Letter from India: Some contemplation on Dharma.

What is Dharma?

**********-*******

We, as Buddhists take refuge in the three jewels of  Buddhism :

1. Buddham sharanam gachchami.

2. Dhammam sharanam gachchami.

3. Sangham sharanam gachchami.

So, Dhamma ( Dharma ) is one of the most important component of Buddhism.

The ever going Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh ‘s  six scientific Dharma practices in Song Nguyen Tantra House are  based on this firm foundation of Dharma. Then what  is Dharma?

According to Indian philosophy, there is one sanskrit spiritual shloka which says like this :

”  Dhruthi kshama dama astheyam shoucham indriyanigraham

Dhee Vidya satyam akrodham  dasham  Dharma lakshanam “

Which Means :

1. Dhruthi – – Boldness in doing Right action

2. Kshama — quality of forgivingness

3. Dama — to keep the mind under control

4. Astheyam– Not stealing

5. Shoucham — External and internal cleanliness (pure mind)

6. Indriyanigraha — controlling our senses

7. Dhee — good intusion

8. Vidya– good wisdom

9. Truth — not to tell lies

10. Akrodham– Not to become angry with anybody with impure mind.

These are the ten qualities of Dharma. Another indian philosophy sanskrit shloka says like this :

” Dharmo rakshathi rakshitaha ”  which means  dharma would protect those who protect dharma”

  1. Dr C H Lakshminarayan says:

I bow down at the feet of Guru.
    Dear holy Guru,
I remember the saying of Buddha :
“Yo dhammam pashyati sa mam pashyati
Yo mam pashyati sa dhammam pashyati ”
    –(sanskrit shloka)
Which means whoever sees dharma, he will see me and whoever sees me, he will see dharma!. So Buddha is the embodiment of dhamma. Buddha and Dharma are like the two sides of the same coin!

That’s right! The Three Jewels are inseparable. As the Guru represents the Three Jewels, when you learn from your Guru and understand Buddhist teachings and nurture your faith and devotion, you see the Buddha and Dharma at the same time. Stay close to the Three Jewels that way!
