Letter to Disciples No.305: 1st Day of Tet 2020 (Thư gửi các trò 305: NGÀY ĐẦU CỦA TẾT CANH TÝ 2020)

Letter to Disciples No.305: 1st Day of Tet 2020 (Thư gửi các trò 305: NGÀY ĐẦU CỦA TẾT CANH TÝ 2020)

Dear disciples!

This morning I woke up earlier than usual (6:55). The sky was purely pure with the sunlight partly covering “Ao gia phong tuyet” (Magical house of wind and snow). The atmosphere was strangely silent. Here I sat alone in the living room, gazing at picturesque scenery, a brief moment of absence of thinking arose, no others, no self, no scene. Suddenly, a wonderful, lovely feeling came over me on the very first day of Lunar New Year though I’ve experienced this day many times in my life. And I really meant it!

Sunlight partly covering “Ao gia phong tuyet”

Admiring Song Nguyen Tantra House in it new appearance, I felt relief as everything has been well prepared for you and for the kick-off of the spring festival celebration. Suddenly, a smile appeared on my face upon recalling my forecast four years ago:

“In spring permeate the fragrance of Dharma flowers

Through every direction Bodhicitta spreads far and wide

Then Song Nguyen Tantra House sets sail

Across the ocean of Dharma to the land of true eternity”

It really is as Song Nguyen Tantra House has completely improved all facilities and infrastructure to offer best services to all followers and disciples from inside and outside in their attendance of the Conference 2020 – Spring Opening for Mind. This time last year (2019), we were buried with work preparing for the spring conference 2019 in Channel Long Hai Resort from one month before till the fourth day of the Lunar New Year. But this 2020, I have more relax time as the conference will be organized right at the central Tantra House. That’s why we have “Phap van duong” (Dharma cloud hall), “Ao gia phong tuyet” (Magical house of wind and snow”, and especially the “Tailoring room” of Mat Dieu (my consort) where displays souvenirs I bought from a trip to Sweden.

The “Tailoring room” of Mat Dieu where displays Swedish souvenirs

I remembered on previous days, all streets of Ba Ria province were clear. Strong wind made the weather a little bit cold. Pots of daisy and chrysanthemum displayed in abundance alongside the street seemed awaiting for buyers. While people were rushing to prepare for Tet, we stopped by Zone Café at Pham Hung Street in Ba Ria City to leisurely enjoy the coffee, feeling the blessings we’ve got that made the coffee more tasty in each drop. The newly black-painted Kia Morning now runs more powerful after its overhaul in October 2018 after five years of operation. Now it welcomes two more friends: Attrage and Mirage. This time I drove Kia Morning though it rides as not smoothly as those two cars since it bears Bodhi memories during our dharma trips. This is the reason why I always give it a special interest!

Rushing home

Spring comes everywhere in Ba Ria City

We stopped by Cafe Zone

Black-pained Kia Morning

-The coffee is ready, sir!

– Thank you!

I took a sip of coffee, feeling refreshed in the the wind breeze. Not a rush before and near Tet time, nothing can compare to it! Outside on the street, some people were hurriedly carrying pots of flowers to their home. I just don’t need to buy as the beautiful flowers are blooming in every corners of Tantra House. What do you think if a flower is without fragrance? It is valueless, just like paper or plastic flowers which bear artificial beauty. The beauty of Dharma flowers, meanwhile, is so incredible that gets praise from devas as noted in many Buddhist scriptures.

“The scent of flowers does not travel against the wind

But the dharma scent of Buddhist practitioners pervades every place” (Dhammapada Sutra)

Likewise, practitioners with yellow robe, shaved head, though holding high titles are just “paper flowers”, “plastic flowers” if their virtues are not equivalent. One may admire their beauty [flowers] from far away but soon become bored when discovering there no fragrance upon reaching closer to them.

Song Nguyen Tantra House on the 1st day of Tet

In fact, I had welcome the first day of Lunar New Year as the clock’s bell rang at 0:01 and the Prajna drum sounded continuously at Bat Nha Monastery (Prajna Monastery). Out of my expectation, Mat Duc, Mat Hue Nhu, Mat Khue Minh, Mat Hue Phap, Mat Binh, Mat Vien, Mat Khanh Van and Mat Hoa were here to celebrate the moment of New Year’s Eve with us. Dharma stories were told in the gratefulness for the blessings of Buddhas that bestow us these leisure moments. Usual tensions come from the organization of conference as spring comes have been wiped out. All have been done on the 27th day (Lunar calendar). I’ve been informed that Mat Nhat Nguyen and Tantra Mashinaga were flying to Ho Chi Minh City and Tantra Sutradaka is able to attend our conference. Other disciples and followers will come here on the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year.

We gathered to celebrate the New Year’s Eve

I finished the article at 8:31 on the 1st day of Tet 2020

At this New Year’s Eve, I enjoyed some jellies and cookies which were wonderfully tasty for they are imbued with “Dharma taste”. As the sky turned brighter, the scene of Tantra House became more splendorous by sparkling rays of the colourful lighting system. Slightly I walked to my Thanh Tri Room (Pure mind room), being profoundly grateful for the blessings of the Avalokiteshvara which thanks to him, for the first time in my life, I have welcomed a New Year’s Eve and look at the Tantra House’s scenery at the 1st day of the New Year with peace, equanimity and elation.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

Om mani padme hum!

A rainy afternoon on the peak of Phu Van Mountain

We need to find and enjoy the simplicity of the moment so we can enjoy all the riches the moment offers: the scent of the forest and flowers, the raindrops dancing and the birds singing. We can feel abudance where ever we go when we live in the moment fully present. World and nature is so beautiful, we are blessed many ways.

  8. Jason Cook says:

Flowers with out scents, makes many sense, just my two cents.
Truly Guru, it is as you say. A person who does not emit a sense, might as well just be decoration. One must dedicate their energy to being fragrant in ways that pervade the senses. Then again, I know little, and only aim to grow taller myself at current times. Perhaps this is a sign, to flower and bring forth my scents of sense.

  22. Tantra Sutradaka says:

    Reverend Guru

    Om Mani Padme Hum

I bow before your lotus feet

Today late in the morning an idea emerged in my mind to convey you my gratitude and feelings of my retirement that occurred yesterday night and I got relived of my tension of the formal bondage of my service life that always generated a painful feeling, very severely, whenever I had to apply for Duty leave from my University even for the purpose of meeting my holy Guru or to attend any conference in my county and abroad. Since the Buddha has preached to be in the discipline, the duties and its norms imposed by the college or the University did never appear to me painful rather I enjoyed the rhythm of the disciplined teaching life and given the best to my students and earned enormous pleasure, as I always considered my duties towards the students as the highest in the order for which I am employed and paid.

Guruji, I have become nostalgic to look back into the service history of the past 45 years as the things and events are coming before my eyes like a flashback of the films which starts from August, 1976 when I joined Nava Nalanda Mahavihara , a Buddhist Research Institute, as a Research Scholar Under Dr. Nathmal Tatia, a great scholar of Buddhism. After His retirement I continued my research with Dr. Mahesh Tiwary Shastri another great scholar of Theravada Buddhism of international repute. Basically it is he who initiated me in the Buddha and Buddhism as I learnt from him the Buddhist Text and Tradition, teachings and preaching of the Buddha in minute detail. Later on he became Professor of Buddhist Studies Dept., Delhi University. I accompanied him to Delhi University to pursue my research and did stay there for about 2 years till my Ph. D. Thesis was not complete. Dr. Tiwary has plaid a dominant role in my academic life, as he shaped my Buddhist wisdom in the brightest of its colour. Though both are no more in this world, but I cannot forget their contribution in shaping my academic personality up to the entire span of my life. As a research fellow I continued to teach the P. G. Students that gave me satisfaction, experience and knowledge. In the year of 1980 December i was awarded the Ph.D. degree and on 5 march 1981 I joined in Ranchi University service as a lecturer. On October 1982 I joined Nalanda College Biharsharif Nalanda. Since with the very inception in the teaching profession I started contributing articles in national and international journals, today my almost 100 articles and about 17 books have been published.

I started attending conferences from 1978. It was a chance or predestined that the very first conference I attended was International Buddhist conference and by the grace of the Buddha since then I never looked behind. A radical turn came into my life in 2018 when I was invited to the Tantra House in Vietnam to attend the conference on New Mind Buddhism. There I came in the contact of our holy Guru the founder of New Mind Buddhism. He changed the thought process of my life. From the theoretic consciousness I had to switch over to the practical teaching of my Guru. Earlier I read that Buddha teaches that Samsar and Nirvana may go hand in hand in normal life. Our Holy Guru has demonstrated how this is translating in the practical realities of mundane existence. The ways and means he invented for this transformation is tremendously helping his disciples. Whenever I was entrapped in any dilemmatic situation I read his articles shared in Chantu Dui.com a Digital journal of Pure Mind Buddhism and found the solution of the practical plight of my life, whether it is related to my service or the family life or external social problems. This open for all his disciples I am annually visiting our Guru’ place regularly for receiving his blessings and guidance for the future life. The crux of his teachings lies in changing the mind set of humans in a positive way. Since mind is the fountainhead of all our good or bad actions hence mind has to be treated to pious and positive. This has got it genuine expression in his article Eight mind Dharma. He has authored thousands of articles for the uplift of the mankind. He is the living Bodhisatva of present time who has incarnated for happiness of all the sentient beings of this universe. We are lucky enough to see him, be in touch of him and receive regular guidance through his speech and life. He is our role model. We feel ourselves fortunate in being his disciple.

Today I am full and happy to share with you that as we come to the end of the year 2020, it is also the end of my about 40 years of service. As I retired yesterday and have entered into a new chapter of my life, I wish to thank each one of you personally in general and our Holy Guru in particular for your unwavering faith, support and Guru’s teachings, preaching and blessing that has shaped my life in such a beautiful part of my journey. I am grateful to my only friend Rose Tran who had been instrumental in connecting me with the Holy guru. I cannot thank you enough for your love, generosity and kindness and for always being there. I am much grateful to my Guru and wish him a joyous, healthy, prosperous and a fulfilling New Year and the life ahead.

    Om Mani Padme Hum

Long live our Guru for the happiness of all the sentient beings.

May all the sentient beings attain the Buddha nature.

I bow before you’re your feet

      Dear Tantra Sutradaka,
I am touched reading your comment today. I congratulate you for such a proud career path you have led throughout 40 years, I am glad to be shared your path to the Buddhist academic work. I understand it does require a lot, not only high competence, but also passion and persistence to pursue such an outstanding career.
I am especially proud and impressed by your sharing that said: “…Earlier I read that Buddha teaches that Samsar and Nirvana may go hand in hand in normal life. Our Holy Guru has demonstrated how this is translating in the practical realities of mundane existence”. You show an open mindset that allows you to combine a wide range of theories you have learned throughout the years with the development of age, countries, cultures; therefore, you have easily got the understanding and affinity of my main spirit “Dharma is Life, Life is Dharma” through my teachings and practice methods (Pure Mind Yoga). I really appreciate that. Thank you very much for your sharing!
May all your legitimate wishes be fulfilled and you will enjoy the next chapter of your life.

  23. TantraMikaya (jane) says:

dear holy Guru The first day of the new year full of hope and with many positive thoughts and wishes for your health and the health of everyone. I learned a lot from the Dharma and your wise articles. In some dreary hours, Your words and the Dharma gave me confidence and trust. I understand how important it is to be mindful and trust in the Dharma. The turn of the year here in Germany was marked by the lockdown and families couldn’t be together and hug. Yes everything was and is changes. I enjoyed quiet hours with my sister and her husband. I told them what I learned from you. How important our positive attitude is because that’s how we determine our lives and our actions. Just as spring comes after winter, there will also be a new time after this pandemic. Thank you dear holy Guru for all your teaching to us students and all my best wishes for the new year. Then the moment has come to speak out, to express what is not possible in normal everyday conversation – deepest and most honest gratitude, remorse, goodwill, wishes for the future. These are things that we find it very difficult to put into words in everyday life. Through the framework of the tea ceremony that we celebrated and the honest form of bowing and pouring tea, our hearts open as if by themselves and the words that we otherwise find difficult, flow naturally from our lips. may our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the Happiness of Buddhas nature. May the Sangha be happy and healthy too. Happy new year to all. OM MANI PADME HUM 🌺🙏

    Dear compassionate guru,

Thank you so much for sharing this letter with us, I really admired it, I’m not in the mood and I really tried many times to forbid myself from writing a comment because I don’t want to write any negative things, but finally I decided to write a comment because I wanted to tell you happy new year dear bevered guru, I hope if this year be full of joy and happiness for you and that’s not because I appreciate and respect you only but also because you deserve that, and I wish I could see you face to face in this year and start my spiritual journey under your supervision certainly, thank you so much dear honorable guru you covered me with love, compassion and tenderness throughout the previous year and you made me speechless,

I bow my head down for you
    I devote myself to you

May you have a good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings
May all the sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature
