is not good. (please read “Research and explanation on  morphopsychology” by Wu Cailu, chapter: “of ten bad  physical characteristics, the sound is the most important). I conclude, Tai Lihua tried to force herself to “role play” Guan Yin Bodhisattva but failure. If there is not the introduction of The Thousand-Hand Guan Yin dance before performance, audiences will think of that she performs other demon goddess or Raksasi as I mentioned above, they never think of the holy body of Guan Yin Bodhisattva.

The other three details clearly show the mistakes made by the costume designer and the statement of Tai Lihua but I did not want to point out all of them. I just give an example then you can find out the three mistakes. On screen, and on the stage, the actors or the artists wear gold, the jewelry to play the roles of the princess and the king; I would like to ask whether they are real or fake? Of course, they are fake, so what is the value of reality? It is nothing but an accessories to help them finish their roles on the stage. Likewise, such a dance artist Ta Lihua is just an illustration and the viewers should praise her artistic level, they should not assert the spiritual value when they does not understand the true meaning of Buddhist scriptures. Moreover, Ta Lihua is not good enough at the simulation of the Guan Yin Bodhisattva because she is not a Buddhist! From this standpoint, you should ask yourself that you are a practitioner, a Buddhist who has taken refuge in the Three Jewels and practiced the Dharma, now you contemplate the non-practitioner, who only wears the Buddhist robes. How can you get countless merit?

From that point of view, the arguments I have made on the argumentative basis with clear grounds and I assert that the sentence of that “you will collect immeasurable merit if you share this video with everyone” is frivolous! I think that everyone who views this performance with the devotion will lose much merit because they focus on the appearance but neglect of the true meaning  and follow neither the Buddhist spirit of “considering wisdom as the only concern” nor the rule of cause and effect. “

The vegetarian restaurant with the name of “Thuan Duyen” (good affinity), but really “evil effect”, which leading Buddhists to misunderstand the images of the enlightened one through the secular dance of the Thousand-Hand Guan Yin. May all sentient beings have humble qualities and sense of shame!

  5. Dear Holy Guru!

After reading this article, I was dizzy with the words “You will collect immesurable merit if you share this video with everyone” in a dance video played in Thuan Duyen vegetarian restaurant. It is no problem if this is an art show, but those lines on this video mislead the viewer, causing the art be equated with the spiritual value. Without this statement, perhaps the popularity of this video would not be so widespread that those who are slavish or believe without understanding would show their devotion and losing much merit. So those who write this phrase and such videos (such as Thuan Duyen vegetarian restaurant) have given a hand to harm beings, create “good conditions” for losing immeasurable blessings of beings! I don’t know whether the Thuan Duyen vegetarian restaurant has helped any living beings, obtaining merit from selling vegetarian rice or not, but they have lost much blessings through the customer “hacking” and the dissemination of this video.

Dear Holy Guru! When looking at the image of the dancer in the picture, I find the most offensive is the long green “claw”. Does it represent the holy hands of Guan Yin Bodhisattva? Impossible! Looking at her face on the screenshot, I was suddenly remind of  the character White Snack! It is also known that the dancer, Ta Lihua, is a disability dancer. We are defaming Guan Yin Bodhisattva while showing devotion towards an ordinary person, even a disable one on a par with the virtue of a Buddhist Saint. I applaud the Guru’s clarification in the article to point out the statement “You will collect immesurable merit if you share this video with everyone” in fact “a big fat lie”. Yet for a long time, no monk or nun pointed out this to stop the sharing of this video, as well as helping beings prevent of losing much blessings.

I thank you very much for the article. I pray for beings to be careful in making a statement.

May Guru and your consort live long for the shake of all sentient beings!

    Om mani padme hum!

    Dear Guru,

yes, it was very interesting and also cam share the feeling with surrounding people

  7. Tantra Citta (Jeffrey Bernard Forest) says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

The Sanskrit name “Avalokiteshvara” means “the lord who looks upon the world with Compassion”. Translated into Chinese, the name is “Kuan Shih Yin” or Quan Yin. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is the embodiment of great compassion. He has vowed to free all sentient beings from suffering. The Bodhisattva of Great Compassion has great powers and can help all sentient beings. His skilful means are limitless and he can appear in any form in all the six realms of existence to relieve the suffering of the sentient beings who live there. In the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha said that if a suffering being hears the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and earnestly calls out to the bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara will hear the call and relieve that being from their suffering. Anyone can be like Kuan Yin. Don’t let the dancing video distract from your genuine Bodhicitta practice. You may say that you don’t have a thousand eye’s or a thousand arm’s or that you lack skilful means, but it is your wisdom and compassion that can transform you into a Kuan Yin. With your eye’s and hands, you can help others. With your compassion, you can bring Peace and Tranquility to this world. I thank our esteemed Master and consort for sharing this beautiful article. May all the students and disciples at Song Nguyen Tantra House be blessed by the guidance of Kuan Yin and by the Holy Guru as well. Supreme joy awaits us all as we venture forth towards the Pure Land. Gate gate paragate parasangate bodhi svaha. May we all have long lives and achieve the happiness of Buddha Nature! Om Mani Padme Hum 🙂 Tantra Citta (Jeffrey Bernard Forest).

Respected Guruji,I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

    I am Tantra Nirvadeva.

Some Hotels  and  lodgsas well as commercial  shops do show or screen such dances  and  videos to attract customers and gain cheep  publicity only with a view to make money. It is like  making ,and manufacturing ‘ beedis’ and ‘ cigarettes’ and selling them to the public and also printing  ” smoking is injurious to Health”over the package bundles  of them,!. Not only Screeningsuch dances any where but also

Seeing such things amounts to negative thoughts and bad karma’s ! So one should be very careful in selecting the Hotels for accommodation whenever we go out on tour and travels !

No  wonder  if such commercial shops or Hotels one day in future put their name boards as ” Buddha  non veg Hotel with bar attached ” !so by seeing  such things and sharing such videos is utter foolishness as our Guruji puts it !It is all gimic by business people.! instead of getting immeasurable countless merits, a Dharma practicioner may go astray by seeing or sharing such such dances or performances which are meant for laymen.!

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Long live our Guruji for upholding Dharma.

  10. Lan Trần says:

    Dear Guru,

I have read this lesson already and totally agree with your point of view which is built on the wisdom of enlightenment. That is, there would never happen a case of gathering countless merits when someone shares a video clip related to performing arts, even it is used to illustrate the holy form of the great compassion bodhisattva- Guan Yin or Avalokiteshvara. It is just an art show and people shouldn’t add to it any spiritual values. Otherwise they will lose merits because of attaching to the appearance and neglect of the true meaning.

There is the fact that in vajrayana, Yidam Visualization practice will generate immeasurable merit to practitioners. However, that is the case when Buddhists have pure and genius devotion towards the Yidam. Moreover, practitioners must visualize the “holy form of Yidam”, not the normal body of a human being like those dancers in the clip.

Thank you so much for your clear explanation which helps to protect us from wrong views of any external events and phenomena.

May you live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all beings achieve the happiness of Buddha nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear guru

Thank you for this article. I bow my head on your lotus feet.i also guru when heard about yidam by you, gone to YouTube for knowledge about her. There are many other different yidams had been seen by me. I got confused then decided to follow only you.

I think this type of dance viedo is out of budhist world. I personally realized when we use to hear or see music or viedo more times then interest over it decreases if one who is non budhist hear it or see will be boared claiming negative thoughts on budhism.

I feel very good and fortunate to connect with guru.may guru live long for the sake of all sensient being.

May all sensient being attain true nature.

Holy Guru, I bow my head before your lotus feet! After reading this article I have learned of the restaurant Thuan Duyen who was helping to spread wrong view and wrong understanding through their video of the 1000 armed Guan Yin and the message “you will collect immeasurable merit if you share this video with everyone.” I am happy that after this article was written they took the video down. Thank you precious and Venerable Guru. You are like a breath of fresh air! Your compassion, wisdom and diligence are a great inspiration to us all. I offer my devotion to you.

Mat Dieu Hang, I rejoice in reading your translation of this discourse. Dharma brother, may all of your legitimate wishes be granted within the right orbit of Dharma. Thank you

  16. Tantra Mashita says:

    Dear compassionate guru,

Thank you so much for sharing this article with us, I really admired it and I rejoiced reading it as well, as you usual you see all the things differently, in fact I watched I video like that before on YouTube and the dancers were dancing while reciting a Mantra called “the greatest compassion mantra” certainly I liked the mantra and the dancing, and I even shared the video with mat, and I was totally surprised when she replied and said that she knew this mantra and recited it for 10 years before she met you, but after she met you she stopped to recite it because as you taught us only mani’s mantra can lead us to the enlightenment “one life, one mantra”, and to put it bluntly I felt that I’m lucky because I didn’t meet a wrong guru or spend 10 years reciting a wrong mantra like what happened with mat, but instead of that I met a fabulous and unique guru like you from the beginning and he taught me only one mantra that is suitable for me and can help me to calm my mind and also lead me to achieve the enlightenment, so I’m really thankful for you dear bevered guru

I bow my head down for you
    I devote myself to you
I express my gratitude to you

May you have a good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings
May all the sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature
May the pandemic caused by corona virus soon end
