About the Realm of Demons: Lesson 12: PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE (Phòng bệnh hơn chữa bệnh)
Lesson 11 unveiled trickeries in spiritual activities that leave consequences. Although most of the exorcisms were found deceitful but it can’t deny the fact that: there exist people get possessed by demons, places haunted by wicked spirits, and real activities of exorcisms.

Buddhist ariyas cautioned that any one who has yet obtained the path-seeing (darsana-marga), one of five levels on the path a Bodhisattva takes to get liberation, is incapable of doing exorcism.  However, the New Testament of Christianity states that Jesus Christ, his 12 disciples and 70 followers had effectively conducted exorcisms. How can they – the messenger, prophet and son of God – possibly do exorcisms without having attained the level of path-seeing?

How can they – the messenger, prophet and son of God – possibly do exorcisms without having attained the level of path-seeing?

So what is the logical and precise reasoning? Demonic entities that control the host body may be hungry demons; mid-level demons who want to show off their power; or high-level demons who attempt to destroy spiritual progresses of a serious practitioner; or the deva mara who obscures a Buddhist Stream-Enterer (who have entered the stream leading to Nirvana).Often non-Buddhist exorcists do not estimate their ability in casting out demons. If they are lucky enough to meet a low-level demon, they can easily expel it from the occupied person. But if the demon is at mid-level, they will return home helplessly. They may even face risk of death or have lifespan shortened if that demon is at high-level. The aftermath of exorcism is that their children or relatives may be affected heavily.

“Master” Hanh and Ms. Hanh are going into a trance (reported by H.Van – L. Binh – M.Kha  from HCM City Police Newspaper)

The ability of demons depends on their positions and accomplishments, thus exorcists cannot know which levels the opponents are at unless they have divine eyes. As a result, the Buddha and ariyas who have profound knowledge of this phenomena do not permit Buddhist practitioners to carry out exorcism unless they have attained the path-seeing.Some shamans reportedly use wrathful mantras to cast out demons but it fails to work, given the exorcists lacking of virtues and spiritual power, just like weak hands cannot make use of heavy weapon flexibly.

There also have some priests who in the name of God can expel demons from the possessed, thanks to their virtue, spiritual power and particularly their compassion. Nonetheless, such cases are rare because they are not trained systematically on etiquette of exorcism. Presently, according to Phat Diem Bishop’s Palace, there is no etiquette of exorcism in Catholic churches in Vietnam. Ways of praying for God, spraying exorcised oil and reading bibles are less effective if the possessors are demons at high level. That’s the reason why the King of devas once petitioned the Buddha to save his realm from being destructed by Asuras.

A legend told that a shepherd was possessed by a black dragon and became a very eloquent Dharma sermonizer. Local people admiringly offered him many things and built pagoda for his residence. One day, a siddha passed by and attend the shepherd’s sermon. He asked his attendant to burn incenses near the shepherd’s place. The dragon could not bear and left the shepherd’s body immediately. The shepherd wiped his eyes and shouted out in panic:” Why are there so many people? Where is my herd?” (quoted from “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand” by Pabongka). This story shows us the real power of a Buddhist practitioner who needed not set up mandala, form mudras, recite mantra loudly, strike bell or chant sutra to expel the demon.

Great yogi who became Buddha in one life time – Milarepa

Another story told about Milarepa, known as a great yogi who became Buddha in one life time. Once he was sitting in a cave when he saw a rock split open. He thought:”There’s must be a Rock Ogress.”

“Here I am!”, appeared the demon

“Why do you come here?”, asked Milarepa

“You told me to come,” answered the demon

“Go,” Milarepa requested.

The demon disappeared at once. This story indicates that just by one word of a Buddhist siddha, demons of all levels follow and obey.

HH. Dalai Lama in Melbourne

As HH. Dalai Lama 14th settled down in Dharamshala in 1960, local authorities asked him to help expel evil spirits that were raging old prisons formerly established by the British colonials. He began meditating on compassion and just after three days, the ravage of evil stopped.

HH. the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa told a story about exorcism:

“It’s true that wicked demons can occupy and control some persons. I myself have witnessed such cases but not all of occupiers are evil. Sometimes, they may be our friends or acquaintances. I guess they may have something undone or heavily attach to what they have left in life after their death. As a result, they remain in this world trying to attract people’s attention.

I believe only compassion can successfully perform a so-called exorcism. I want to share with you a story about my beloved great grandmother, meaning mother of my grand mother. In her childhood, my mother had been transmitted almost all spiritual practices from my grand mother, Kesang Wangmo. My great grandmother lived in Lhodrak, the place where Milarepa built a nine-storey tower  for the son of Marpa.

She was a Dzogchen practitioner who attained rainbow body. You must have think she was a yogini, a senior lama or so but in fact, she was just an ordinary housewife who busily spent all the time for the family. She diligently recited billions of Amida mantras. She was also a very kind and compassionate person.

At that time, there were a Khenpo who died but his spirit often possessed a nun who was my mother’s friend. This Khenpo was so strong and powerful that each time he possessed the nun, her head became bigger whilst her voice turned into his voice. The Khenpo was arbitrary and everyone was in awe of him. They hurriedly prepared food and a high seat for him whenever he “appeared”. He also gave Dharma sermon via the host body of that nun. My mother had learnt Dharma from him when he was alive and she was the only one he never treated rudely.

Many rinpoches and masters were invited to exorcise him from the nun but they all failed. Adversely, the Khenpo got angry and even spitted in a rinpoche’s face. Everyone seemed to give up. One day, a rinpoche advised my mother to ask her grandmother to talk with the Khenpo’s spirit because she received some important Dharma methods from the Khenpo in the past.

Hence, she was invited to meet the Khenpo. She talked with him in a gentle voice that such a noble Khenpo like him should not make people scared or do harm to them. To everyone’s surprise, he left out. My great grandmother did not hold any pujia nor devotional rituals but talked with him with compassion. And on top of this, she had no fear.

As you all know, the spirit can read other’s mind easily. That Khenpo knew that my great grandmother talked to him with her whole benevolence and without  any selfish motivation. Therefore, he left..”. For your information, the Khenpo in this story could possess the nun when his mind just left the body, after the moment of Ground Luminosity or Clear Light.

Those distinctions help us better understand that practitioners of any religious sects are all involved in exorcism. Depending on types and levels of demons, can they expel them or not. Nonetheless, the best exorcism is to keep yourself from demonic influence. Here are several rules you should remember:

1/ Respect but not get close to demons: do not worship them, ask them for help, admire them, etc

2/ Develop two types of attitudes: do not fear demons and have commiserations over their karmic suffering, as taught by HH. the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa:

“In a way, we can say that if we develop genuine compassion, nothing can harm us. Genuine compassion, genuine Bodhicitta is the unique solution to eliminate the terrors we have been experiencing in this world. Genuine compassion will make you fearless, because you have no concept of ego, when you have no concept of ego and selfish motivation, genuine compassion will become a solid protective shield for us.”

The Guru guides disciples to recite mantra following footsteps

3/ For a long time, I have been teaching members of Song Nguyen Tantra House to avoid demons by these ways:

a/ Generating aspirations of Bodhicitta through 16 daily activities and see it as a mean of enlightenment access (see “What is Tibetan Yoga?”).

b/ Reciting mantra following footsteps, breaths or using malas, which all help boost five functions: convene pure energies; get respects from others; reduce afflictions; increase benefits such as longevity, social achievements and health; conquer and overcome evil forces.

c/ Visualizing Yidam to enhance their power.

Visualizing Yidam to enhance their power

I would quote the advise of HH. the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa to conclude the series about the realm of demons:
“We should better believe in this rather than believing that it’s impossible for us achieve such good things. Just as I said yesterday, we always have strong belief in all negative phenomena but have no confidence in good things. To change our life in a positive way, let’s start with believing that happiness, joy, peace, all the great things will come to us first. We can be fearless if we want to. With this firm understanding and belief, then one day we will be able to attain rainbow body too, like my great grandmother.”

Querido Guru : Muchas Gracias por compartir tan interesantes articulos. Los unicos demonios que existen son nuestros pensamientos negativos. Parafraseando a H.H.

  5. Dear Holy Guru,

I have read this article.  I rejoice with your virtue and compassion to make clear the nature of the exorcism and I remember that if the Buddhist practitioners have not yet obtained the path-seeing,  they cannot do exorcism.  It is the standard to discriminate between the true exorcism and the evil power showed off to harm others or for the personal gain.

In this article,  you also taught us the effective way to keep away from demons and evil force.  Being a true Buddhist,  practicing the dharma diligently and more importantly, continuing the connection with the pure energy of Guru and Yidam are the effective methods to prevent from evil force.

Thank you so much for your precious teaching.

May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

I am delighted with the English version of Mat Hue Phap.  Her good deed of translation supports to spread your teaching all over the world for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May Mat Hue Phap get successfull in work and be at ease on the path to enlightenment.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  6. Tantra Pramitdhita (Josh Hacker) says:

May all sentient beings find freedom from suffering

  7. Mật Tấn Sơn (Đỗ Trường Giang) says:
