Letter to Disciples No. 296: EXIST – NON-EXIST: WAKE FROM DELUSION ( Thư gửi các trò 296: CÓ-KHÔNG: BỪNG TĨNH MỘT CƠN MÊ)

Dear disciples!

Relatives of Mat Hoang Phuc just informed me that he was facing breathing difficulties. We all eventually meet this kind of suffering. Imagine that among the smoke and dust in a burning house, how precious each breath we take. One learns to value the air only when he is drowning underwater, while previously, he wandered along the beach seeing things as normal, nothing worth to value besides the dream of overseas study.

Suppose that the atmosphere is being without oxygen for ten minutes, what will happen to the mankind?

It is strange that one doesn’t know what he’s got until it’s gone. Impermanence may give him a priceless lesson. Likewise, some people fail to realize the true value of what they are receiving, eating, enjoying.., thinking they take it for granted. Suppose that the atmosphere is being without oxygen for ten minutes, what will happen to the mankind? But few people are grateful to it though they breath in and out 21,600 times a day to maintain their life. Effervescent environmental and biological movements emerge around the world but eventually faded away and things return to their original starting point.

Spiritually, many disciples have gained well-being from practicing Buddha Dharma which is, as pointed out by Song Nguyen Tantra House, based on the rule: “self-help practice will gain divinity’s blessings”!

Here, self-help practice is just the necessary condition while divinity’s blessings is the sufficient condition. In mundane world and heretical sects, self-help practice may be done well but they never get divinity’s blessings, thus fail to reach the goal, given a lack of guidance in the right orbit of Buddha Dharma. Why is that? Nagarjuna Bodhisattva asserted: “If you desire higher rebirth status or liberation, make into a habit a correct view. For persons having a distorted view, even good deeds will all have unbearable ripened (results).”

“If you desire higher rebirth status or liberation, make into a habit a correct view. For persons having a distorted view, even good deeds will all have unbearable ripened (results).”

Then what is our “self-help practice” to draw in blessings? We rely on the Mind Dharma “Samyadgrsti-prahba Samadhi” in Pure Mind Yoga (Thanh Tri Yoga) of Song Nguyen Tantra House which has been applied successfully in the past two years. Some disciples may feel their life is not improved but in fact, it is improved each day, just like it need a certain period of time for the patient to overcome illness by taking medicines. The beginner may not get spiritual achievements right away but they can accumulate merits everyday as the compensation for bad karmas in the past and limit backsliding.

Therefore, an endeavor of practice is not necessarily proven by worldly success. It’s a pity that some have been over-spending their time in eight worldly concerns rather than Dharma practice, citing they are gaining success while in fact, they are losing mindfulness, just like oversleeping in a comfortable bed of fame. Has anyone ever thought about the tiny water drop? But drop by drop is the water pot filled! Has anyone ever thought about a tiny leak on a great ship? But a small leak will sink a great ship!

A small leak will sink a great ship

They fail to see the performance of the law of cause and effect due to hastily looking for success while have yet totally engaged in “self-help practice”. They fail to see the performance of the causality principle because their spirit of renunciation grows cold, citing they’ve been up to the mark (in self-help practice). Initially, they put all effort on “self-help practice” but gradually, they feel so complacent about their achievement that drop the weapon conferred by Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva – “awakening”, “right mindfulness” and “attention”. Their practice then becomes a graph of Sin which declines to negative part and consequently loses the “divinity’s blessings”! Then one day, they’re broke, their fame collapses, family breaks up, they wake up and want to come back. However, they’ve slipped out of the benevolent hands of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, just like a cave with entrance heading north thus cannot catch the sunlight!

Like a cave with entrance heading north thus cannot catch the sunlight!

Dear disciples!

The practice of Samyadgrsti-prabha Samadhi (read and comment) introduced by Song Nguyen Tantra House has brought back benefits which I don’t want to enumerate because you need to experience as my consort and I did. The Avatamsaka sutra (Flower Garland Sutra) teaches that “faith is mother of all merits”, so if you don’t lay trust in “mother”, who can fit you then? The top-ranked treasure of seven treasures still cannot impress you, how can the rest ones satisfy you? Samyadgrsti-prabha Samadhi is the unique machine weaving radiant rays of light into a “prabha coat” to protect your precious human body. It is the sign for recognition in the bardo so that we can gain support from Avalokeshvara Bodhisattva and dharma brothers while frightening apparitions don’t dare to follow. Read and comment will benefit both you and others as well as please both me and Guru, Yidam, Dakini. Why so? Because the rest mind dharmas are related to the teachings of Buddha, Yidam and Dakini while the second mind dharma (Samyadgrsti-prabha Samadhi – read and comment) is my direct way of practice. If you don’t show your appreciative attitude, you need not linger in Song Nguyen Tantra House too long. It’s time for me to ease the burden of Guru-disciple relationship if those disciples are subjected to the fourth kind of person in “the sutra of horse breeder”. My current physical sickness is also caused by the precept degeneration,  the breakage and encroachment of wrong view!

I would stop here. Hope to wave hand at those who are “oversleeping” in the belief that they’ve done enough “self-help practice”.

Om benza hum phat!

Very good article….a simple breath of air has great importance as a simple word of the teachings 🙏

  9. Tantra Lanidha (Ralph Keating) says:

    Dear Guru,

I bow my head down to your lotus feet.

Thank you for allowing me to read this article.  Yes, I have thought about how a pot can be filled drop by drop.  And unfortunately, I haven’t thought about the opposite—how a great ship can be made to sink by a small leak.  I appreciate you bringing that to light in relationship to studying and practicing Dharma.  We are sometimes blind to how important something is until it is gone.  All these points show why it is important to keep studying and applying Dharma continually so as to keep filling our “pot” and not suffer from the pitfalls of losing opportunity and realize it’s too late and the ship sinks.  I’m appreciative of your compassion in teaching this.

    Guru’s merit is immeasurable.

May Guru and his consort live long and healthy lives for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May all being achieve the happiness of the Buddha Nature.

May all being remain safe and protected from the coronavirus pandemic and may it come swiftly to it’s end.

  10. John Mruk says:

Dear Guru, Thank you for your wonderful article and teaching. You continue to inspire me.

  11. TantraMikaya says:

Dear holy guru. I have read your article Wake from Delusion with pleasure and I would like to write my thoughts to you. The awareness of our breath trains mindfulness and awareness. The ability to be alert and clear in awareness plays a key role in the Dharma. It is also an excellent antidote to restlessness, nervousness and absent-mindedness, disillusion and helps us to relax. Mindfulness of breath has a positive effect on our overall physical and mental condition. Buddha has taught a system in which you don’t have to believe anything, you should check everything, you can get deeply involved in the spiritual world that shows itself, which is as much a product of our senses as the so-called real one. The two worlds cannot be separated. I can see and feel them both. The Buddha has taught a system of how one can experience the lack of substance of all phenomena and the transience of all being through the practice of meditation. Its system is compatible with modern natural sciences and it has great potential to enrich them. The goal is the liberated, self-determined person, who does not disparage other religions or beliefs, does not fight for spiritual truths, beliefs and dogmas, but who can always justify his knowledge verifiably. Buddha’s teaching contains a very special ethic, in which one is not obliged to keep the commandments, but rather recommends to practice the ethical rules. It is precisely this ethic through which the mind clarified in meditation, combined with the learned knowledge, changes to wisdom. Ultimately, I follow this path and have gained a lot of knowledge about myself and others. Therefore I can say: Those who want to overcome their sufferings and disillusions and want to go a spiritual path, who are not satisfied with a purely material worldview, who want to look behind the surface, who cannot or do not want to believe the revelations and statements of a priesthood who needs Buddha and the Dharma. In all your wise articles you teach us holy guru how we should transfirm ourselves and look at our daily life. May all be free from suffering. May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beeings. May all be succesful on the path to Enlightenment . Om Mani Padme Hum

    Buddha is my life

    Dharma is my boat

    Sangha is my spirit

Drop by drop  water fills the vessel.!  Little by little  writing and commenting in  ” samyagdrishti samadhi ” will awaken our mind and give wisdom.! . It is the “Dharma coat “which protects us from our all  external adversities on the journey   in the path of Enlightenment !  If we have a small doubt in that, we sink to the depth of the sea of Samsara,as a small leak in the ship will make it to sink in the future.!. I am very grateful for each and every lesson I receive from you. May you have a blessed and peaceful day.

  15. Tantra Amashuta says:

    Dear holy guru,
Thank you once again for taking the tome to send a new lesson in thew suite for us to read. I do try to always be aware of how everything matters AMD nothing should be taken for granted. It I’d true it is much easier to do this when difficulties arose or as you said you appreciate it once it’s gone. I teri to think longer about situations before making ad decision of whether it is good or bad. I feel that if I’m learning from it something positive, no matter what it is, it isn’t bad. I have had many struggles in my life and each one had brought me to where I am today and who I am today. It had bright me to your site to learn of buddhism which I knew nothing more than monks were associated with it before reading your articles. All of my passions, mistakes, joy’s, have all bright me to guru and buddha’s lessons. I am fat from perfect, and find myself needing to be reminded that everything matters AMD everything had am effect but I’m getting better at recognizing when I’m not going this and correcting it. May you live long and well for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings be free of suffering. Madu all beings be given the chance to learn pure mind right view AMD a path from from suffering. Om mami Padme hum
