What have I been taught by Guru? “An indelicate suggestion” (Thầy dạy tôi những gì? “LỜI ĐỆ NGHỊ KHIẾM NHÔ

The Dharma trip strating from Song Nguyen Tantra House – Phuoc Thanh village – Ba Ria to the North of Vietnam indeed filled me with a lot of memories. It is an opportuniry for me to enjoy the dream-like beautiful scenery, many roads filled with many kinds of flowers and I could see the roads winding like ribbons flapping in the wind with one side being hills and the other being the blue bay.

Enjoy the dream-like beautiful scenery

Not only that, my five senses was also satisfied with beautiful views, great flavors from the dishes at restaurants, unique cafes such as Mau restaurant, Cham restaurant or Doi Dep cafe, RainForest coffee shop … I can see every corner that is decorated sophisticatedly and elaborately in many styles by their owners. But all these things are the external beauty. Though they are as charming as the beauty of the fullmoon, they will become as dark as the 30th night.

Someone may tell that, it is the law of nature and nothing is special. But when we experience it and think over it, contemplate it then we can recognize that being experienced by ourself is far different from what we have learnt or understood about it. Taking my case of speaking in English as an example, I have had the “historical” time of learning English from the regular classes to the courses of elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. However, it is only the outer appearance. When I need to apply my English into certain situation, I cannot remember anything, even a word or a phrase. All of these are of no value. Just like a wind blowing by my ears, knowing and being familiar with it, but the value is not much. When I need to speak a sentence in English, I realize that my English is so bad. It is the feeling of inferiority complex in me that creates the invisible barriers and they stop me to improve myself. I always think that I cannot do it. I am not good enough to do it. In fact, I have lack of confidence, lack of enthusiasm and lack of determination for self – improvement. I find out that I am like a 3 year old child who starts leaning English and step by step apply it flexibly in daily life.

I am like a 3 year old child

At that time, it is necessary for me to nurture the spirit of fighting and having the will to win that Guru has done. Like a series of articles in English “published” on the days from the beginning of the Dharma trip till now. Although Guru was a Russian teacher for a long time, he still meets many difficulties in learning English because English is different from Russian. Guru never accepts losing his own “enemy”, he continuously fights his obstacles. As a result, his English articles are blooming on the site. Guru wrote many meaningful articles in Enlish by himself, he did not need any support of translation from his disciples. It is another valuable lesson for me on this dharma trip to the North.

Guru never accepts losing his own “enemy”

I am sure that I will learn many other lessons from Guru in this trip. I believe that I am able to share some of my precious lessons so as to remind myself of being aware in every action of body, speech and mind when I am with Guru and I can accumulate many valuable lessons to increase “worldly profit.”

Dawn at Da Nang city

When I am now enjoying the space of a Highland café which is the same as other Highland coffee shops in Hoang Van Thu Street, Da Nang city and seeing the city’s residents be busy with their earning on weekdays while I am so relaxing with the scense and lounging with the clouds, I just realize how blessed I am when staying with Guru!

The most impression on me is Guru’s teachings when I am with him. I once told him that writing an article was so difficult for me. When I wrote some sentences, the ideas were scattered about or disappeared. Listening to my sharing, Guru has taught me that we should have positive mind at first. Keeping such positive thought from the beginning to the end is a must. Why does my failure often happen? Because I keep the negative thought of a loser before something happens. Just like before the fight, I think about the bad result. How can I get successful with such negative mind? Guru’s example is a vivid proof. If Guru had had the negative thought, Song Nguyen Tantra House would never achieve the outstanding success as we have known. How could Guru spread his teachings and articles all over the world and get the much respect from gods and human beings as he does at present? Because of his positive mind, a lay practitioner like Guru gets so much respect from others and his articles pervade the fragrance of Buddhist qualities. It is due to the positive mind. We can do extraordinariry things if we cultivate positive thoughts; have good preparation for them and then take action. On any line of defense, although there may be obstacles, but karmic obstacles give us the strength to steer firmly on the boat of perfect wisdom towards the shore of awareness.

The boat of perfect wisdom towards the shore of awareness.

Back to the main points I would like to mention are the lessons Guru has taught me. I am sure that I am still “young and immature” because of life inexperiences and not understanding the ways of the world. Therefore, I thought my actions are not harmful, they will causes us many problems, just like the man who does not recognize the value of the precious vase and he makes the vase broken with his ignorance. It so happened that I and Guru left the hotel for dining out. As an unconscious reflex when I went to the hotel receptionist, I requested them as follows: “Don’t clean Guru’s room. There are many things in his room. You should clean his room if he requires you to do that”. I think my request was common. But when Guru taught me, I just realized that my saying may make us dangerous because of the following factors. Firstly, we came there by car and we brought many things to the room. This factor may draw their attention at the first sight. They may arise some bad thoughts in their mind. Secondly, my saying may confirm that we are so rich and we show off our richness resulting in arousing their greed. Who knows, when seeing us leave the room, they may go to our room and take something. Due to my careless words, I create the opportunity for them to “check” how rich we are. From this case, Guru has taught me that when we are in the crowded places or hotels, we should act as a normal person so as not to be a prey for the bad guys.

Sunset at Da Nang city

Another case was that Guru had a meeting with his disciple. Guru asked another disciple to go the car and get back with 4 balls in a box for the present. That brother took a box back to Guru. At that time, the dharma rain granted by Guru was really meaningful for me. He explained that “I told you to get back 4 balls, why did you bring the whole box to embarrass me? If I met other people today, not my disciple; with your action, they would think that I was so meant. They never know that the rest balls in the box are also the gifts for others?” When listening to his teaching, I realize that we has not practiced in the right orbit of Dharma “we shoud keep in mind Guru’s words and follow his teaching”. Thus we made mistake. Guru thought carefully and made full reparations for everything, but his disciples like us put him in an awkward situation.

In order to make provision for the long trip, Mat Duc prepared a small carton of mangoes thanks to the availability of mangoes in Song Nguyen Tantra House. Everyone has a chance to enjoy the mangoes in Song Nguyen Tantra House; they certainly never forget the unique sweetnesss of such mangoes. The story about the mangoes gave me another valuable lesson. I did not know how “open-mounthed” I was in this case when I checked the catorn of mangoes; I found out that the mangoes were ripened. I thought that with such large number of mangoes, we may not eat them out. When Guru was giving some dharma words to his disciple in his room, my mind raised the “strange” thought of giving mangoes to that dharma brother as a gift and then I went to Guru’s room and told Guru that all mangoes were rippen. Just listening to some words, Guru read my mind and told me to prepare a bag of mangoes for his disciple. After the vajra brother left, I received Guru’s righteous scolding about my careless behavior and the wrong attitude to Guru. He said to me:

“Why do you say like that?  Do you think I do not know about it then you need to teach me? I prepare such mangoes for the ones in need. It is not your business why are you long-handed being involved?”

Listening to his words, I contemplated my actions of body, speech and mind. They were Guru’s mangoes, not mine.  I had no right to make any decisions about Guru’s belongings. In addition, my action was like correcting Guru, and embarrassed Guru. I was like the one who stayed in Guru’s house, arbitrarily opened the refrigerator and took something to visitors. For other people, I may be beaten badly, not only teaching some words as Guru did. Indeed, sometimes the hand and the mouth precede the brain. It is not a way to show the intellifence, it shows the foolness.

However, Guru gave me a big surprise in his social interaction. Guru was invited to have lunch in the house of the government senior official in the judiciary. “My Quang” at the host’s home was so delicious. It was much more delicious than My Quang at Cay Sung famous restaurant in Ba Ria. Guru asked the host to bring some back hotel after saying goodbye. Needless to say, they surprisingly opened their eyes because they never expected the elegant man who was wearing the luxury clothing, driving car to their house, could utter such “an indelicate suggestion”. No need to say, their whole family felf so happy, even happier than celebrating Tet holiday, because Guru’s request proved their “culinary talent” and hospitality. I have attended many parties in many families, but I have never seen anyone who did like Guru. Guru said “their food is so delicious, we should take some home and enjoy. It is the most sincere compliment. Nothing to be afraid of that” My hat’s off to you, Guru!

And just like that, when being close to Guru, I have got many valuable lessons although I am a cause for Guru to get sore throats due to my careless behaviors and being failed to stay awake. Take the case of indelicately requesting to bring the food home for instance. It is the skillful means for Guru to make the bridge of happiness between the host and guests. Guru’s experiences and advice helped me to contemplate my actions of body, speech and mind for the futher progress on the coming days.

I pray that I always stay awake, mindful and attentive in order that Guru will no longer get sore throat because of correcting my careless behaviors and disrespectful attitude towards Guru. I sincerely repent before Guru.

I pray for your good health and longevity for preaching the Dhrama.

I pray for the success of your Dharma trip to the North from the beginning, the middle and the end.

I pray for the end of COVID 19 pandemic.

Om Mani Padme Hum!

    Dear holy Guru,
Thank you for sharing this letter. It makes me see many mistakes I make in my daily life. I must start thinking more before doing it saying anything. The simplist thing can be real bad or real good no matter the intentions. In christianity, there is a common saying. The road to hell is paved in good intentions. This is very true. I hope to continue to learn and though you are not with me in person I hope to learn not to embarrass you or disappoint you. I can not say I will never make mistakes because that would be a lie but I will continue to keep trying to do my best and as your disciples said stay awake in all of my actions speech and thoughts. Thank you kindly for sharing. May you live long and well, teaching the Dharma and blessing many with your words and lessons. May all sentient beings benefit from your knowledge and find enlightenment. Om Mani padme hum
