Thoughts on my first online Dharma meeting —BLOOMING IN THE LAND OF THE FLOWERING FLAG* ( Kết thúc lần vân tập đầu tiên của Mật gia Mỹ quốc: NỞ HOA TRÊN ĐẤT CỜ HOA)

The first Dharma meeting of Thanh Tri Institute U.S. Sangha just ended a few minutes ago. I’m staying a little longer on my computer to write down this feeling as if a long-time wish of mine had just come true.

Cao Dieu Nhat Nguyen

I have read about the Dharma meetings of our Dharma brothers from every part of Viet Nam. I’ve even attended a few ones during my visits to Saigon. But this is the first time that I meet and share about Dharma with people from the country where I live. I have never seen another Sangha lead by a Vietnamese Buddhist Teacher in the West with 100% non-Vietnamese students who communicate entirely in English. Joining an American Sangha is a new and exciting experience for me.

Since I started learning Buddhism, I have only focus on articles written in Vietnamese and Dharma friends from my birth country. I have never experienced a Dharma in another culture, another language. Regardless of the differences, I believe that the Path of compassion and wisdom is adaptable to different cultures. Many stories of the great Gurus in the past who brought Dharma to a new land has proven so.

The topic today was “active meditation in daily life.” More specifically, we discussed the 4th and 5th Mind Dharma — Lotus Walking Darani and Meditation on Boddcitta in 16 daily activities. Unsurprisingly, Americans also have some similar spiritual questions as people across the globe. A meditator (who didn’t know about the Guru) has shared her experience with meditation. She struggled with staying focus when meditating. And even if she did meditate very well that morning, the moment she entered into reality, she was immediately tangled by the thoughts again. This inefficiency has bothered her so much that meditation has become a chore. She was meditating without much excitement.

The answers to these questions should be familiar to those who follow the Guru. If that meditator reads the articles on chanhtuduy.com, I believe she will find more suitable practising methods. The Buddha and Buddhist teachers have created so many practices to fit with our different traits and circumstances. We don’t have to practice in pain or boredom without any good result. Fortunately, I have found what works for me through the teachings of the Gurus and the Mind Dharma practices He created.

Under Tantra Mahacitta’s guidance, the discussion was fun and open. It gave me the courage to share my thoughts even without any preparation. Some attendees prefer to discuss in the chatbox while listening to the conversation. The majority of the group only listen. There was no religious or spiritual ceremony. Instead, everyone focused on the good practices they have experienced or the solutions to practical, spiritual questions. I’m proud of the uniformity in viewing Buddhism as a science of the mind and not a religion, bringing valuable benefits.

I was delighted to attend this meeting. I pray for the success of the next Dharma meeting, not only in the U.S. but anywhere around the world. I’m grateful that the Guru has created this Shanngha even though He is very far away. I think of the teaching of Guru Rinpoche — “Although your Guru’s merit is as much as layers of cloud, the blessing rain will never fall unless you have a field of devotion.” The Guru’s layers of clouds are flying in every direction, bringing the rain of Dharma to the desert thousands of miles away. And even though each region will have its native flowers, no flower couldn’t benefit from a suitable rain. Outside, the season is turning to autumn, but in my heart, springs have only just begun. Because that is the spring described in the Guru following poem:

Spring comes, Dharma flowers bloom and perfume.
In all directions, Bodhicitta spreads far and wide.
Now that Song Nguyen Tantra House sets its sail,
Across the ocean of Dharma to the land of true eternity.

At that moment, in that holy atmosphere, I felt the Dharma flower has bloomed on the land of the flowering flag.

Dear Holy Guru,
Thank you for allowing me to attend the first Dharma meeting of Thanh Tri Institute U.S. Sangha. It is the fruit of the Guru and many Dharma brothers in many years. Trying to introduce Dharma to my American friends myself without any success, I was amazed that there is a U.S. Sangha with almost 30 members. But today, I see that it’s true.

I pray for the health and longevity of the Guru for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature. May the light of wisdom shine everywhere. May the Covid-19 pandemic will soon be over. May those who die from this pandemic will be reborn in better realms.

I pray for the victims of the Caldor fire and the Ida hurricane. I pray that their sufferings will soon be over. May those who die from these natural disasters will be reborn in better realms.

Om Mani Padme Hum.
Your disciple, Cao Diệu Nhất Nguyên
