On the occasion of Vesak Day 2562 Letter to disciples No.256: ARBITRARY THOUGHTS ARE EVIL THOUGHTS (tùy tiện tư duy gọi là tà tư duy)

On the occasion of Vesak Day 2562
Letter to disciples No.256:

Dear disciples,

After Tantra Sutradaka’s article (the philosophy professor Avinash Kumar. S) on the Four Noble Truths, entitled “A viewpoint on suffering, the cause of suffering, the path leading to the annihilation of suffering in modern times” (http://chanhtuduy.com/viewpoint-suffering-cause-suffering-path-leading-annihilation-suffering-modern-times-mot-goc-nhin-ve-su-kho-nguyen-nhan-kho-con-duong-diet-kho-trong-thoi-hien-dai/), I was delighted that there were a lot of interactive comments. However, there was a comment that made me stop right away at that time because of the arbitrary thoughts which are Mat Hanh Giac’s, for example.

1/ There is suffering:
The Guru of Tantra Song Nguyen uses great words of serious warnings, examples, illustrations, or “moho” bitter jokes to shock students so that they can see the consequences they will suffer when they disobey the Guru’s teachings and continue their bad karma. There are various examples of this kind of teaching, such as “lots of on-road vehicles,” “heavy rains,” “potholes in front of you”, … or the terrible calamities that can happen to the disciples. There will be people who think, what I did is not so bad that the teacher had to say seriously. However, it has been said that “Bodhisattvas fear causes, sentient beings fear effects,” the Guru with Bodhiyanga of Discrimination sees the path of causes and effects, so he must name the terrible consequences to alert his disciples in time. Because human beings often do evil things, contrary to the Noble Path, they are completely unaware of the suffering they will cause to themselves. The Guru directly points out the course of causes and effects, from which students are aware of this suffering and seek the ways how to counter … “.

According to Mat Hanh Giac’s inference, the Guru’s criticism is a principle of “Suffering” in the Four Noble Truths which the Buddha pointed out, isn’t it? Thus, Mat Hanh Giac put me in a situation to break one of the major vows that is hard to forgive when making me equal to the Buddha to create a separate concept of “suffering”, while I am only an ordinary Guru who has not attained enlightenment.

In the commentary on the “suffering” of the Buddha, there are 84,000 secular sufferings, which is in total contained within the eight sufferings: “(1) not getting what you desire, (2) separation from what is pleasant (3) encountering what is unpleasant (4) five appropriated aggregates and 4 general sufferings of the human beings: birth, old age, sickness, and death. However, Mat Hanh Giac expected Tantra Song Nguyen, specifically the Guru, created the “suffering” and he said that his suffering was generated when he was criticized by the Guru? Wrong! As a follower of the Buddha’s teachings, Mat Hanh Giac should understand in the right viewpoint, why could he understand arbitrarily, which is like “take the wrong sow by the ear”? Moreover, others when reading Mat Hanh Giac’s comment in this article, they would wonder whether Tantra Song Nguyen has another Buddha who could create four noble truths that are different from Buddhas Shakyamuni’s?

Being criticized and pointed out the faults by Guru – the spiritual friend is the happiness to gain more awareness for disciples, as asserted in the Dhammapada: ” Should one find a man who points out faults and who reproves, let him follow such a wise and sagacious person as one would a guide to hidden treasure. It is always better, and never worse, to cultivate such an association.” Besides, Atisha affirmed: “The best instructions are the ones that hit the learner’s hidden faults. The best spiritual friend is one who attacks those faults”. Mat Hanh Giac personally did complete self-inference, attached his own thoughts to Tantra Song Nguyen as a way to embarrass the Guru. This offence is worse than the death of the lepers. Those disciples who were window dressing, used Dharma to protect himself in secular life, showed cowardice to other people and cruelty to his wife and children … are all such offences together with many other offences. Their inner as well as outer offences were pointed out clearly by the Guru so that everyone can see how they dimed their words out. They understood that their “corpse” would soon be pushed to the shore, so they had to leave Tantra Song Nguyen because their “corpse” would never be contained in the ocean of Dharma. Why are Mat Hanh Giac’s thoughts not in the right viewpoint? Getting the Guru’s criticism is blessed, and the disciples should be happy, but they are not, they don’t listen to and follow the good teaching but consider the Guru’s teachings to them as suffering, there is nothing to say!

Dear disciples,

Though Buddhist practice is the practice of liberation by the method of consciousness, a lot of Buddhists arbitrarily reject the orthodox path and think in their own way. In addition, thanks to detrimental effect to the crowd, their evil views became “golden molds” for their disciples. For instance, in many places, there hang the horizontal lacquered boards entitled “14 Buddha’s teachings” that tinged with wrong understanding. Another example is that in the Buddhist Sutras, they parrot “The Eight Realizations of Great Beings sutra” (meanwhile the right meaning and title should be “Eight Great Causes of Enlightenment Sutra”). Or people may not know that “Vu lan bồn” (The Yu-lan-p’en Sutra) is apocrypha, and they can vomit to hear the word “bồn” as “sink”, “bath”, or “toilet” in English). Some examples can be added that a philosophical doctor negated hell; the head of the largest Pure Land Sect in Ho Chi Minh City invited the libel saboteur, who talked bad to Pure Land Sect, to deliver lectures to his disciples; there are people claiming compassion, tolerance, generosity and teaching their disciples but themselves have “put the cat among the pigeons” when repeatedly slandered Tantra Song Nguyen until the real face popped out. Since I posted the counter-argument articles, they have been quiet as a tortoise retracted its head, or an ostrich put its head into the hot sand …

So far, Tantra Song Nguyen has been Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications with strong leadership and sustainable development meanwhile they have fallen their mind-covering masks. There is nothing left for them to react, only silence in the heart, but try to voice their misunderstandings to their group of disciples with private tricks, although they always chant the verses of “Eight Great Causes of Enlightenment Sutra! “

Dear disciples,

From the case of Mat Hanh Giac, and those who wear cassocks but inside are the hypocrites pretending to cultivate the Dharma (Padmasambhava said), I seriously alarm you that you should have correct understanding and writing according to the right view, otherwise there would be unintentional “Guru-ism” or intentional “embarrassing the Guru”, which can cause serious misconduct as I mentioned above.

The theories of the Four Noble Truths, the Law of Cause and Effect, the theory of Impermanence should be understood in the teaching spirit of the Buddha and the virtue. You should not make inferences arbitrarily from what you think “Do not rely on your own mind when you have not attained enlightenment!”

  1. Dear Holy Guru,

Thank you so much for giving us the precious teachings on this article.  I rejoice in your virtue of correcting the learners’s hidden faults with your compassion and wisdom.

I have learnt that only by following the right orbit of the dharma under the Guru’s guidance can we go on the path to enlightenment.  Relying our own thoughts leads us to wander in Samsara. If we do not learn from you,  we never know our hidden fautls and we do not have the chance to face our hidden faults causing by the evil ego. Especially,  we are not taught to fight our faults and correct them. Now,  I get more understanding the teaching of Atisha: “the best instructions are the ones that hit the learner’s hidden faults. The best spiritual friend is one who attacks those faults. ”

After reading this article,  I have learnt a valuable lesson in which we should keep mindful,  right view and have bravery to fight all evil thoughts and wrong doings for the benefit of self and others.

I would like to express my deep gratitude for your precious lesson I have learnt from your article.

May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

I am delighted with the good deed of Mat Hong Quang who has translated your article into English.  Her translation supports to spread your teachings all over the world for the benefit of all beings.

May Mat Hong Quang get joyful and happy on the path to enlightenment.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  2. Lan Trần says:

    Dear Guru,

I have read this article in Vietnamese already.  Thanks to your teaching,  I understand that we, the readers/followers/disciples of Song Nguyen Tantra House,  should not state anything that is out of orbit of Dharma. Those statements are not only “embarrassing the Guru” but also falling into “Guru-ism” which will pull us down on the path to Buddha’s pure land. I wish that myself and vajra bothers always keep right view and mindfulness for the benefits of sentient beings.

May you and your consort live long.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  8. Boying Baguio says:

    Dearest Holy Guru,

My warmth greeting to you and all brothers and sisters in chanhtuduy.

I am Tantra Maruta, from the Philippines.

I have read the article and it is such a wonderful lecture giving us the idea about the importance of handling our opinion and how to be careful to our thoughts in expressing to our fellows. There is a saying once that has been popularized in facebook, “Think before you click.”. I remember, this has been post due to some bullies in the social media, as well as for some comments from people around the globe, who had been tactless for sharing their opinions. It is indeed very dangerous, considering the possible damage than can be the result of a wrong idea. This could definitely destroy the dignity of someone that could lead into a ruined life.

Yes, indeed that opinions are free and it is in someone’s rite to possess. Somehow, we should be careful enough in sharing or publishing to other people’s consciousness. In expressing ideas, misinterpretation and misconception has its freewill to exist. It is in this manner that we should synthesize mindfulness to its extent. Right mindfulness to our speech, thinking, views, actions, can definitely prevent misjudgement to our opinions.

In some points I can say that our brother Mat Han Giac may not intentionally go to the deepest point of his thought to harm the Holy Guru or mislead the readers of the article. Everyone who are not yet fully touched by the essence and wisdom are still on the edge of committing ignorance. Our brother is in need of understanding, and guidance of someone who can get along with him, to explain what could be the danger of his opinion. Each mistake is candidate to be corrected. Each confusion can be cleared out through proper explanation. He need a hand to touch him and a concern friend to invite him for a moment for a cup of tea, sharing words of explanations that could enlightened his thought. Somehow, he might need a company to walk into a park and help him feel the beautiful ambiance of the surroundings.

We are all living in a world that has been lay down to our hands. All of us are siblings carrying the responsibility to make each one be on the right path. Yet, many among us are still on the cleft of wandering and seeking for enlightenment. Some tends to make ways to harm, confused, take advantage of his or her fellow earthlings due to lack of understanding and commitment to live a life that gives healthy purpose to this world. Usually, those who are trying to impost suffering to others carries much more sufferings within them. And if we look at deeper into the pages of their books, they carry more pages of confusion than we do. It is through making conflicts to others that they express their defense mechanism. And as my point of view goes, they need empathy.

I am not a hundred percent sure to my opinion to Mat Han but the only point I want to emphasize is that, whatever the mistakes that had been impost, it is never been too late to polish. Besides, we are all same beings living in the same world, capable to give understanding, has the ability to share compassion, born with the instinct of kindness. A good communication is what makes earth to be a garden of love that blossoms peace and gives the fragrance of a wonderful life to live. Let the magical phenomenon of caring each other fill up the ether that connects us all. In that way, we will all be interconnected, we will all be one.

  11. Tantra Mikaya says:

dear holy guru. Thank you for your wonderful article arbitrary thoughts are evil thoughts. I gather from this article that the top priority is to trust the wise knowledge of our holy guru. Because he is able to teach us the Dharma and the right path of enlightenment. Our arbitrary thoughts can drive us crazy and lead us to samsara. If we trust our thoughts and do not purify our minds, we will not be able to learn the Dharma and walk the right path, so we run the risk of ending up in samsara. An uneasy mind brings restless or bad deeds. if we want to be successful, it is important to follow our holy guru with devotion and practice the Dharma daily. It is true that everyone has their own needs and thoughts in everyday life and we are often guided by emotions. As we work to soothe, train, and strengthen the mind with meditation, our thoughts become clearer and clearer, and our lives more peaceful. With the help of our holy guru we can recognize our own mistakes and work on them. I learn with every wise article of our holy guru and I strive to train my thoughts with mindfulness. Because we only learn from our critics. When I personally feel that my thoughts or emotions are confused, I often tell myself that these are just thoughts that have no importance tomorrow. It calms me down and I breathe more calmly and enjoy my mind calming down. Thank you very much for this valuable article. May be happy and with peace. May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

Cầu nguyện tất cả chúng sanh hạnh phúc và bình an.

Con cầu nguyện Thầy tôn quý trụ thế lâu dài vì sự lợi lạc của tất cả chúng sanh.

Cầu nguyện tất cả chúng sanh thành tựu hạnh phúc của Phật tánh.

  12. Revered Guru,

I would like to express my gratitude to you for giving us a precious lesson on the occasion of Vesak Day 2562 which revolves around the essentiality of prudence on thinking to avoid arbitrary thought. This kind of thought will push the practitioner into the violation of Buddhist precept – not lying- and more seriously, making the Guru embarrassed. It is obvious that a Guru who just runs after the selfish wishes of his disciples, waiting for their repayment, is not the authentic one because the disiciple will not know what their faults are to be corrected. As a result, their journey to the City of Liberation remains far away. That’s why Master Atisha taught that: “The greatest spiritual teacher is the one who attacks your hidden faults. The greatest teaching is to correct such faults.” Your teachings that point straight to our faults help us to timely adjust our actions of body, speech and mind in alignment with the right orbit of Dharma. Thanks to you, we’ve never been separated from the right view or let ourselves sink in wrong, evil views of hypcrites under the cover of Buddhism. My sincere gratitude for your great compassion for reminding me not re-commit this fault. My thanksfulness to Mat Hong Quang for your great translation of the Guru’s teaching into English.

May Guru and your consort live long for the sake of sentient beings

May your teachings help sentient beings eradicate the suffering and the cause of suffering

May Mat Hong Quang fulfill all your legitimate wishes.

May all sentient beings be surrounded by the blessings of the Trinity

  14. Tantra Sutradaka says:

    Revered Gurujee

    Om Mani Padme Hum

    I bow before you

For last 3 days I was  undergoing hectic journey in the hottest summer days from my place to Patna and its local places for my essential works. It not only made me exhausted but also I suffered with sunstroke. I was scheduled to come to my wife’s place so in the evening I caught my train. The very next day I arrived Daltongunj  in the morning and I was feeling sleepy. Since I was in know of the fact that my friend has sent me a lesson shared by my Guru, I could not check my temptation of reading the lesson. Hence, I kept myself awaken till I gave cursory glance on the letter. I was shocked rather thunder stroked after going through the content of it. I wanted to read it again again in order to encompass its meaning and its worth but in vain.   Thereafter, I begged excuse from my friend as the fatigue cause by continues tiresome journey were not allowing me to understand it properly. I slept but it too was disrupted because of the long power cut. Hence, I could not do anything on Saturday. Today after coming from morning walk and having our breakfast I started reading it. Thing and the thoughts were percolating to my mind and compelling me to ponder over the precarious situation generated by Mat Hanh Glac’s ignorance based venom vomiting in terms of accusing our revered Guru for the sufferings of his disciples. It was a painful surprise for me as it is unexpected from a disciple.

Since it was Sunday, I and my wife were vegetating in the house, gossiping, remembering good events, occasions, incidents and memories of   the past. In the evening she was invited by the chairman of a charitable trust, of which she is a member, to assemble at a place where only the people of downtrodden community live. Its name is KACHARVA  TOLA  which literally means a place of  garbage. The purpose was to start a Sunday school in that slum dweller’s place. I too was invited as guest member. By 5.15 PM we reached there, soon the small children along with their mothers assembled under the big banyan tree of that vicinity. My wife started giving vocational training of preparing paper bag to the mothers as poly bags are dangerous from ecological point of view.  Rest three persons including me started the class for small kids of 5-8 years of age. I suggested the head of the team to start with the moral teaching. The children sung the prayer wherein a vow to observe the  five Buddhist precepts (Panch Sila, Non-violence, Truth, Non-stealing, Maintaining celibacy, and Frugality) were incorporated. These will create a strong edifice of moral character in them. I am of the opinion the the morality is the prerequisite of all types education. That is why in Buddhist Yoga places Morality (Sila) is  at the first place, thereafter Meditation (Samadhi) and then the knowledgeor Wisdom(Prajna) emerges. Both (morality and education) must go hand in hand as morality without education is empty and education without morality is a blind disaster. It is unfortunate that in our modern education system students pass Medical, Engineering, Business Management and other courses without any moral training and producing students like Mat Hanh Glac who is a hypocrite and does not believe in the normative way of life. The reason is simple. Plain knowledge is no knowledge but mere information. It gives birth to arrogance and becomes misleading. In fact, mere information is a double edged weapon. For instance the knowledge of atomic fusion can help generate the electricity and lighten a country.  At the same time it can create disaster and kill lakhs of people in one stroke.  The example is Nagasaki and Hiroshima of Japan. Hence, formal information (Knowledge) along with the training of religio- spiritual morality will prove to be a boon as it will generate positive and pious insight in the person and science and technology will be used in a proper way  for the benefit of many and happiness of many (Bahujan hitaya, bahujan sukhaya), as the Buddha has prescribed. We taught the students the  numbers , 1,2,3,-10 and the letters A,B.C.-Z and so on.

For me it was a nice experience. While coming back I heard a verse from the mouth of a monk in a melodious voice which means, “To ignorant idiots’ knowledge leads to disputation, wealth generates arrogance and power tends to torment the weak persons. But for a person of the Buddhist wisdom or a man of pious and positive thinking will enlighten others with his knowledge, if he has wealth he will donate the poor and the needy one, and with his might he will protect the oppressed or the weaker section of the society from the atrocity of tyrants. With this verse my mental agony started melting awy. The cause of Mat Hanh Glac’s allegations on our holy Guru became visible.

Revered Gurujee , modern man is suffering of ignorance based pride and prejudice because of their inauspicious deeds in the past or previous life, as you always remind us. It is true that the law of karma has no exception. One will have to harvest the results (Samskar) of one’s own good or bad karmas or works. This is a scientific law propounded by Buddha in his Second Noble Truth. And no one can escape from it in this universe. (Dhammapada) Only adherence to the Samyak Gyan can help us avoid the future perils of life. So long the accumulated merits born out of the past deeds are there we have to face their result good or evil, willingly or unwillingly. But we can shape our life in the brightest of its colour if we perform our duties or normal day to day work in the light of right understanding or knowledge. But our case is different. Today knowledge is not imparted but information. Knowledge yields humility and wisdom. Information generates ego and arrogance. If one is not trained in morality, information will snatches away faith or devotion (Saddha) from the human heart. That is why one becomes skeptic about the Buddha, Dhamma, Samgha and the Guru. Only mundane logic is his majoring rod of true and false. Blinded with the ignorance regarding the true nature of things he fails to recognize  the logic of infinity. In such a perilous state of mind his evaluation regarding any thing will lead to astray and his future will be dark dismal and disparaging. Only unwavering confidence in the Buddha and the Guru may lead him on the path of happiness and emancipation. We feel piety for him.  May the Buddha and the Guru, shower forth their ambrosia of benediction on Hanh Glac for eradication of his ignorance. At the same time Guru has asked us to be beware of such hypocrites in our fold and maintain silence on them. Buddha has suggested all his followers “Before you speak let your words pass through three gates. Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?” One should not speak unpleasant truth.

We are lucky that our Guru is our guide. He is, in a very nice way imparting us the the Buddha’s precepts and concepts. Mere reading the lessons shared by him can save us from our forth coming problems and evils of the life. It makes the mind pious, pleasant and peaceful. Walking for even one K. M. reciting the Mani mantra keeps one live in the present and does not allow the mind to wander here and there. Remembering for all the sentient beings in every action fills our heart with compassion. And thus secures success, and happiness in life here and here after. I bow before him again and again for his his kind and benevolent eyes on us.

    Holy Guru,

I bow my head before your lotus feet!! Thank you for sharing this article with us. After reading this article I have learned that in the commentary on the “suffering” of the Buddha it states there are 84,000 secular sufferings, which is in total contained within the eight sufferings:

    (1) Not getting what you desire

    (2) Separation from what is pleasant

    (3) Encountering what is unpleasant

    (4) Five appropriated aggregates and the 4 general sufferings of human beings, which include:

    (1) Birth

    (2) Old age

    (3) Sickness

    (4) Death

Another very important lesson I have learned comes from the words of Atisha: “The best instructions are the ones that hit the learner’s hidden faults. The best spiritual friend is one who attacks those faults.”                       It fills my heart with joy to know that our great Guru is full of kindness, compassion and wisdom and is indeed the best spiritual friend who corrects the learner’s hidden faults. We are not as wise as you and by following our own thoughts, we may cause ourselves more suffering. This is why it is important to trust in the Guru. Only by following your guidance may we properly practice Dharma and travel down the path towards enlightenment. By following our own thoughts we are ignoring right view, right understanding, we are not properly practicing Guru devotion and in turn are left to wander in Samsara.

    Mat Hong Quang,

May all your legitimate wishes be granted within the right orbit of Dharma. Your English translation supports the spread the teachings of our Guru. I rejoice in your good deed and with to thank you.

May our Guru and his consort live a long and healthy life for the sake of all sentient beings

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature

May the global pandemic caused by the Corona virus soon end

    Om Mani Padme Hum
